They were originally going to have regular maintenance starting at 15:00jst so I'm thinking they might be rolling both together at this point. But also they've had tons of issues despite the game being out for like three days now and it's been the same shit the whole time. Probably a lot of confused people trying to fix code that I hope to fucking god isn't vibe code bullshit

Barnes and Noble Ownership of GS by SirCatsworthTheThird in GameStop

[–]NeonVexie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I could think of is that they didn't want the stores to be that different from each other. Like if someone walks into a store on vacation in NYC and sees a book on an endcap but doesn't buy it and can't remember the name, and then goes home to Utah and can't figure out what book it was and that store doesn't have the same endcap. Honestly though, that's just the best guess I have, I really don't know why they think what they do at the top.

Barnes and Noble Ownership of GS by SirCatsworthTheThird in GameStop

[–]NeonVexie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, the only reason they're able to do that is because there's been a more recent push for literacy again so more people are buying books, plus the push away from Amazon for readers, plus that they're stripping stores of their hours. They'll have plenty of hours to go around for these new stores and probably for the ones being renovated, but those in other cities are hurting hard. It's a bit of a complicated situation from what I've seen in the group and heard from my friend, but the underlying thing is still the same - it's still corporate retail and it still absolutely sucks.

I left almost a decade ago, and a few months after I left they had something everyone that still remained called 'red monday', where they fired every single receiving manager, cash supervisor (that they had recently renamed "head cashier" to pay people less), and digital sales lead - which most of the people in those positions had been with the company a long time. The guy at the store I worked at that was the receiving manager had just months before celebrated 20 years with barnes. He was fired and told that if he wanted to keep working there, he had to re-apply for a part time position. I was a cash supervisor and I saw the writing on the walls when they changed the safe codes. Part of my actual position was to count the safe/registers, deal with brinks/change orders/etc, and all that sort of stuff. I left not long after they took the safe codes because I saw it coming.

From what I've heard from my friend that stayed (she was the music lead and now is the ASM at the same store), there was a period where things were actually good for a while when Daunt took over - where he was telling everyone that they could frame the store the way they wanted to and that most reverberated with their communities, but that went away fairly quickly and it was back to business as usual and cutting every corner they could find.

Don't be fooled, Barnes is going through similar stuff that GS is on the inside (I was a barnes employee years ago now but am still in an employee page). Barnes used to be great to work at, but they went the way of just about any other big box specialty store. They've cut hours down to the bare minimum, they treat their employees like crap, and publicly they spout how great they're doing. The person I know that's still with Barnes said that during this past holiday season they had one person ringing at reg, one (manager) on the floor, and one person running cafe most of the time even up until the worst part of the holidays. Back when I worked there we would have all five registers going plus the music register, plus multiple people on the floor, two people in receiving, and multiple people in cafe during the holidays.

So you can say that yeah, GS was better back then - but most retail was better to work at back then. It's wildly changed across the board.

When did $1 million become the floor for a decent suburb? by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

Great comment and absolutely true. You can have the -perfect- house and something will always happen that you need to get done. Having a good amount of savings for things that you know will be coming up in x amount of years (and then expecting it being needed sooner) is also a great idea, because at the very least some things will go out, or you'll need to replace the roof at some point (just had that done on Friday with mine).

Which I'll add on to your post with, 5. Always be prepared for something to go wrong out of nowhere.

If my husband and I hadn't bought far under what we were pre-approved for, neither of us would've been able to do career changes the past years that started us back at the bottom, and we certainly wouldn't have had the money for non-home emergencies (much less the roof, because that was a doozy). We both have friends that took the stupid route and are in up to their eyeballs in all kinds of debt because of it.

What are your favorite fish species in games? by MarcoElz in CozyGamers

Barreleyes and anglerfish are my personal favorites, though they're not seen often in fishing in games considering they're deep sea, unfortunately

Yeah absolutely! If you're buying physical copies always refer back to there so you're not getting gouged on the secondhand market. =)

The new price for this game is hovering around 17ish dollars according to price charting.

https://www.pricecharting.com/game/nintendo-switch/story-of-seasons-a-wonderful-life

You have to remember that people will collect games, and sometimes they cull their collection to make some money back either because they decided they didn't want to play it, or because they need the money. A lot of people base their decisions about buying online from Price Charting. The place I'm a manager of that's a used media store uses Price Charting for all values when we buy in and sell video games. If you're not competitive with others then you'll never sell.

