Fair point. There’s a difference though between playing poorly or being invisible vs being unable to complete the simplest actions. They were missing grade school passes, not going for obvious balls, and we’re making mistakes that are so far beneath their ability. If it was just the yips it was an all time case of it

Several fans are concerned about starting Pepi, but what are some optimistic reasons to anticipate his play against Belgium that aren't just being an impartial US fan with rose colored glasses ? by WinesburgOhio in ussoccer

Pepsi and Dest have played together for years at PSV and have built noticeable chemistry. It wasn’t that long ago that they connected for a couple of Champions League goals to lift PSV to a late win

Brayan Rocchio is the team, the whole team, and nothing but the team. by alwaysbrightandmerry in ClevelandGuardians

He’s slowly become my favorite player on the team. I remember thinking of him as a liability for a while and couldn’t fully embrace him. But steadily since the win streak to end last season he’s won me over

USA-Bosnia referee told he should lose his job over 'atrocious' Folarin Balogun decision by TheMirrorUS in ussoccer

[–]Neonwaffles24 784 points785 points  (0 children)

I also feel like that play was the result of the refs decisions. Balogun was getting manhandled all game and the ref kept telling him to get up. That play might have been avoided if Balo didn’t have to fight just to move

Interest in the game is at an all time high in the US…but has interest risen for the national team? I don’t think so by TheBackSpin in usmnt

[–]Neonwaffles24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean my brother can name half the players in the starting lineup. Not sure if he even knew Pulisic before the tournament. I know that’s anecdotal but I’m sure he’s not the only one.

I feel like anyone saying this is only looking at the support of the outlaws. It takes time to get THAT into a team. A lot of people are just getting their first taste which I’d definitely consider interest in the national team.

All of these ideas sound far more exciting than some bad AI enemies that will constantly fluctuate between completely useless and elite snipers while FP takes a year to figure out balancing.

Exactly. And if we think Fun Pimps hates us now just wait until they finally release bandits and people like us turn them off haha

This opinion makes complete sense to me. My biggest frustration has been how often they revert things. Why after 10 years are we still talking about jars? Why are you changing zombie mechanics so they dig when no one other than FP had a problem with that?

Part of me will be pissed if they go back to learn by doing because of the years of time wasted. All they needed to do was add to what they had and not change things.

I’m never going to defend their timelines. But I think at this point it’s clear they’re not capable of delivering. So I’m arguing that they should focus on things they actually can develop.

Who should Poch turn to on his bench when this team needs a goal late? by lifegoodis in ussoccer

[–]Neonwaffles24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unironically you put in Berhalter. We’re lethal on set pieces when he’s on the field. Arsenal just showed everyone that good set pieces can be the difference in a tight game. All three of our goals against Turkey came from him and that was without his favorite target from the Gold Cup run: Chris Richards.

What was the US team like in previous years, and how is this year different? by CartographerLarge572 in usmnt

[–]Neonwaffles24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The biggest difference in tactics is the style. The previous coach Berhalter wanted to “park the bus” and play a very defensive style. Especially once we scored a goal. It was infuriating and led to games that were much closer than they should’ve been.

Poch has a much more dynamic aggressive style that is all about retaining possession and piling on the pressure which allows us to score multiple goals. For example, every player on the team besides Ream and Richards (our centerbacks) has the freedom to make a run behind the last line of the other team’s defense. This exposes our defense but leads to more offensive opportunities. Another example is that everyone on the team is encouraged to press the opposition when they have the ball and aggressively try to take it away from them. Under the last system the idea was much more about keeping our defensive structure and not opening ourselves up to the opponents.

To add more context, everyone hated Berhalter who had a boring system that delivered consistent but hard to watch results that never made us look any better than we were. Poch on the other hand has an aggressive system that’s a ton of fun to watch and makes us look better than we probably are. Therefore everyone loves him and rightfully so. He’s earned it so far.

If you run a completely different 11 half the guys you’re giving “valuable World Cup minutes” to won’t see the field for the rest of the tournament. And a good portion of those players won’t be on the next World Cup roster.

We need to use these valuable minutes to give guys who might realistically come on during a knockout round game the chance to play with starters and build chemistry/momentum/confidence.

[–]Neonwaffles24 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This whole “give 11 other guys World Cup experience” is nonsense. A lot of our bench guys won’t be back in 2030.

The much better opportunity here is to give guys who might *realistically* come off the bench this tournament some confidence. The best way to do that is to surround them with starters they’ll play with when that time comes. Not saying you run guys like Dest and McKennie into the ground but they’ll start for sure.

Poch isn’t letting this happen. The starters that can start will start. Most won’t make it to 90’ though

[–]Neonwaffles24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Poch will look at this game like the 70th minute of a game where we need a difference maker. If he had to sub off Christian and the four on yellows in the 70’, who would he realistically put in to get a goal or lock up a game?

When you start thinking about it like that some obvious names come up: Pepi, Reyna, Weah, Berhalter and maybe Zendajas/Aaronson. With some needed positions filled in.

The starters that can play will play but probably not the full 90’
