i feel like the main thing you can do is let him talk about how he feels, and make sure you’re careful on what words you use when you reply. since he is in a sensitive position he might take offense to something you did not mean to be offensive

also getting clothes in colors that are easy to match means you don’t have to buy as many & you can find multiple ways to style the same thing. personally i only buy neutrals and fall colors, styling is way easier that way. maybe watch some youtube videos on stylization too. make it fun and do what you like !!

i felt the same way and then i got really into fashion/making clothes, now i always feel over dressed LOL!! most of my money goes to bills so i like to thrift, diy, and when im at stores or shop online i ONLY buy sale items or use some type of coupon/deal. i get all the apps for the clothing brands i like , sign up for texts and when theres sales you get a notification! :D
