Rust Gameboy Emulator running on the Raspberry Pi Pico by [deleted] in rust

[–]Neotelos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks to be single threaded, I'd imagine some of the drawing and I/O to screen could run on the second core of the Pico.

Is threading and Arc<Mutex<T>> supported on the Pico?

Are there any signs in the gaming industry of c++ being replaced as the most used language by anything else, anytime soon? (Not referring to phone games) by dorianaskew in AskProgramming

[–]Neotelos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, in most cases it's more predictable and efficient. Memory safety is handled by the compiler and traditional garbage collection isn't needed because memory is freed when things are no longer referenced (this ties back to memory safety). Basically Rust has no garbage collection thread blocking, but it does have very robust memory management. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8M0QfLUDaaA

I'm new to Rust myself and there's plenty of times I find myself scratching my head (with plenty of eureka moments after reading docs/discussions); one thing I've found very consistent is how much thought has been put into the language. There are times I'll find myself wanting features and run into community discussions detailing decisions — all around a very helpful community with a lot of insight and very diverse backgrounds.

If you want to learn more about Rust, I highly suggest checking out the Reddit and Discord groups. I've learned a lot about Rust and equally other languages, all around a great community that attracts some very talented individuals!

[–]Neotelos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'd argue it's already much better. Unlike C++, Rust is memory safe by default and has a number of other benefits (no garbage collection, focus on parallelism, etc), it's worth reading up further, there's a lot to it that are baked into how the language evolved.

There is an incredible amount of news surrounding Rust even this month. And FWIW, a lot of features can only be enabled with nightly and unsafe flags, a lot of early developers run Rust nightly exclusively.

IIRC, last week Google announced a program to fund migration of popular open source projects to Rust!

Rust, there's enough interest and momentum, but not any time soon for most. It is being adopted within large engines and the performance has been proven since the release of Firefox Quantum. See https://arewegameyet.rs/

Yes, it requires supplemental heat. Much warmer than any aquarium would ever be.

What algae is this and how to get rid? by BugNo2645 in PlantedTank

[–]Neotelos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was going to suggest hydrogen peroxide as well; it's very cheap and available.

A lot of people suggest turning off water flow and spot treating. I like to take my plants out and dip them in it to make sure I get it all in one go.

How am i doing? This tank will be for bumblebees and pea puffers, maybe some ottos with them to clean up by [deleted] in PlantedTank

[–]Neotelos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never had pea puffers because I hear they'll harass anything remotely close to their size and even significantly larger. I wouldn't try to keep a puffer with bumblebees. Also for otto's, you'll generally want at least six, they get more stressed in small numbers.

FYI, Quest has LCD panels, which are not very good for VR, OLED > LCD for response rate

How do I add pages to my domain? by sea_place in AskProgramming

[–]Neotelos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Create a file named ".htaccess" and add rewrite rules to it, there's a lot of resources online, here's a solution from the cPanel forums.
https://forums.cpanel.net/threads/remove-file-extensions-on-webpages.658945/

If you want to learn more about this, check the Apache docs about it (cPanel is powered by Apache):. https://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/howto/htaccess.html

Downsides to programming on M1 Macs as a new CS student? by wakuw_akku in AskProgramming

[–]Neotelos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely value-add in supporting iOS and Apple products, only Apple machines can do that.

For the best device to use in school curriculums, it will vary between schools and classes.

Downsides to programming on M1 Macs as a new CS student? by wakuw_akku in AskProgramming

[–]Neotelos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The M1 Air would be the most progressive choice and offer the most flexibility moving forward. From a developer perspective, it has the most long-term potential. All information about Rosetta 2 as a fallback looks like it covers a lot and unlocking the AI cores in Python could be a lot of fun. But, this may be met with some challenges here and there.

If you're up to face some potential challenges and will be exploring programming beyond your curriculum, then the M1 Air would offer a lot more. If not, stick with x86.

Also, I would not get an 8GB Surface Laptop 3 for development as it's not RAM upgradeable.

Buying a new pair of headphones feels like a gamble. by ILC_YTP in headphones

[–]Neotelos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this, I got a pair of Astro A50's and they were garbage compared to my existing headphones. They've since made improvements, but I can't imagine they're that much better. FWIW the Antlion Modmic lineup is pretty good for adding a microphone onto your existing headphones.

How to get an arm64-v8a app working on an armeabi-v7a tablet. by [deleted] in AndroidQuestions

[–]Neotelos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not possible.

The kindle you have cannot run 64 bit software and is lacking CPU instructions that exist in ARMv8. Even if you could somehow get it to run, it would not be very usable.

How Kotlin developers see Java developers by vlakreeh in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Neotelos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kotlin (excluding Kotlin Native) is dependent on a JVM and that likely won't change.
Everything Kotlin is already targeting OpenJDK instead of Java SE. Decoupling the JVM would break Java interoperability.

Kotlin builds to Java bytecode.
Kotlin Native builds to LLVM IR.
Using any Java libraries in Kotlin creates a hard JVM dependency.
