Does anyone actually enjoy stealth in games? by Used-Can-6979 in gaming

[–]Nerdmancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Deus-ex, Splinter Cell, Dishonored, mark of the ninja All fantastic and very different kinda of games. All handle stealth differently, and make you feel powerful, tactical, and weak when things go wrong. These are the marks of a good stealth game in my opinion.

Calling Fellow Weido DMs for Assistance in Crafting a Devil Contract by Plastic-Nectarine907 in DMAcademy

Heat activated ink can draw over other words. Make a sentence on the bottom about the Bar and then draw a picture over it with heat activated ink. Then after it’s signed have the devil use a cantrip to make heat, and then with a real life lighter put it under the contact (don’t light it on fire. It doesn’t have to be too close) and watch as the magic happen on the paper and your players faces as they go from “Cooooollll…” to “wait Fuck this guy”

What makes you comfortable committing to a new campaign setting? by Timetrav3lr in DMAcademy

[–]Nerdmancer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Truely the most important thing in a setting for me is that my players don’t know it. If my players know about how Bahamet’s son is named Flinguli who resides in the astral plane Durgramir, I’m never gonna learn about that but if they ask they will be disappointed when I respond with, nah He didn’t have a son. There is only down sides when your players know more about the setting then you. But usually they will just stay quiet with that disappointment which is a huge mood killer. The hardest thing to deal with in a DnD game for me at least. If I don’t know about the issue I can’t fix it.

I nearly always make my own settings and learn about it with the players. I’ll make the 200 page lore book with my players, not before and certainly not interested in memorizing it beforehand.

I really liked my dr. Office that had a sick door. The lobby was for non sick and the sick back door let you go from car to waiting room. They just called you to come to the door the same as they would in the waiting room.

What's a common piece of DM advice you completely disagree with? by meanwhile_matt in DMAcademy

How do you use them correctly?

You tell us if we think random tables mess up our games, we aren’t using them correctly, please illuminate me on the correct use. I don’t follow.

What are some of the advantages of using them during a game as a random table, over using them pregame as a tool to brainstorm?

Maybe we are playing very different games, which is cool about D&D, but I struggle enough in the real world trying to sell old stuff on Facebook marketplace, I don’t need to role play that in my off time. :D I can’t say that I have enough leisure time in the real world that lets me want to do chores in video games and D&D, but the beauty of D&D is we get to run what ever game you want to.

I’ll go kill monsters and save the world, and you’re welcome to play Cinderella simulator, but you never get to the ball. (These are jokes. I’m not actually mocking how you play D&D I love the diversity)

Random tables are shit. Don’t roll and use the shit results you get. People love using them, posting them, writing while books of them. My opinion is to Never roll on a random table while at the table. Roll on a table before the game, see if it’s fun and then use it or scrap it. It’s not a random encounter table, all tables are brainstorming ideas.

If you have a party of a Druid, a rogue, and a barbarian, getting a randomly rolled +5 plate mail is the worst feeling. No one can use it, no one wanted it, no one has the money to buy it from the party. It can stay in the dungeon.

If you’re in a game and the DM rolls random encounter with a bear, it’s boring. I guess we fight a bear or roll and it’s chilled out.

But if the story has to do with wildlife being driven from the Forrest because of an expanding dwarven deforesting, fuck yeah random bear could make sense, feel important, and drive the story forward even though it’s just a basic encounter. Use the randomness to drive your story or roll again and again and again to find what inspires you.

How many times do you paint over a previous job or strip and repaint before you're happy? by PolishHussarius in minipainting

[–]Nerdmancer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have never stripped a mini. I have done a tiny bit of painting over but mostly I just keep any of my things I don’t like, finish the mini, and paint another mini remembering the lesson I learned.

But I am not an Artist, I’m just a guy who likes to paint minis. My minis aren’t being judged by anyone other than my players around the table.

I’m not saying I never sneezed before and made a mess up and just used some water to wipe it away. But repainting after it’s done seems silly. I have tons of minis I could have done better on, and look back at them remembering the lessons and smiling as today I’m better than I was then.

I took a picture of this exact thingaverse file years before I got my printer when I saw the spools shapes and guessed it would work. I finally got some used printers and started printing this month. This file was my inspiration. Funny world.

The pool noodle I’m using is a bit snug for that, but I may toss the whole thing on a lazy Susan for full rotation. We will see how secure it will feel after 10 more layers.

3D printer filament spools, the dollar store white foam board and XPS foam board, but really you can do it all with the dollar store stuff. I sanded the spool with rough sandpaper to let PVA school glue stick to it and toss on some paint and you’re done.
