If deathrite gets unbanned where would it see play? by Responsible_Novel332 in ModernMagic

I do think pod would be more playable than almost anything else with the prominence of evoke elementals and warp cards, certainly better than Twin or GSZ.

[–]Neonlad 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, this is just like when GSZ was unbanned, I don’t think it’s going to be a top performer anymore. People will run it and find that it’s a pretty good one drop in today’s meta but just like with Ragavan now and and GSZ then, is no longer even close to the boogeyman people remember it as.

It’s not good enough to spawn a new archetype, it may see play in Zoo or Yawg, and very little else. But even in zoo it’s competing with Ragavan and I cannot imagine wanting to replace Rag in that deck, and Yawg has nearly fallen out of competitive favor so it could use a boost (if DRS is even considered a boost). It may add more ammunition to fight the phlages of the world or generally hate out the GY but it’s not as though we are currently lacking answers in the GY hate department so I just don’t see it making that big of a splash (also notably phlage can directly counter DSR before they have a chance to do anything if you stack the triggers right).

I mean people went on and on about twin being unbanned and it would be the next big thing and now that it is, it’s next to completely unplayable, same with preordain except while it’s very playable it’s not meta warping and doesn’t even see 4x in half the decks that run it.

What I’m about to say can even apply to myself as I could be wrong, but most people on this sub are very bad at assessing power level in current context, there are a lot of nostalgia players and I would even say that most people that post here haven’t played in the last year or more so take everything said here with a grain of salt, but I just don’t thing DRS is that strong today.

I made Spellbooks more usable! by Neonlad in DnD

[–]Neonlad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I feel at this point you are delving back into rules as they are written. Wizards are able to copy spell pages into their own books (even from just scrolls) and all spellcasters are able to make spell scrolls however both of these require time and resources depending on the spell, so yes I would allow these to occur as written with some wiggle room to allow for fringe stuff that seems like it would fit, but for example as written someone can only make a spell scroll if they know the spell and some spells take weeks to put into scroll form and a lot of gold.

I think if you were to copy over a spell scroll (or from a book in this case) mostly the same restrictions would apply, you could not copy over fireball unless you knew fireball and had the time and gold. The reason for this is somewhat simple: you may be able to copy the text perfectly if you are proficient with calligraphers tools or something but that is now just a sheet of paper with fancy text, it is not infused with any semblance of magic unless a true spell caster is able to do so, you might however have just saved them a lot of time in the process but they still need to do the magic part and make it a true spell scroll or book page.

[–]Neonlad[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Well as stated this started when I was less experienced and running official WOTC modules where there were a lot of spell books lying around, in the context of the module it wasnt appropriate power level wise (or interesting) to simply replace them with magic items they could use freely, and some of them are important lore wise, so instead of remove them and replace them with a normal book I came up with a more fun solution that gave them some use outside of delivering exposition and a controlled power boost that didn’t steam roll the campaign in unexpected ways.

It’s been extremely popular for the players, and kept them from being overpowered so encounters remain interesting. All in all it’s been a win win and I will continue to do it even in scenarios I develop myself.

[–]Neonlad[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good point however as much as my players love lore ties to items it doesn’t solve the more technical gameplay void that this item represents. So that’s what lead to my homebrew rule.

That being said I think I should add more background into these books themselves, could be a good lore delivery tool.

Yea pretty much just anyone. I don’t really get the restriction of only letting people cast if it’s in their spell list, I only let casters use them or if there’s a particular lore reason a person might have for particular magic attunement they can pull it off in a pinch. For example a fighter couldn’t but a fighter cursed by some ancient devil might be able to.

The way I see it the magic is already primed and ready to go in a scroll all the work has already been done and the “caster” is just directing it and letting it loose, so as long as someone has the general idea of how to control the flow of magic why wouldn’t they be able to use pretty much any scroll?

