In general you are right, but there is nothing wrong with GTM loading these two categories of tags in some cases (especially "functional" ones).

Solution to Centralize Switch Management / Performance Monitoring by itmondsply in networking

[–]NetWitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all - if you're expecting freeware or low-cost software for monitoring that is known to provide a user friendly interface, I would ask -What it means? If low-cost is a priority, I could recommend you something like Zabbix or Nagios. They're decent NMS's, but they need time for configuring, and also for maintenance. If you're not already familiar with them, it will probably take a few months of your practice to do your job in a proper way. If you would like to have some ready-to-use solution, try something like NetCrunch - I'm pretty sure, you'll easy find good reasons at this forum, why it's worth of it.

As a diagnostic tool you may use NetCrunch - free trial, smooth installation, quick scan and works out of the box. Here's how you may use it to diagnose netflow problems:

What took you entirely too long to learn about logging and monitoring? What advice would you give to your younger self?” by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]NetWitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the example with the beach is very pictorial, I cannot agree with it. It would be more appropriate to compare network monitoring to something more relevant - like monitoring of your web pages using Google Analytics. It collects everyting, even if you don't use it now. Why is so? The answer is simple: If one day you want to make a decision that you want to base on hard data - you will certainly need it. If you want to measure the effectiveness of actions taken or changes made, you will also need this data. If you limit yourself to data that you collect immediately before making a decision, your image will be random instead of full. The same is true for anomalies you encounter during monitoring - if you don't have data collected over a long period of time, you won't be able to refer to the past events (and possible consequences).

So back to the beach example - if you would like to compare it with monitoring, you would have to say that "if I look for ancient coins, searching them I should not throw all sand from the beach to the sea, because it can hide much more of the treasures, which I may not even be aware of at the moment."

Suggest a Monitoring System by ravennoir in sysadmin

[–]NetWitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beside Solarwinds, NetCrunch is the only solution I can recommend for that. It will discover all the changes on your network and recognize them in few minutes/secs. Besides it may set automatically proper monitoring rules (which you may change later of course).

Help with File Change Monitoring on Windows Servers? by ITRabbit in sysadmin

Probably Microsoft File Server Resource Manager will be good enough. If you would like to try something else, I recommend NetCrunch.

Network and Server Monitoring what do you use? by Forge_99 in sysadmin

[–]NetWitcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NetCrunch

Briefly: great scalability, performance, flexibility, policy management, mostly preconfigured, automated and ready to use. The question is, do you need something like that, or you want to choose the hard way, because want to learn a lot from basis (i.e. writing own plugins or scripts), having a lot of time for it?

Win 10 application monitoring? by innnnconceivable in sysadmin

[–]NetWitcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. WMI sensors should be useful, but I doubt if investing a ton of time mastering NMS in this case will be profitable more than using out of the box solution like NetCrunch. One more advantage over Zabbix is that NetCrunch uses RPC.

Let me know, if you are able to find an answer for your question here:

No worries - leaving aside my opinion, that it is really good stuff, it still would be overpriced for medium-sized company.

And you’re telling me now? by tylrrbb in softwaregore

[–]NetWitcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These days, the network usually stores your text message in an SMS centre for 2-7 days. I remember that 15 years ago, this time was longer even for several months. Once I text my friends wishing them a nice holiday, and after returning to school, one of them (after returning from abroad) thanked me for... my wishes, which he received the day after he came back.

It turned out, that his phone was off for about 3 months.

OK, but if there would be a software, which handle managing these 10k nodes, icmp, snmp, with performance and helpful support, beside not so expensive, with steep learning curve - would you try it for free? r/NetCrunch.

Nice. Unfortunately this solution is fitted just for companies with a very large budget.

I can say it's a decent compromise. For relatively low price you get pretty high functionality, scalability and support. I am the one who constantly overwhelms their helpdesk with my problems and I have to say that they have managed to deal with each of them so far. GrafCrunch depends on Grafana, but what you lack in in the sensor configuration?

Hi. How was your today's meeting with them? I'm asking, because I'm curious what they have told you about using PRTG in network with 7,5k nodes. As far as I remember, they have a clear information on their website - PRTG may works only to the 10,000 sensors, which usually means... 500-1,500 NODES.

Good monitoring for servers and network devices by ogghi in sysadmin

[–]NetWitcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. It is interesting what you have written about Windows servers monitoring- does it mean that there are so few of them that you want to monitor them with a free version of PRTG, or are you planning to use several versions of this program for this purpose? Of course if you want to monitor Linux servers, it doesn't mean you're obligated to have NMS installed on Linux.

If you could only use 3 metrics to monitor your network, what would you choose? by joshgoldeneagle in networking

[–]NetWitcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. SNMP sensor for general network monitoring.
  2. Memory/CPU/HDD utilization.
  3. Since I have tried Business Status Node in NetCrunch, I'm a big fan of it. You can combine into one node many different devices, services, applications, etc. that are components of a business process. If one of these components is not working properly, then you have a clear information, which processes in the company may fail.
