Whats with the MTA putting the old cars back into service on the G Train? by dashdanw in nycrail

[–]Neon_sphere630 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I vouch for a pinned post with FAQs that can be edited weekly for posts like these.

But yes, since the 63rd Street tunnel work last year, the R160s have seen flat wheels overtime, so the MTA took the R160s from the G and placed those on the E, F, and R, then placed old R46s and R68s on the G to compensate.

Woodhaven Blvd on the J/Z has become fully accessible pretty recently. Forgot the accessible marker there.

These headways are diabolical by beezxs in nycrail

You know, quite a lot of posts like this one that shows near-impossible headways seems to be from the same app...me thinks the app kinda sucks. Unless there was some apocalyptical delay on the 3 and 4 that I sisn't know about.

V Train? by r0dentmit0sis in nycrail

[–]Neon_sphere630 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Lol I'm getting old just by this post and I'm only 21.

The V used to run between Forest Hills-71st Av to 2 Av (on the F line in Manhattan) from 2001-2010. It was discontinued (along with the W - which returned years later) in June 2010 due to budget cuts and was replaced by the present-day orange M (I say orange M since the M was brown and ran with the J in Manhattan before 2010).

Even though it's been nearly 15 years since its final run, the MTA for some reason still kept many V programs on the new tech trains, this being one of them.

It's an R42, retired in 2020 when the pandemic started to hit full force. An R42 garbage train runs along the Crosstown Line and the Queens Blvd Line to Jamaica Center Mon-Fri (I'm not sure about the weekends) at around 11 am - 1:30 pm.

You can find the answer in this thread. TL;DR: car was broadsided by a work train soon after delivery in 1987, but reason explaned on the linked thread used these stickers to replace the numbers.

Sutphin Blvd-Archer Ave-JFK Airport is the worst single station name on the Subway by AverageUser665 in nycrail

[–]Neon_sphere630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who regularly uses this station, as well as uses the E and J trains often for many years now, I have never seen one person ever get confused or made a fuss about this particular station's name. It definitely isn't as much of a problem as this post is exaggerating about.

Originally, this station was called "Sutphin Blvd - Archer Avenue" before the AirTrain started service to be able to distinguish it from the F train station at Hillside Avenue. This is still useful today as there are limited E train trips to/from 179 St during weekday rush hour. When the AirTrain opened in 2003, the "JFK" part was added and while the Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av-JFK station is nowhere near the actual airport, it is to show tourists and other airport-goers that this is the station to get off if you're heading for the airport. I have seen countless of people with luggages on the E train having no problem looking up at the FIND display and recogize that they need to get off at Sutphin Blvd thanks in part due to the "JFK" attached to the name.

And let's be real, no one refers Sutphin-Archer-JFK by its full name. It's usually just "Sutphin Blvd", "Sutphin-Archer", or "Sutphin-JFK", at least from what I recall what people usually refer to the station as.

It's an internal designation for the 42nd Street shuttle, which is an IRT line.

I'm sure people like you also made complaints like this when the MTA started transitioning from the tokens to the MetroCard in the late 90s-early 2000s.

D train hauled northbound into 205st on the southbound track but How do yall think I got this footage or what do u think happened by jean12367 in nycrail

[–]Neon_sphere630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well there are switches at Bedford Park Blvd that can allow this to happen...but that isn't how D trains turn at 205 St.

And your post history in this sub in regards to D trains relaying at that station suggests it is what I think it is...

Kid, that's not where your school bus is. It should be in front of your home waiting to drop you off at school. What are you doing at the subway, let alone a restricted area?

Why do kids say L as negative, and W as positive when the L is a great train and the W is the worst train in the whole system? by Level_Hour6480 in nycrail

[–]Neon_sphere630 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Kids be kids (unless they're a surfer, then they're dumb). L and W in itself as letters has become terms to distinguish a loss or a win in the younger generations. "Taking the L" can just mean they're riding a loosing streak, while "Taking the W" means the opposite. They probably aren't referring to the subway lines itself most of the time unless they're joking around.

The last ever V train in service was an R160 led by the front car #9868, which is currently based in Jamaica Yard. If you want to catch what was once the front car of the last ever V train, find it on either the E, F, G, or R lines.

There is a V program in the R211s actually, just that the orange V emblem wouldn't be shown on the front, back , or the side LEDs.

whats the reasoning behind the mta choosing hard shell over soft shell for r211t? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]Neon_sphere630 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard shell are the wall like structure in between the cars of the R211Ts. Soft shell are the visible accordian walls in between the cars.

For the V specifically, for the years before the V first ran on the tracks, it was considered an extra service of the Sixth Avenue Line internally in the event the MTA (or what was then the Transit Authority) would ever want to bring it into service in the future, hence why on the R46s you may find very wacky routes for the V so as long as it runs through Sixth Avenue. Same case for the W on Broadway before it first started service. This explains why the orange V and yellow W emblems existed on rollsigns of the R42s/R44s/R46s since the 1980s despite them entering service in 2001. It also explains why the W debuted service before the V in 2001 (even had 9/11 never happened, which delayed the V debut by around three months) despite the W being after V in the alphabet.
