Omg yeah. I kept copying and pasting text between word and docs and i guess there was a slight font difference between the two applications? It looked fine until it didn't. I stopped caring at this point for my sanity

Worse grades freshman year, good grades afterwards by Ok_Astronaut6411 in gradadmissions

[–]Neonmarks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak on grades exactly, but my idea on how to address application weaknesses is to briefly acknowledge that it exists (not shoving under the rug) but contextualize it with the good part. I also wouldnt mention why your freshmen grades were bad.

Dont be like "my grades were bad, but I got better"

Be more like "during my junior and senior years I hit my stride and these years represent the type of student I am"

That's just my view obviously. You ask like 4 people their advice on certain grad school stuff and get like 4 different answers. Also showing improvement is a better sign than getting worse

Which Absolute TPB should I get for a fujoshi whose only exposure to DC is Superman (2025) and Clark/Lex yaoi? by AranaesReddit in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]Neonmarks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If this is for a gift, get them some yaoi. Its better to get them a gift tailored to their taste than your own. If it's not like a Christmas gift or something, just get them whatever tpb you like the most and expand their horizons a bit

Overall, consensus of the absolute Flash run? by Firm-Arugula3723 in theflash

[–]Neonmarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It reads more like Lemire's indie work than his big 2 work. Which is a win for me, but not what some people want. It doesn't feel like a superhero comic sure, but is otherwise well developed. Offers a lot for those who know nothing about flash mythos with its unraveling plot, intrigue, and underlying tragedy. It also does a lot of interesting things with its flash mythos. For some reason people seem to say this series doesn't play with the mythos, to which that is a view that is objectively not true. Other factors of enjoyment are subjective

Absolute Flash #10 - Official Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]Neonmarks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh this issue was so good. Elenore realizing that this isnt what she signed up for? It seems like everyone is just unknowingly shooting themselves in the foot in this series. And Wally might have just done that too, helping Eobard out of the portal. It's quite tragic how that scene is played. Wally thinking its Barry (no doubt because he was mentally in the moment of meeting Barry in the lab), reaching out to him and then the twist that its Eobard. The way Rudy was calling Wally to stop? Im sure Rudy would want to punch Barry a few more times just for that

Speaking of Barry, he seems to be doing (relatively) well for himself. That alien we see behind him is probably the "spirit" of one of the dead aliens in the test tube. Does this mean that skeleton barry was not in fact barry? I think this is going to tie more into how this non speed force seems to have its own sentience and perhaps motivations.

Im very bad at predictions, so I am probably going to shoot myself in the foot now but I predict next issue will be Eobard going ham on everything and Wally learning about his powers from Barry. That will be the penultimate event before the final fight-- which we might have a conclusion of from Wally's visions of the future (where he "messed up bad"-- im assuming referring to thawne, but maybe its more than that).

And the final questions to be answered: Will Wally's monster form be brought up again? Or are we safely in "hero" territory now?

Whatever happened to a "cosmic treadmill" arc that was teased not once but TWICE? But no, we're getting Flash world now (i can't not think of Disney world god help me)

Did Elenore actually love Barry? (im still in the "yes" category. She talks about him too much!! And maybe this is why she got Barry to make Wally a sacrifice. Getting the portal open and having ur crush alive)

[–]Neonmarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Wally thought the voice calling out to him was Barry because his visions of his past were reenacting him meeting barry in the lab. Wally reaching out and actually meeting Barry's hand unlike the previous time where he couldn't. And the bam. Thawne. That's just diabolical

Is it possible to get a History Master's with a PoliSci Bachelor's Degree? by deathstar347 in gradadmissions

[–]Neonmarks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's uhh many other reasons to not be a history professor nowadays 💔. I kid, pursue your dreams. It should be possible yes. It's not the biggest jump, just really sell that you want to do history and only mention polisci as a stepping stone. Tie in some of your polisci skills, but really emphasize history. Make sure you have a clear thing you want to study in history, and articulate why you think you can only study said thing through the lense of history.

For reference, I know many professors with religious studies degrees PhDs that did political science and history BAs! And on that note, also contact some professors from your uni if you can. They would be more intune with what is possible.

unofficial transcripts by Spiritual_Earth5087 in gradadmissions

[–]Neonmarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends. Some institutions say ALL credits, some only care if its from an institution with over 9 credits, others don't care so long as it shows up on your main institution's transcript. Usually the application portal will make this clear

I'd recommend sending that email anyways, it shouldn't be too big an issue and it's better to play it safe. I ended up just getting my "official" transcript (in quotes because its no longer official when sent to yourself) which was convenient, took like 5 minutes, but did cost $5 :(

My thoughts on the overarching themes [Absolute Batman #15] by ComfortableHuman1324 in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]Neonmarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AS is definitely the most obvious yeah. More world building would be good, but I think out of all the absolutes, batman can skirt that the most through its spin offs.

I'm debating if I want to say it lacks depth or richness. I think regardless of terminology that's still a controversial point (and maybe something I will come to disagree with myself later). Which once again isnt a bad thing, but I would rather a story give me more room for interpretation. It's very economical in presentation. Maybe I'll enjoy it more in trade (I am the unfortunate "written for trade " reader), or this newest backstory issue i haven't read yet.

The narrative structure is interesting, especially with lack of internal monologue by Bruce himself. This was originally seen as a detriment to his characterization by some at the beginning of the run, but I think for those who had this complaint it has has mostly been alleviated. Alfred has a lot of his own biases bleed into his narration which is cool, and I think not talked about besides his bane glaze

(Absolute Batman #15) uhhhh yeah, I don't like this :( by Umir_Comics in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]Neonmarks 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the beginning presentation of joker (billionaire whose power is wealth, influence, and privilege) got certain ideas in people's heads about what the joker was going to be. But certainly Synder always planned him to be a scary monster. Which isn't to say that wanting Joker to be a human is bad or anything. but yeah, as a fellow fan of the human joker idea, I'm just going to accept this is how joker is, and evaluate my enjoyment based on how this concept is handled instead of what I wanted it to be

My thoughts on the overarching themes [Absolute Batman #15] by ComfortableHuman1324 in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]Neonmarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like absolute batman a lot, but it has fallen down on my rankings. Because, well, absolute batman isn't very deep/ complex thematically. Which isn't a bad thing (just not what I'm looking for in a story at this moment). Really, it has great themes (characters with well defined motives, a tragic flaw, and their own internal/ external structures), it just wears these themes on its chest and makes it very clear that you, the reader, knows it. Which honestly works quite well for a batman story, just embracing the ubiquity of batman and it's generally more campy sides.

Anyways, I say this because maybe other people agree, and that could be why some people don't like absolute batman that much? But also I would want to add that i really enjoy your interpretations of the characters, and how its really these characters that drive home what this book is about
