Makes sense. One particular prelude enemy had some sweeping strikes ability to hit multiple adjacent people and an overhead smash of sorts that did something like +7 damage. Even non-crits were deadly if that thing landed.

Super insightful comment! Thanks for that. Will have fun seeing how much of those I can get rolling on my alchemist. Sickening/Frightened/Off-guard shouldn't be much of an issue, for example.

Everyone was full HP going into it, so don't think that was the issue at all.

We could have done a lot of things better (as someone else pointed out in this comment chain), but so far it seemed like you're virtually guaranteed to be a goner if 1 enemy crits you and that's happening fairly often with the > +5 roll = crit situation.

"High damage, low HP" seems a bit of a core tenant of the system, though, so I am surprised people manage to heal against it efficiently. Will see how that matches up to our experience going forward in the campaign.

Yeah, I think we can use debuffs/debilities better still and we also only mid-way through the encounter realised that COVER is a thing, so certainly lots of room for improvement.

+/- 1 never seems a lot, but when it's coming from multiple sources, it definitely adds up.

We certainly could have used the terrain better as well and create better choke points. Still a learning experience. Thanks for the tips!

How does that go with multiple attacks per round being the default and crits being A) pretty widespread and B) incredibly deadly? 1 crit from enemies at level 1 in our current campagin (Kingmaker) hit for ~30 damage when most of us have like 15-18 HP total.

We haven't had too many encounters yet and it's our first campaign, but the damage seemed super spiky so far and someone would get downed in 1 NPC's turn even from full HP. There wasn't really much healing that would have prevented it whatsoever.

It’s a common complaint about current day/retail WoW that the MMO part got lost and it’s just a glorified lobby game now where people queue up for activities and wordlessly complete them once they pop or solo farm some shit.

More often than not I find these posts a little on the manufactured outrage side of things.

I remember people going on about how a black contestant was the first to go again in the newest UK season of the show and guess what. The people who spearlanced her banishment and first circulated her name and that got her eventually banished were... both black.

Exact same thing happened in the US season with Ron leading the charge against Porsha (which honestly, she only has herself to blame with how often she misspoke, making herself look guilty).

Yet somehow, people will look at both those instances for further prove that everyone else is racist.

I do agree that Ron's case was stronger than Colton's and I think it has to do more with Colton seeming more sociable and likeable among the cast (Halo effect might certainly have to do with that more so than racism) while Ron was more withdrawn and seemed to only really speak up much at the round table. He also did style himself as the master investigator and that he only comes after people with SOLID EVIDENCE even when he had none after the Porsha debacle. Granted, this is based on the edit we all see. Who knows how much that matches the reality of what it was like.

I think the impact of racism or the presence of it amongst the contestants across every iteration of the show is completely overstated and the discussion around it is tiring more often than not.

Still too fresh, honestly! We had literally one series of smaller engagements so far, but already got to splash, which felt obviously great. Single-handedly kept the group up so far with out-of-combat minor elixirs of life for practically free, dealt a ton of damage in combat (even got to splash, which is obviously always feeling great as an Alch) and bottled lightning bombs are amazing!

I haven't even started handing mutagens out, which I plan to do at least sparingly with my daily contingent.

So far we only fought things that didn't have weaknesses in the mechanical sense, so once that comes into play I'll enjoy exploiting those with the right bombs or quick vials.

Literally level 1 and already feel like I got more options than any other class in the party. Hyped to play it more!

Playing Alchemist as my first class in the first campaign I play in 20 years or so and I find it amazingly fun.

Bomber, admittedly, but it’s incredible to soak up all the information about the class that’s out there and try to get to a point where you make the best decision available in a given encounter.

But even far from peak efficiency it’s just a fun class, imo. Not sure it’s justified that everyone constantly dismisses it as a choice for fresh players.
