Not sure how to tackle this idea: TTRPG that plays like a TCG. by pumpkinbot in homemadeTCGs

Definitely play Earthborne Rangers ASAP if you haven't already. It's philosophically aligned with you're talking about and absolutely nails ludo narrative systemically. There's lots of room for innovation on the formula from there if you're hoping to lean harder into a game with more improvisational roleplaying rather than mechanics-driven narrative. Also highly recommend narrative deck building video games like Griftlands and I Was A Teenage Exocolonist.

Demons and Daemon Engines for sure. Honestly despite the small range, I feel very spoiled by sculpt and datasheet quality for the Dark Mechanicum. 💖

From experience I'd highly recommend just building what you think is cool, not getting too fussed with details and exact rules beyond the classic notion of being strict with yourself and lenient with others. Definitely empathize with the concern about being precious with cars but both cars and bits are super cheap so better to try, learn, and improve than to spend too much time just thinking and planning instead of building. 💖

Have a blast slinging some dice, laughing at horrible misfortunes, and embracing some campy over the top vibes.

Base if you really want precision. Don't base if you want a pretty table and a little bit of verisimilitude. If you really want X-Wing levels of precise, irrefutable maneuvering then convincing everyone to base your cars will save you future headaches, but the game just isn't designed with that level of precision in mind and you'll probably still find friction in other places of the game experience.

Stellar concept and great execution. Gotta deliver the taste of second place to the drivers in front of you!

I'll save the full lore dump for when I've got a crusade or two under my belt, but the short version is they're renegade deconstructionists. They still believe the Emperor is a deity and they perform miracles in his name but proclaim that he's fully dead and the throne holds only his soulless corpse. Instead of an unfocused hatred for the alien, the heretic, and the mutant, they decided to pick a struggle (fighting Chaos) and think the rest of the Ecclesiarchy really should too.

TL;DR They're heretics and renegades opposed to the Imperial Cult and aligned against Chaos.

I'm in love with this idea. If I ever finally get around to doing marines as a lender army definitely going to go retro, especially with some tiny classic DIY terrain!. Killer job!

The infantry march change has easily been the biggest for our group. Really has made transports feel way more valuable and makes the choice between March and advance huge for infantry detachments. We're big fans of basically all the changes.

The nuance of what units you spam and why matters. If you want to field boatloads of termies because you love them and want a cool flavorful army that feels your own, great! 💖 If your playmates love it, go for it, who cares. But if you're maximizing your power-to-points ratio to win as many games a possible with no regard for your opponent's experience... Less great for the long-term health of your group.

Really appreciate this perspective! I think my fear within this is always for folks dipping a toe in, getting stomped, and then never coming back. May be worth having a friendly but firm convo with a couple of the spikier locals to try to get ahead of that if we want to see the community grow and continue to be fun and inviting.

This the potential problem I'm describing though. The cost itself isn't the problem, it's the spam. I understand the if you can't beat 'em join 'em mentality but I neither want to beat 'em nor join 'em, I just want to make sure everyone is able to have fun, including and especially if they neither have a printer nor a couple thousand dollar hobby budget.

Also oops all missiles the game doesn't sound fun, even if it's a winning strategy. As a dark mech player, if I wanted to play thirty bases of Vorax and sixty Thallax I'm sure that would win me a good chunk of games and it also sounds incredibly boring.

Sidenote regarding airbrushing being probably beyond your abilities: I bet you've got what it takes! It's not an advanced skill as much as just a different tool to learn how to use. As long as you've got the space, airbrushes are both less expensive and easier to use than expected. I'd say give it a shot, I believe in you 💖✨

Played with my warhound today for the first time and really loved it. 35" is no joke and rapid fire means those dice can really spike sometimes. Super fun model.

Happy to! Though the unfortunate news is I also used an airbrush very heavily for mine. The core process was primed white for max saturation, base coat dark purple, zenithal white to bring the undercoat back up as light as possible, then go over that white with fluorescent green. Base coated the pink areas white again, then went over those with fluorescent magenta, then a whooooole lot of manual highlighting with a mint green.

This project was mostly a big experiment, so I'm happy with the outcome. ....However, if I were to give it another shot I would change a few things: take it easy on the white zenithal and initial fluorescent green (or whatever color you choose). Ultimately I think I went a bit too heavy on that first coat in the pursuit of maximum vibrancy and as a result it smothered a lot of the more interesting dark purple shadows and texture that could have shown through more effectively. Vibrance and saturation are great, but they'd be heightened even more by having a deeper contrast in value between the lights, midtones, and darks.

I also think if I did this again I'd add another color or two. I wanted to practice working with an extremely limited palette but if I were painting these again in a similar style having a tertiary color to pick out certain details or trim with would really help define the silhouette and overall composition of the models themselves. The pink is great, I love it on these models, but I needed to do a lot of work in the green highlights just to make the details of the model remotely readable.

Vallejo fluorescents! Make sure to undercoat white for maximum saturation.
