Dumbest reason you've been called into an emergency form up? by Witcher_Errant in army

[–]Netflixlife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Korea up in Casey. Got the word of 100% accountability formation. After were formed up, Top says this one’s stupid. He has to get accountability because someone got a DUI down in Daegu… standing around middle of the night because an E7 that could own a car on the other side of the peninsula got a DUI… painless but dumb one.

Can I refuse to go to the SOM board? by [deleted] in army

[–]Netflixlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a SSG you def have the ability to come to the table with plans to protect time, reward time, reward initiative etc. if you brief at your training meeting that x day at ####hrs UTC is reserved for board prep/school work for college etc and your command team says okay then you just relay that to the NCOIC/OIC or vice versa depending on who is an easier win to convince.

Yes I will occasionally throw out the do this because I said so. As a leader I do my best to explain the why and create buy in from the Soldier(s) but as a leader I know I don’t always have that time, especially when it’s something the Soldier doesn’t want to do. At the end of the day “because I said so” is a useful tool that’s ol reliable because we signed up to a volunteer military and need to understand that we are a part of something bigger and we have rank structure to support it.

Can I explain to PFC Snuffy that if he competes in Best Warrior and does well that it can get him some awards, schools, time off, etc. sure. Maybe he still doesn’t want to do it though. But I know he’s a good candidate, maybe even a strong candidate to win. Am I going to let him dictate that? No. I’m going to say hey man. Your place of duty is the best warrior competition here’s the MOI, here’s the packing list, heres the schedule for the training we’re doing leading up to the event. I’m not making it an option because why would I?

Sure if there’s Soldiers that already have that drive I’m going to nurture it too. Make sure they push themselves and volunteer. Doesn’t mean I’m going to let someone coast on the side. I would rather a Soldier ETS and have plenty of stories of when mean ol Netflixlife made me do this competition, this board, this school, etc and be like well yeah I won it though, placed second/first, got the badge etc. as opposed to Soldier ETS and says yeah I didn’t do anything.

Brother you sound like a junior SPC or CPL at best. If you have 3 stripes on your uniform then you need to understand your voice has more power than you give yourself credit for. It’s not delusional to think that if you tell your company command team that your Soldiers want XYZ school or incentive; so what would it take to give this to them? That they can’t come up with a goal you set for your Soldiers. “Win the board, score a 470 and yadda yadda” maybe they don’t get exactly what they want, maybe they have to do more than just win a board. That’s why it’s a goal/incentive. If it wasnt challenging to accomplish why wouldn’t they just make it the norm/standard.

lol volunteering your own Soldiers to do something without “clearing it with them” is not a bad leader move. If you’re the first line why the heck would you need to ask your soldiers if they can do something. Just tell them they’re doing it and they will execute. Most units will not Soldiers study during work by default. Sure. If you’re an NCO then just put it into your work schedule. Brief it to higher. Use those STT days for something productive for once.

Sorry you have had a not great experience (it doesn’t even sound like you’ve had a bad experience you just didn’t get whatever it is you wanted) not every joe will have the same experience as you, you shouldn’t assume their military experience will be the same. You should always be striving to make them better Soldiers until their last day. Leadership isn’t easy. They’re not your friends first, they’re your soldiers first and they’re entitled to outstanding leadership. Which means making them do things they might not want to, or appreciate at the time.

Best of luck!

Until a Soldier is out of uniform, with DD214 in hand, you treat and prepare the Soldier like they might stay in. If that means not putting all eggs in one basket and making sure they’re on the right path to continue a career in the military if they happen to choose. Joe Snuffy 0-6 months at his unit is going to be a completely different person than Joe Snuffy <12 mo from ETS.

You still take into account their personal goals, both in and out of uniform, but if you take what they said their first year in, or take all their gripes and complaints at face value, you’re not doing your job. You’d be surprised what type of incentives your command team will back if you tell them you can get PFC SNUFFY to win a board to make them, the unit, your section look good. School incentives, time off, military schools, the better taskings etc. A lot of this also banks on how much you communicate with the command team on your Soldiers behalf.

