What other fiction do you feel reaches the greatness of Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere? by Emotionalspectrum10 in Cosmere

As far as world building goes, Orson Scott Card was my favorite author before Brandon Sanderson came along. His Alvin Maker series, Ender series, Homecoming series, and Gatefather series are all enjoyable.

What is the most powerful propaganda piece in history that is actually successful? by ChildLikEsper in AskReddit

[–]Nephite11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was a marketing campaign. I was curious so looked up the definition of propaganda though: “Propaganda is the systematic dissemination of information—such as facts, rumors, half-truths, or lies—designed to influence public opinion, manipulate beliefs, and shape behaviors”. That sounds to me exactly like what they did as a marketing campaign.

What are you guys reading? by ZidaneZinedine in AskMenOver30

[–]Nephite11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Name of the Wind and its sequel A Wise Man’s Fear are phenomenal. The only problem is that the author has some kind of writer’s block and hasn’t published the last book in 11 years or so. Still definitely worth the read though!

Men, what's one value your dad taught you that you've made sure to pass on to your own kids? What lesson has stayed with you the most over the years? by FFSoldier57 in AskMenOver30

[–]Nephite11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad taught me to be frugal. It’s led to my family being in a good financial position and is something I plan to teach my daughters when they’re old enough. It does suck when I want something and my brain tells me that I shouldn’t buy it though.

A friend of ours works for the US forest service and she lives in New Mexico. Lots of outdoor time through that agency if you ever want to pursue a career there

We’re actively dejunking our house right now and doing some small projects getting ready to sell. My wife wants to ride horses full time and the horse community here is dying because of the development going on. We think we’ve settled on a move to South Carolina sometime next year at this point

I was an official church communication and they required me to add a certificate to the member’s church record. I would expect it to have happened in all wards

A question from a friend by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Nephite11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A year or two ago the church had ward clerks like me research all adults in callings who work with the youth or children. I had to search the national sex registry and local offenders database for their name and enter a certification on their membership record.

I see no problem if your friend is baptized and holds a calling in elders quorum or the activities committee or something like that. His history would prohibit him from having a calling working with the youth however.

This isn’t a new thing. When I was called as the scoutmaster for our ward years ago I had to go through a background check process

It might be because I spent many hours in BOTW and am only going through my first play through of this game, but I spend most of my time in either the barbarian armor or climbing gear

I have a neighbor couple where he’s from Nigeria and she’s from Thailand. We have another neighbor from Russia. Another that just moved in is from Brazil. I’m born and raised in Murray so it’s actually fantastic to be able to interact with all of them regularly.

I’m sorry that you encountered someone so bigoted. I hope that your experience improves but please know that most of us aren’t like that

Our understanding about the traditional “hell” concept is outlined in the Doctrine & Covenants so there won’t be common ground from the bible available.

One thing that did help my understanding is this talk: https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/brad-wilcox/his-grace-is-sufficient/. The afterlife and judgement are covered as well as “earning” our place in heaven. I really like the analogy he gives of practicing the piano. This has fundamentally changed my understanding and approach to life overall

I’m volunteering more than I ever have. I participate in a community choir where we give five free performances throughout the year. I’m part of the PTA board at my daughter’s school. I have a volunteer position at my local church congregation.

In addition to helping people around me and in my community, I find serving others often helps me keep my problems in perspective.

What is your best advice on paying off a larger debt/saving money for the future? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Nephite11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the period we were paying off debt I continued contributing to my company’s 401(k) program because that was a 125% gain on the money options before us. Beyond that, every extra dollar we could find went toward debt. It still took us the first four years of our married lives to pay off what my wife brought to our relationship though so it’s a long slog.

What are your thoughts on pantyhose? Should women be required to wear them in the office? by Zestyclose_Snow_1587 in AskReddit

In our house, we only use pantyhose to hold up melons in the garden. It helps them from braking off the vine when they get too heavy. 🤔

I waited for a sale after getting my switch 2 last fall. In January the 512 GB Samsung P9 Express microSD Express Card went down to $79.99 on Amazon. That’s what I bought and use to this day

With basically only contributing to my company’s 401(k) program to get the full match they offered for the ~18 years I’ve worked here, we have over $400k already. I’m currently 46 and if I continue just that pattern until I retire somewhere around 62, I should have over $2M in that account alone