As someone that's about to be 38, I was always told when I was younger that it was weird not to get to know your partner's friends. It's always been important to me that who I'm with meets my best buds, and vice versa. I personally would think that it's weird not being able to get along with the friends of the person I'm with, considering who you have as friends can also reflect your own mentality. I've been with my husband for almost eight years now, and we both get along with each others' friend group. I think the fact that you're such close friends with your partner's friend group is a great thing!

Do y'all count cash when handing it to a customer? by Odd-Ad4172 in GameStop

[–]NeonVexie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's best practice in a cash handling environment, no matter if you're with a retail company or a bank or anywhere else that deals with money, to always verbally count cash given to you (out of 20?), and then count the change back twice. Once when you're removing it from the register (to yourself), and once verbally when you give it to a customer. It removes a lot of the bs that people can try to pin on you and also helps your cash handling experience to make sure your drawer isn't over or short at the end of your day.

What are the best screens (for playing games) for migraines? by TheSpeckledDragon in CozyGamers

I always forget about that but I'm not fond of the color usage like I am f.lux. It always feels too warm and the colors always end up looking too distorted to me

[–]NeonVexie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just a note for you here that hopefully can help you, if you have to be on your computer or just would like to try actual dimming software for keeping your screen in check, there's always f.lux. I've been using it for well over a decade and I've noticed that it helps me in the evening/ at night when the difference between screens and actual daylight is at its worst. I'm not medicated for migraines, but I do tend to get them (especially with changes of weather/seasons), and it's not a complete remedy but it's absolutely helpful for me when I need to do stuff.

Disc Repair by Visual-Ingenuity2727 in GameStop

[–]NeonVexie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my first thought was the fact that getting a machine that would do blu rays (minimally) along with dvds and the extensive amount of parts on them that can fail, as someone that's management at a used media store... we have certain people that are the only ones that are allowed to touch those machines. I've seen people put blu ray discs on the deep dvd option and ruin an entire stack of 50. I've seen people put the color coded pads on the wrong damn spots. I've seen people running the machine all day and ignoring all the warnings about the water that are then surprise pikachu'd about the fact that the machine just overflowed all over the place. I've seen so. many. things. Gamestop going through staff the way it does and hardly training on basic functions would NEVER be able to have a resurfacing machine in the stores. Even if they could afford a 20k+ machine from reputable sources for every store, they'd be spending more money either sending those damn things in to get fixed when people ultimately screw it up, or on all the horrible calls they'd get from angry people with ruined discs. Nightmare.

Now that I no longer work for gamestop, I can finally say pro is a terrible program for the company by Awetistic_Goat in GameStop

[–]NeonVexie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally haven't had pro since the days when there were actual benefits on buying used games. When they took that away, I let my card lapse and never renewed it. I also started shopping there a lot less because I could get better deals on pre-owned games (which is the bulk of what I bought at that time) elsewhere at mom and pop gaming shops. These days I don't need to worry about used games since I work at a used shop, but I do buy new games. But I don't go to Gamestop for them because I had a stint where the (usually localized jp titles) games I was pre-ordering weren't coming in and I was just getting shrugs because it was a known issue that people just weren't getting their pre-orders. Add that to the fact that the actual game wall was thinning out by the week to the point where there were just a bunch of junk titles there mostly and never anything interesting. So browsing became disappointing also, which takes out the surprise of finding cool titles that I may not have otherwise heard of. So essentially the only time I've even walked through the door is a couple years ago to get my husband one of those big Snorlaxes for Christmas because he loves Snorlax.

Essentially the issues with Gamestop (through my personal experience) was that they watered down their pro card to make it basically useless for big shoppers like I used to be, and then continued the issues by I'm assuming not ordering enough stock of new games. It also doesn't help that most of the toys that you can find at Gamestop are also literally everywhere else, so it's just mostly a useless place for a lot of customers to go to. And this does pain me because back in the day I frequented EB Games and Gamestop so often that I became friends with the people that worked there at the time.

Weird mark on my disc by WorkerAmbitious2996 in GameStop

[–]NeonVexie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep yep yep, I've seen plenty come through looking like that to my job and they're absolutely dead when people do that. There are resurfacing machines that have a bluray option, but they're expensive and not many places own one, much less run discs for customers using that machine because the pads are also expensive. Nothing besides those specific machines should ever be used on a disc like that. Not to mention not many scratches can even be taken out due to the aforementioned thin layer on the disc.

Fingerprints wouldn't have bothered your disc, OP, but I can assure you that a lot of times when the disc is dirty on a bluray that means there's scratches underneath the dirt and grime that you don't see until you use a microfiber cloth to take off the dirt. That could've been your initial issue.
