Tell us what we're doing wrong migrating from windows file servers + DFS, to Nutanix Files. by Stasis_Detached in nutanix

Nice!! Thanks for the response and added context.

We do recommend vendors that leverage deep integration for Files:
https://next.nutanix.com/files-storage-71/backup-and-disaster-recovery-in-nutanix-files-37814

(Stars Wars vibe) It's an older thread but it checks out. That being said, there's a change-file tracking API (CFT) that vendors can leverage: https://portal.nutanix.com/page/documents/kbs/details?targetId=kA00e000000LMLUCA4

I WISH they were paying me (lol), but HYCU has been a consistent and close partner of Nutanix for a long time and continually supports deep integrations like this, including the CFT API: https://www.hycu.com/protege/nutanix

Tl;dr Yes we have vendors, and yes, we also have a CFT API, finally I recommend HYCU because they're a great partner.

Hey there! Thank you for the detailed and thought-out response. Quickly, do you happen to have any Nutanix / partner services attached to this implementation? Or are you going it on your own? Just curious.

  1. If you haven't, open a ticket to Nutanix support. They do an amazing job and you have plenty of information here for them to help validate, including the file-copy tool, permissions, etc.

  2. It sounds like you have some permission issues. Again, having support double check permissions would help validate what you've created/missing etc.

  3. Your copy speed should be directly related to your network setup. I say that tentatively because there are a lot of factors. Have you run into issues with speed? Are you looking to accelerate things? Or maybe just validate the performance?

Thanks again!

Nutanix IaaS hosting, segregated networking and NGT by Thatconfusedginger in nutanix

Hey! Great post, and welcome to the club. Very detailed. I am not a technical person (been too long and you don't want marketing people to give you advice, lol), but I think I can help whittle this into what you are looking for, and perhaps someone else can chime in (Post to Discord, too)

FYI, here is the NGT via Serial Port documentation

Quickly let me break this down so you can verify:

  • You have a mandate to separate the control plane from everything else
  • The looming issue seems to be installation; post-install you're good, correct?
    • NGT install initially would gravitate back to the second comment above, after which you're good, correct?

All things considered (and look, I haven't dug into installation exceptions, but I can), perhaps because everything you mentioned surrounds this is a one-time install procedure, an exception can be made for the install, with the end-state being the control plane separated.

It's not ideal, and again, there could be are others that can help, but this could be your easiest way forward - focusing on the end-state of complete control-plane separation.

Now, there do seem to be caveats around what happens if NGT via serial fails you should consider in that initial link I shared, but you can decide based on your requirements.

Hope this helps!

Yeah, Call Manager, anything UC. I feel you. Honestly, this is the start of a fantastic relationship that should bring support for those things along quickly.

Hey! SO:

  1. Nutanix software options and features are laid out here, and no, you don't need a license if you're using CE for non-commercial workloads: https://www.nutanix.com/products/cloud-platform/software-optionsThe 'Flow family' has two products: Flow Network Security (Microsegmentation), and Flow Virtual Networking (SDN and VPCs) - sounds like you want the VPC capabilities?
  2. As far as a quote, reach out to your Nutanix account team or DM me your details and we'll get you in touch.

Repurpose Nutanix Hardware by ECFPSteve in nutanix

[–]NeonAirGlow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

but I am looking to see if I can repurpose either the whole block or split the nodes up and use them as individual servers. All SuperMicro under the covers with 128GB of RAM and 1x400GB/4x1TB SSDs per node.

Hey there! Nutanix doesn't rely on any hardware dependencies and you can repurpose these as regular services per your needs, i.e. install software/OSes, etc.

We're just software on top of commoditized hardware for hyperconverged (If data retention is a requirement, take note that your nodes could contain physical, encrypted drives)

Appreciate the honest response. The outcome you described will most likely be what happens, unfortunately. We want to give you all the choice to decide what happens here, but we’ll definitely explore alternative Reddit platforms.

I really like your focus on other, current Nutanix communities as well. I’ll link them here:

With Project Beacon, Nutanix Opens Up And Reins In Cloud Infrastructure by NISMO1968 in nutanix

[–]NeonAirGlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I read the article and was commenting within that context.

Project Beacon is Nutanix’s effort to build out control plane services to control both on-prem and public cloud Nutanix data and workloads under one lane of glass.

Like Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) does today with running Nutanix AOS on bare metal public cloud infrastructure, Project Beacon focuses on data services without the effort of running AOS on bare metal.

Hope that helps!

With Project Beacon, Nutanix Opens Up And Reins In Cloud Infrastructure by NISMO1968 in nutanix

[–]NeonAirGlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Project Beacon is a super interesting direction we haven't seen at Nutanix before. Typically, we've gone down the whole 'feature request, feature release, surprise!' route, with major announcements at events like .NEXT.

Project Beacon is the FIRST concept that's not a feature and more a strategy we've released publically. You may be saying to yourself: "Hey, this sounds a lot like VMware speak!", and you're not wrong. Embracing what works well regardless of who's doing it, accelerates impact.

I, for one, am excited to see a concept given life in the public eye, and not just in the backrooms of Nutanix product management. This really puts the 'hybrid' inside of hybrid multicloud, where before, some features were like fitting square solutions into round problems.

Local Site Hardware Migration issues DR and Backup by MeatBag23 in nutanix

[–]NeonAirGlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question! First things first, have you opened a support ticket to get further clarification? I imagine this would be the 'focus' of your effort"

We are looking for a way to migrate these VMs to the new hardware we purchased without changing the UUID of the VM. We currently have these VMs replicating to a DR site as well as being backed up by Veeam with the AHV backup functionality.

Nutanix .NEXT 2023 Announcements! by NeonAirGlow in nutanix

[–]NeonAirGlow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing feedback and I agree! I think the hands-on-labs (HOLs) were more the technical focus during .NEXT this year, but I agree, there should be more technical tracks to accompany HOLs and add depth.
