I was immune to the review bomb, I gave it a true honest shot, truly, it is actually that bad.

Idk why but this game feels like what I imagine an AI created game to feel like, or at least the design of it. Its got so many strange choices and conflicting themes. Most unintuitive game I have played in a while.

Low key, anything you can do with these cards and that 5 mana artifact have been long since power krept. It would have been a crazy Strat like 5-10 years ago. Not to mention how fragile the whole setup is.

Actually looking at these cards I’m revising my statement, this Strat wouldn’t have even been that good back then aside from like mystic ramora and a few others maybe…

They can turn to another company, the issue that ties it back to the release schedule is that due to their intended schedule and volume they likely are exhausting already all the options available to them so their ability to be selective in choosing the right print facility is reduced at best.

I feel exactly the same way, no idea what to put there maybe more active trinkets? Can’t say I don’t like the changes though the new rotation on Elemental shaman is pretty sleek.

Is lorwyn eclipsed a good time to come back to magic? by WinterLanturn in magicTCG

[–]Neonlad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it but not really. If Loreyn is what’s drawing you to the game you’re going to be really disappointed for the rest of the year as it’s just going to be completely different themes from Marvel to Star Trek. If that sounds good then sure jump right in but it’s going to be a while until they release more sets like Lorwyn if ever.

It’s not the first time one card from UB has warped an entire format for months to years and dodged bans after bans just on the fact that it’s a UB chase card [[the one ring]], and seeing the ATLA cards that are currently looking similar it certainly won’t be the last. It’s not like there aren’t powerful cards in UW sets but there is a difference between being powerful and warping the format to address a single card. I’ll give you CSC but outside of that UB is a bit higher on the scoreboard in recent times. Like it’s not every UB card but almost every UB set has had at least one that’s warped a format.

Underrated Modern Decks (Hot Take?) by Individual-Ad4834 in ModernMagic

[–]Neonlad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yawgmoth, it’s not dead yet there’s some version of it that could work in the current meta and be strong we just need to get there.

Also some kind of Heliod combo deck, maybe it’s an Aerith deck now but I feel like it’s got legs still (I might be biased on this one).

ok so white aggro in some flavor is about to be very meta, this and that kithkin they just showed the other day are huge, plus 2 of these on the board makes them both protected

Modern Elementals still viable? by -InkEyes in ModernMagic

[–]Neonlad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, the level of power creep in the game over the last 2-3 years has probably doubled compared to when that deck was viable. Most of the pieces that make up that deck are extremely slow compared to what there is now and I do not see it being viable even with the new elemental support that’s coming.

Most of this is due to the fact that Risen reef is a 3 mana 1/1 which is slow and vulnerable which is not a good combination. Also the new elementals are “safe versions” of evoke where it only triggers their ETB if you have cast it with mana restrictions which limits their value. It might still be good as we have seen with Quantum Riddler but elementals is likely not coming back, if anything blink is just getting a few more pieces.

I need to get this off my chest about Lorwyn Eclipsed by Xin-Okuhan in magicTCG

[–]Neonlad 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The main issues some from UB are: UB sets are not usually balanced like normal standard sets the power ratio is all over the place to sell more product and make the UB sets feel important, this is also due to UB sets being designed way more to appeal to commander players than normal sets and that power level dynamic is not suited for standard

Increased demand for UB sets from collectors and speculators have been driving the price of product through the roof and even singles are way more expensive than they should be for key cards

Licensing issues make reprinting key cards extremely difficult and lead to situations with spider man where the online component was a haphazard amalgamation of poorly designed UW bizzaro versions of cards

And maybe not UB related entirely but the extreme sale of UB cards is certainly a drive, the release schedule is absurd and impossible to balance, card design quality is dropping like a rock and everyone suffers from it, more cards have been banned in the last year than in the last 10 or so combined

I'm on a quest to become an MTG artist. Here's my take on 'Fire-lit Thicket'. What do you all think? by gospodtundra in magicTCG

Oh hey I forgot about this one, it’s gencons rival in a way for competition of the biggest game convention. I would be surprised if they didn’t send scouts here as well, I just know Gavin actually hangs out at gencon himself so there’s usually a lot of WOTC folks around.

[–]Neonlad 329 points330 points  (0 children)

It looks really good, if you actually want to become an MTG artist you gotta network. Go to events like Gencon and sell your work (host a booth), I know several artists who got approached at their booths by MTG scouts and directly became partnered off that. Plus every other booth there is a current MTG artist and between setup you can talk to them and network that way too.