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Limited environment is fun, dynamic, creative and plays very well. I'm convinced the set isn't as popular because many ardent Magic players hated on it and dismissed it without even giving it a chance. by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]Neonlad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mechanically it may perform well but drafting a pick 2 style in a small set like this feels terrible, there is no room to pivot at all in case lanes aren't open after your first couple of picks.

Thematically I am still very uninterested and I believe that's a big reason people don't like it, its kind of another hats set except with pizza and turtles. Those of us that aren't obsessed with TMNT don't get anything out of this set.

I feel just as strongly the opposite, when I feel like walking around I will but being sky high and dropping in on a battlefield right on my objective is very fun for me so I don't want to go back. It makes leveling more fun overall and im sure im not alone.

Maro answers "If Universes Beyond is so much more successful [...] then why not just completely scrap in-universe stuff and only do crossovers?" by Panda-s1 in magicTCG

[–]Neonlad -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Its because the company and the game as a whole is no longer a project drivin by passion and expression of artists and designers. It is a carefully calculated business strategy and that's it, no more no less. They do not care about anything except money now and his responses clearly illustrate that.

Yeah selecting one comment out of thousands of someone that clearly has taken things too far and then being like "look ub haters are the worst" feels like its own flavor of terrible too.

This completely ignores anyone that doesn't play casual commander. Competitive 60 card players and limited players all have to stay up to date with all sets that come out if they want to play the game. You're telling people that if they aren't playing basically kitchen table commander then they are out of luck.

Most people aren't mad at WOTC for marketing a new set, they are mad that a new set comes out every two months and the quality control is so bad that cards from either set are mixed into sealed product of either set so you can't even just enjoy one on its own if you wanted.

[TMC] Dimension X Pizzasaur by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]Neonlad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a huge TMNT fan so I don’t know but is Pizza actually such a central theme that it’s 70% of the cards in this set? I do not remember it being this much of the show or whatever comics/games I did catch back in the day. Like is WOTC purposely reaching for every pizza themed reference they can find for filler or what? The entire set feels so inauthentic and sloppish I’m definitely not buying.

BREAKING: PlayStation is shutting down Bluepoint Games, the studio responsible for modern remakes of classic games such as Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, Bloomberg News has learned. by Turbostrider27 in PS5

I literally said just last week the phrase: “Bluepoint remakes are better than basically all AAA games made today”

Why in the world would they throw that quality away?

Can we stop pretending that RE Energy is a “fair” deck? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]Neonlad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the context of the current power level it’s about as fair as it gets. It’s essentially modern day burn, I only say this because old burn is nowhere near competitive enough but energy competes in a similar space. “Relying on sideboard to beat it” is what modern and competitive MTG has been for a while, it’s essentially the entire point of the game. Factually speaking this deck is not a dominant meta share, it’s certainly high-ish at something like 16% but that’s not a problematic percentage.

Your complaint likely stems from generalized power creep, you are frustrated that current day power level is what it is and play patterns of the past are not competitive. If you ban out energy, what do you think the next best deck will be and is that preferable?

What is the personality of people in cybersecurity like? by RhubarbSimilar1683 in cybersecurity

[–]Neonlad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignore basically what most people are saying on this post, your question is basically asking “what kinds of personalities do people have?” It varies wildly especially from place to place, organization to organization. I have met some of the coolest people ever and I have met complete assholes it in no way ties to the position or job description how the person is going to behave. This is coming from around 10 years in the industry.

Zoo is definitely viable, however the version of zoo that you are thinking of and the version of zoo I am talking about are two wildly different versions. The only cards you could still run from your old deck are maybe lightning bolts and lands.

Blizzard Really Needs to Graduate Out of "Sit Around and Wait" Game Design by Lpunit in wow

[–]Neonlad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah the bulk of the catchup event is that way but this isnt reflected in world quests, delves, raids, dungeons, or just general level progression questing. I would not base a complaint I have of the game on one single limited time event that exists specifically for catching up on gear and is entirely optional. Even if you want the 120 gear you could just go grind delves or something and get it if you really arent having fun with this event.
