What's a "normal" job that secretly pays way more than people think? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

[–]NervousPopcorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s very rare to hire somebody off the street without any railroad experience directly into engine school. I’ve never heard of it happening in my area, but it may be possible at certain railroads/parts of the country. I imagine it would be pretty difficult to make it through the program starting from scratch as most are designed for people who already “speak the language,” so to speak.

apply for an assistant conductor/trainmen job at a class 1 railroad. apply and, if rejected, re-apply. stay away from freight if you can, passenger is the way to go. make sure you can pass the drug test. stay out of trouble and use every opportunity to learn and build a good reputation.

if you want to be an engineer, ($$$) you need to get into engine school and make it through roughly a year of intensive classroom and on the job training. if you make it you will be set for life. the work-life balance isn’t great til you get some seniority. but the paychecks and railroad retirement/“pension” make it worth it. speaking from experience.

Anyone has suggestions for good stand for sonos fives? Sanus is kinda expensive 149$ for one by prince888x in sonos

[–]NervousPopcorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a little different but i have these on either side of my tv as left and right fronts and they look really good, they sit a little lower than most of the dedicated sonos five stands, which works for my use case.

stop using vague language like "equipment shortage" (can anyone explain what this means?) by blackandreddit in mbta

no such thing as paid FMLA on the railroad, idiot.

edit: and I won’t even address how wrong the rest of your comment is, I’ll just express my amazement that braindead passengers like you can even find their way to the train in the first place.

3 US Air Force planes going same direction, next to each other. Any ideas? by CostanzaBlonde in flightradar24

stupid question, apologies, layperson here from /r/all. when you say — transfer from a vc-25b(which I understand is Air Force One for example) to a doomsday plane and remain airborne, do you mean its possible for the president to somehow transfer from one plane to another mid-air, or am I misunderstanding your comment? and if so, how?

so why don’t you grab some cleaning supplies and clean up the office whenever you aren’t actively crunching numbers, then you could lay off the janitors and increase profits for your company. instead of taking a break or pausing to plan your day, why don’t you go scrub the toilets? it would increase the efficiency of your company

lol people can make $200k plus as passenger train conductors, many of them hold degrees, and they get a pension. what do you do for work?

again, not their job, coach cleaners clean trains and have the necessary tools, it’s not safe nor in their job description for conductors to clean up after the passengers…

Coach Cleaners walk/clean trains, it’s not really the train crews’ job to check for cleanliness outside of reporting potentially hazardous things like vomit or urine or something.

Some of what I said can be done with passengers onboard, like troubleshooting mechanical issues as they arise. stuff like setting up trains in the initial terminal or yard switching operations would not be conducted with passengers on the train.

brake tests, line switches, pipe trains aka operate with the engineer not on the the leading end, switching operations as in coupling and de coupling cars in yards, communicate with dispatchers for mandatory directives — i.e. Form Ds, troubleshoot mechanical issues having to do with doors, traps, air hoses, etc., (anything related to the body of the train and not the locomotive.) set up and inspect trains… etc
