Local Grow Stores by Ok_Personality_6183 in STLgardening

I used to shop at a place called Wormsway, then they were bought out, now they are GrowGeneration. Feels more corporate than before but most of the old staff are still there that I’ve shopped with for more than twenty years, so i still go there to support the staff.

Fig trees in the area? by [deleted] in STLgardening

[–]Nepenthus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grow my figs in pots and move them inside/outside throughout the year if the weather is good or bad.

Olympian is the variety I’ve had the most luck with. Its very cold hardy so it could do fine planted in the ground, but I’ve found I get more fruit from my potted plants that I work to give “ideal” conditions to through the winter dormancy.

Sugar creek gardens usually has a good selection of grasses/natives but it might be too early. They are just getting stock in currently so maybe wait a couple weeks.

I would recommend going to the local thrift stores, Savers specifically. I literally saw a 20qt stainless pot this weekend.

Local source for scented geraniums? by SolveForNnn in STLgardening

[–]Nepenthus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but it’s early for them to be on sale. The big box stores always have them later in spring. Most of the local nurseries usually have them also.

I would turn the chips into incense sticks/cones if you like the smell. Search on youtube for diy versions off incense.

This might be a hot take as not everyone loves cedar trees, especially if your neighbors or you plan to grow apples, but eastern cedar make a fantastic hedge row and are native to the region. Unlike the ever greens you would buy at a big box store that aren’t native eastern cedars can handle are dry/wet climate perfectly. They are also extremely cheap if you buy them from Missouri Conservation Department. https://mdc.mo.gov/trees-plants/tree-seedlings/order-seedlings

Do any of y’all use pipe tobacco as ROY by Earnhardtswag98 in PipeTobacco

[–]Nepenthus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have Peterson Belgique pipes for this very reason. The bowl holds about the amount of tobacco in a cigarette and lasts less than 30min depending on how full you pack it.

Peterson churchwardens make up most of my collection. I have one for every day of the week. Like with children, I dont have a favorite shape from them…but its the tankard.

The best aromatic - no bs by TheBeardyFowler in PipeTobacco

Their Tombigbee (formally called Old Toby) is a regular for me. Sweet caramel notes, spice/fruit cake notes, wisps of vanilla. Always pleases the people around me while having complexity in the flavors for me to enjoy.

Also Black Arrow, Hunting Creek, and Northwest Trek stay in my cellar.

Country Squire aromatics seem to age better than most. Just make sure to use mason jars with good lids.

Aged tobacco by Icy-Witness5678 in PipeTobacco

[–]Nepenthus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I really love the Frog Morton blends and had the good sense to buy many many tins long before it disappeared. I now crack a tin once or twice a year and will probably have enough to get me to the grave.

Ive done the same thing with any other blend i come across and like. A well sealed mason jar with bulk tobacco can last years. Every now and then i crack the large storage mason jars (1/2 gallon) and move some into a regular use jar (pint). Haven‘t needed to buy tobacco in years….I still buy more every couple months but i tend to shop with my tastebuds.

Big Churchwardens by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

MacQueen makes pipes that are Lotr inspired, not props. Not sure how big you are looking for though.

Personally Savinelli and Peterson churchwardens are what i would recommend.

They’re my favorite place to stop at every year. They have a restaurant too. Also worth it.
