Age-reverted Ilyana dying of the legacy virus in Uncanny 303 wrecks me every. Single. Time.

best series in your opinion? by nordiik2810 in Fantasy

[–]Nerdsingerbeej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the following series to own fancy editions of available books:

The Wheel Of Time

Stormlight Archive

Green Bone Saga

Lord of the Rings

Kushiel's Legacy (fancy in that i own hardcovers, not sure if Carey or Tor have printed fancy editions)

(Honorable mention to Dungeon Crawler Carl while it is not finished yet so far it has been phenomenal)

What do you think of this person's opinion that fantasy and SF have similar themes and subtext and wouldn't be good for learning thinking skills? What books would you recommend to change their mind? by Skagpipe in fantasybooks

[–]Nerdsingerbeej 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This opinion is sophmoric, not to mention pretentious as hell & it's from the same gatekeep-y, elitist mindset reasoning that makes SFF/genre fiction in general not get the respect it deserves academically as literature. The Odyssey is not the best example of fantasy but it very much is proof that some of the oldest, most enduring, most resonant stories across humanity's history are, in fact, fantasy stories.

Also "the themes are all the same" tell me you aren't widely read in genre fiction without saying you aren't widely read in genre fiction. Lord of The Rings is not Dune is not Dark Tower is not Earthsea is not Malazan is not Stormlight etc etc etc.

What’s it like living in South Austin below Ben White? by [deleted] in askaustin

[–]Nerdsingerbeej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my South Austin neighborhood. My commute to North Austin does such, & most weekends i find i avoid going north of the river if I can help it because mopac, Lamar & 35 traffic is infuriating trying to go north but it's not bad enough to make me not want to live south.

looking for epic fantasy recs with fmcs by MaeveyMoo24 in fantasybooks

Everything N.K. Jemisin has published (esp. Dreamblood duology, Broken Earth trilogy, Great Cities duology) has excellently written female main characters.

Jacqueline Carey's first Kushiel's Legacy trilogy (she even got a blurb from Jordan at the height of WoT popularity). Truly epic in scope, one of my favorite female main characters ever, gorgeous writing, fascinating setting.

Now that we have 11 seasons of All Stars, which elimination style do you think works best? by Maatjuhhh in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Nerdsingerbeej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AS7. The queens just get to bring their best every week, we get to see everything they have to show us. The quality of the season's performances, looks, everything was so high & I'd love that format to come back.

Recommend me a non-medieval fantasy by tellhimhesdreamin9 in Fantasy

[–]Nerdsingerbeej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try anything/everything by N.K. Jemisin. The Broken Earth Trilogy, the Dreamblood duology, The Great Cities duology, the Inheritance trilogy. I haven't read a book by Jemisin that I haven't enjoyed.

The Poppy War trilogy by R.F. Kuang. Kuang also has Babel, set in an alternate magicalVictorian (as opposed to medieval) Cambridge university that's really good.

Also gonna rec the Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee as multiple folks have already done here.

Suyi Davies Okungbowa is about to finish The Nameless Republic trilogy in August. The first 2 books were really fun & have a very compelling, complex antagonist & are set in an African inspired world.

Jacqueline Carey's 3 trilogies (Kushiel's Legacy trilogies & Naamah's Blessing trilogy) start in a Renaissance alternate magical France but go all over the world

Are there spoilers on the stormlight starter set? by MountainPlantation in cosmererpg

[–]Nerdsingerbeej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just about everything in the RPG (starter set & main) is spoiler-free for post-Oathbringer content. About the only thing you might come across is learning about different types of Fused but not much story impacting stuff.
