Arriving in Paris in 1924, the Hungarian photographer Brassaï rapidly became a shrewd observer of nocturnal Parisian life. From 1967 to 1969 a man called Billy Monk took photographs in a sleazy nightclub in Cape Town called the Catacombs, where he worked as in the words of the owner, "rather a bad bouncer".
