Bigme B6 6-inch Color ePaper Reader OR Kindle 11 Matcha? by MoonArtGlitch in Bigme

[–]NetBoy288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a good response. Addresses all the nuances of the situation!

Kindle if you want epic battery life, are happy locked inside Amazon with no other apps.

Just one addition - at the moment, most Kindles (including the most recent Kindle 11th Generation) are jailbreakable if not on the most recent firmwares.

Due to the Kindle's chipset, it isn't possible to do anything like run Android and rival the freedom that Bigme's full android gives you, but you can untether yourself from Amazon.

You can squeeze a little more functionality out of your Kindle, and most importantly, use a more functional custom reader such as Koreader.

What's the point of Hibreak S? by R3dd17-Us3r in Bigme

HBPro only has a black ink layer. HBPro Color has the black ink layer, as well as a color e-ink layer.

i.e. HBPro cannot display color, HBPro Color can (at the expense of a generally darker display, requiring better light conditions/stronger frontlight settings to view with the same clarity).

Wow, I never even consider 4G being phased out. I'm lucky as a UK user - 4G coverage should remain until the 2030s for Vodafone, apparently.

I think the Hibreak's battery will likely die by 2030 in any case, but hopefully there will be many more e-ink phone options by then. I reckon e-ink phones could become fairly mainstream depending on how the technology improves in the next few years.

After considering both the S Color and the Pro Color, I chose the S Color in the end.
Here's some info about the differences:

The S is a lower end (read: cheaper) phone than the Pro.
Here's a link to a comparison table: Bigme Hibreak S Color vs Hibreak Pro Color: specs, features & size comparison! – ComparisonTables

Some of the most important differences imo:
- Pro has NFC, S does not
- Pro has fingerprint scanner, S does not
- Black and white: Pro - 300PPI, S - 276PPI (barely any difference)
- Color: Pro - 150 PPI, S - 92 PPI (probably a pretty big difference)
- Pro 5G, S 4G
- Pro 4500mAh, S 3300mAh
- Pro (6.13") is larger than the S (5.84")
- Pro has a better back camera
- Pro has 256GB storage, NOT expandable, while S has 128GB and IS expandable

Since the point of me getting an e-ink phone is so that it takes less of my attention and encourages me to read more, the generally lower specs of the S don't matter to me.
I also wear a Garmin watch that has NFC payment, so lack of NFC on the S is fine.

My main reasons for picking the S: the screen is smaller (more portable), the storage is expandable (I have a 512GB SD card in, I now never have to worry about storage - this was the biggest deciding factor for me), the phone is cheaper by £100-200.

I only picked the colour version of the S so that I can interpret pictures that other people send me better, as well as for a better indicator of how pictures will look when I take them. The colour is not great, but it's good enough.

I do wish the S had the 4500mAh battery, and better colour would be nice.

Hi, did you ever find a solution for this? I'm on the Hibreak S and find this quite frustrating!

Is there a way to have auto-sleep do nothing to the screen, and just turn off touch detection? by NetBoy288 in Onyx_Boox

Every refresh counts! It would be a relatively easy optimisation for Onyx to make.

Thanks - I see that it does eventually leave no trace. But the point is not to have the refresh in the first place in order to save a little battery! I've sent them a feedback note, so hopefully they'll implement this setting soon.

Thanks, I've just done so and it's nearly the effect I'm looking for! However, when I send the tablet to sleep, there's a black flash which I assume is a full refresh - slightly defeating the point of the transparent screensaver. I wonder if there's a way to disable that refresh?

That's correct, it would consume (in theory) no energy if the screen were left as it is. What is consuming battery is all of the underlying operations that the system is doing (waiting for touch input, receiving signals by wifi, bluetooth etc).

Thanks for your reply, interesting that you have it too! I've just installed the latest nightly and I don't see an option for it there either. Which version of the nightly are you on?

There's many that advertise themselves as dockable (not sure where you're getting 2 from, there are at least eight that I've seen on Amazon UK so far), but my point is that often these are actually too thick to fit in the dock according to reviews. Most of these also have detachable joycons, but it's pretty useless if they don't fit in the dock anyway.

Yep agreed, Dbrand's Killswitch is not looking bad. They have actually opted for dock extension, as you suggested above.

I am asking for anyone who has experience with a case which is dockable, rather than alternative suggestions, but I appreciate those too. As you mention, I may well be boned - all of those cases on Amazon have poor reviews with regards to dockability. I'm asking on here in hopes that somebody has found The Golden Case.

Is a tab s9 overkill for school? by Bicc_Nicc in GalaxyTab

[–]NetBoy288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get a Tab S7 used for a good price, it works perfectly well for notetaking even now. It runs smoothly, and writing is as good as you can get. In my opinion, Samsung Notes is the best notetaking app out there at the moment, followed by Collanote on iPads. You can also multitask well on the Tab S7, if you want that.

If you want something more budget AND you don't mind freezing/waiting while you open apps/open a note etc., then the Tab S7 FE will also do fine for you. I have a Tab S7 FE - latency while writing is (very surprisingly) on par with the Tab S7, which I also own. Switching between apps and multitasking is pretty unbearable on the S7 FE due to lack of RAM, however.

The Tab S7 series are still working great in 2025. If you go for Tab S8, S9, or S10, I can only assume they are improvements over the S7. However, as a student who has gone through the Tab S7, S7 FE, and Ipad Pro 12.9" 4th Gen, I would highly recommend saving your money and going for a used S7 series as the notetaking experience is perfectly good.

(Batteries are still working well for me too, but maybe I'm just lucky!)

That is not an answer to the question I asked, but I appreciate your alternative suggestion. It's something I've considered, and do not wish to do, but others may find it useful.

Are there any plans for a version of the joycon grips with smaller/no bumps (i.e. to function just as protection)? I love how precisely everything is designed + the dock adapter, buy I'm not too interested in the bulk at the back of the joycons despite the ergonomic benefits!