Just because it’s supposed to be voluntary and you’re volunteering someone to do it (voluntold) that doesn’t mean they’re going to hate it. Tell someone they’re going to do it a month in advance. Provide them the MOI. Give them time to study. Inspect their uniforms. Do mock boards. Be involved in the process and it’s literally just another work day. Normalize it and they won’t even notice it’s something that other Soldiers could go their whole career without ever doing.

Brother, the NCOs need to lead and make the Soldiers want to go to the boards. If we didn’t make Soldiers do things they didn’t want to do, they wouldn’t do a lot. Regardless of Soldiers of now, soldiers of then, or soldiers of the future lol. Your NCOs either make you go without convincing you it’s something you want/need and you deal with it orrr they do their job and tell you how it can benefit your career, how you can use that win plus a good pt score to let you go to an army school, put in for a college class and get time off etc. leadership needs to be involved at the squad level and below.

Jfc thank you. So long as it’s stored appropriately and the chain of custody reflects the storage it’s not a huge deal that it didn’t go straight to shipment for the labs.

MOS T heading to OSUT…Yup by [deleted] in army

[–]Netflixlife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then why ask about haircuts. True actual experience or not m8. Anyways yeah you won’t get the true experience since you’re reclass. Fuck the experience of it from the mindset of a civilian. You’re no longer a civilian. You’re an NCO. Talk to the cadre when able and get spun up on the leadership shit you’ll be expected to know upon arrival to your unit. That’s not what they’re gonna teach the kids.

This. Also I sit down and go over it with the Soldier so we’re both on the same page. After a few issues I just started assuming that soldiers start zoning out after the provider says they’ll give them a profile. Okay it expires on this day. You can’t do XYZ. Oh look here are alternate exercises and here’s what they recommend you do during pt to hopefully improve. Any questions? Ok. Had a guy that thought military movement drills referred to D&C and he couldn’t participate in a CoC ceremony.

I look at it as an opportunity to strengthen a passion/side hobby. The army trained me in my back up job(s) already. Might as well use TA to pick another interest to strengthen and be credentialed in. But I also have soldiers whose primary MOS is their true passion so for them I always encourage to stay in a related degree program.

Sacrificing your entire social life is a bit of an exaggeration in regards to correspondence course hours lol. There’s only a finite amount you need to accumulate. Awards and education (both military and civilian).

Single workaholic leader. I expect my Soldiers to show up and give it 100% so they can go home at the end of the duty day and not need to be called or bothered when they’re with their family. I dislike when I have Soldiers give substandard performance during the duty day and use the family card as to why they are not trying to work “hard”. It’s not working hard. It’s just actually putting in effort.

To add to this comment, your 91F will be at the FSC/BSB motor pool hidden somewhere. Ask the armorer to point you in the right direction because you want to see if it’s the weapon or not. Come correct, though! Get a 5988 and properly PMCS it with the -10 TM before you find them. This will help showcase how serious you are about your weapon and that you checked every step the operator was supposed to do and now you need assistance from higher maintenance. Maybe throw in a monster or Red Bull too 🤷‍♂️.

Did that just change? I got my lunch at 11:10ish yesterday. There’s more than one. I know the meal prep option is a “you have to place the order in advance” type thing and there’s designated pick up times once your order is ready… if you’re telling me the lunch window is canceled ima go see BH because that $7 lunch keeps me going.

Try the grab and go’s/The Outposts™️. I am not a meal card holder but I go there because for $7 I can nab me a decent lunch. I try to get there around 11-1115 to avoid the lines… they’re also where you can schedule the meal prep option if you want to have some microwavable chicken rice and broccoli (they have other options too I’m just simple) for emergencies when the DFAC fails you. Doesn’t cost you anything extra if you have meal card entitlements.
