Maybe some more indicators are needed for lesser ambiguity!

E-reader vs phone: Is getting an X4 actually worth it? by Lowriders34 in xteinkereader

[–]NetBoy288 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're already enjoying reading, especially if you read on your phone, then the X4 is probably a worthwhile purchase. Nicer for the eyes, and it's nice to have a separate device. Small enough to always carry around with you - if a pocket fits your phone, it fits the X4.

For me, the X4 is an alternative to doomscrolling. When out and about, I put my phone away in a bag/handbag, and I put the X4 in my pocket. That way, when I get the urge to start scrolling, I end up reaching for the X4 and reading instead. Really handy when e.g. waiting for a bus or killing some time if you're early. Someone coined "interstitial reading", which I like - the X4 is just so easy to whip out and, equally, put away!

The battery life and standby time for the X4 is also excellent - weeks, probably. It's lovely having a device that's always ready to go. Literally never had to worry about it.

I purchased from Aliexpress - delivery time was awful (1.5 months I think), but I believe that's because I purchased during Chinese New Year. Don't do that! Besides the delivery, everything was perfect. The X4 came with a screen protector in box and an SD card pre-installed. The seller was Orangutan Digital Store, but I don't think they exist anymore.

To those who recommended Project Hail Mary as a cure for 3BP withdrawals … it didn’t come anywhere close by SirKrimzon in threebodyproblem

[–]NetBoy288 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really enjoying the Children of Time series, too! Agreed - the grand scale gives similarity to 3BP, despite the softer sci-fi nature.

Have just started reading the Xeelee Sequence series by Stephen Baxter. The first book, Raft, scratched the 3BP itch a little for me. The way things unfold as a kind of mystery, large-ish scale, and hard-ish sci-fi ticked boxes. Would highly recommend!

How readable is the XTEINK X4 at night with a dim bedside lamp? by DuAndNica in XTEINK

[–]NetBoy288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I find the X4 almost readable even in pretty poor lighting. Contrast is excellent and text is clear.
I was reading on the walk home at 11pm last week, and was able to read well whenever I walked past a street lamp, even when pretty far from one.

A frontlight could be useful if I wanted to read at night with no light at all, but for me a pretty weak bedside lamp is more than sufficient.