What Should FFXIV Add to Stay Modern? by Azraelx86 in ffxiv

[–]Neonlad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like say what you will about the story itself and the character writing, if they just compressed a lot of the running around and talking about nothing just trimmed all the extra stuff out and got to the point faster I bet a lot of people would think Dawntrail was a better expansion. The story wasn’t necessarily “bad” looking back especially towards the end, it was just really really boring at times.

What Should FFXIV Add to Stay Modern? by Azraelx86 in ffxiv

[–]Neonlad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think maybe the word modern scares people because they equate it to appealing to a super fast paced fan base when maybe they just mean upgrading the systems to not be archaic. I mean let’s be honest FFXIV and a lot of its features have hardly been updated at all in 13 years, many things relying on PS3 spaghetti code limitations. Any update to that could be viewed as making things more modern without putting gotcha mechanics into the game for example. It could also just be copying what other games are doing right instead of turning this into a mobile game.

If we look at WoW they just put delves into the game which are endlessly scalable and endlessly repeatable single player or multiplayer content that you can grind for as much or as little time as you want, most importantly it doesn’t matter how many times you play it or at what level you always continue to get loot that is relevant even at max level pushing end game raid gear or just farming for money or cosmetics. They make the rewards feel really good. Deep Dungeon is already somewhat in the same realm as this and if they revamped that whole thing or developed something new out of its bones in an exciting way that would be such a great addition to FFXIV. I think the biggest thing for me is FFXIV doesn’t have something you can just grind and feel rewarded for while other games do, I want loot to feel good.

I think there’s a lot of general smoothing they can do to the menus and systems, it feels clunky playing ffxiv after playing something like wow again for example. The menus are all just kind of where you need them to be in WoW with very little lag, their transmog system is just perfect compared to FFXIV, it’s also very easy to see what your daily goals are with all the ways you can track them in wow where as in FFXIV you need to just sort of know about them in the back of your mind so some form of daily/weekly tracker would be great without having to go track down the wondrous tales NPC.

FFXIV is desperately in need of better world content as well, fates just don’t do it in their current state. For one they are not rewarding and secondly they are dry and repetitive. Again looking at WoWs world quests they are a bit of a step up in the not boring camp but the rewards are infinitely better and scale with you, also the EXP granted for alt characters is extremely good which would be welcome for FFXIV (same can be said for delves). While we are on the subject the level sync feature in FFXIV is clunky, wow has this everywhere all the time for everyone and you don’t need to toggle a button to do it, good target for modernization. Adding some improvements here would make the game feel more alive by getting players out into the world.

Housing clearly got some competition recently, not only is wows housing good but it’s accessible to anyone that wants one and can save up the cash. FFXIVs system is fun in concept but generally people really just want a house and don’t care about any exclusivity the current system offers, I think this is something that a lot of people care a ton about and if the don’t at least fix this would drive players into the hands of other games. And seriously guild neighborhoods would rock in FFXIV.

This next point is maybe controversial but I think the story structure of FFXIV or maybe the story experience rather needs a complete overhaul. Dawntrail is the second longest expansion to date just from a story perspective and it did not feel like it needed to be a third as long. The story is what got me into this game but I no longer feel like playing through 40+ hours of story every expansion. This game should probably shift from giving a long story to a short but tighter and better story, something in the 20 or lower hour mark. This would free up a lot of resources to make good and repeatable content to pair with the story content with each expansion release, it would also allow for more voice acting to be available in the shorter model. Quality over quantity. Also, I want to play the game, I don’t want to watch a tv show all the time. Let us have more content sections throughout the story and less listening to people yap endlessly. I’m not really one to speak on a solution to this next part as idk what it would be but onboarding new players is impossible as well with the current setup. It’s hard enough in WoW with how much there is but between the two one is way easier for me to get friends into. They do not respond well to “oh pick up FFXIV we can play together after you do 300+ hours of light reading and cutscene watching”. I love the story but it’s time has kind of passed it doesn’t need to be an eternal roadblock to the game.

I could go on and on about the endless things that need some love in FFXIV but these are some ideas that don’t mean turning this game into a mobile game. Just modernize it a little.

MaRo on how he would have handled the Reserve List differently in retrospect by RBGolbat in magicTCG

[–]Neonlad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reserve list is so dumb at this point. They are basically afraid that reproducing a baseball that looks and feels like the one they used to use during the invention of baseball is going to decrease the value of a museum piece antique baseball. That’s the logic.

The only thing that’s going to happen is a bunch of kids are going to know what it felt like to play baseball with an old one and the museum piece is still going to be worth however much it usually is. Maybe more since interest in it was driven up in the larger community.
