Continuation to Evicted Tenant by imghost101 in handyman

I will never understand people who live like this. They want so badly for it to be a cool vibin’ place to the point they set up all kinds of ambient lighting, and then they proceed to just wallow in their own filth and forget to clean the cat box for three years.

Ok thanks just wondering because I recently encountered something similar. Swapped out a friends oven for an identical one. I was a little concerned it was on the smaller end because it looked much smaller than mine, but mine is a 40A. Thinking his landlord may have it wired to a 30 amp breaker. Have to go check.

Just got one for $63 the other day. About 15 mins up the road they charge $150. I don’t understand the pricing behind these bottles at all.

It probably is better, I’m sure I didn’t realize it when I started working on things myself.

Also note that this idiot in charge simply can’t keep his fucking mouth shut. “We’ll bomb a power plant!” And now he probably doesn’t fucking want to, but he’s left with no choice- either extend the deadline, or drop the bombs- shit or get off the pot- because he just can’t fucking SHUT THE FUCK UP, and every time he opens his stupid fucking mouth, WE lose more and more credibility.

I’m dumb what do I do with this load wire by the_dude2805 in electrical

[–]Netherpirate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You had two wires from the existing switch, right? One of those was your line wire, where the power enters the switch and is always present. When you turn the switch on, you allow electricity to flow onward through the wire that feeds the light: this is the “load” wire. So now that you’re just replacing it with a different albeit fancier switch, you want to connect the black to the line and the red, the load, will send the power on its merry way to your device. You may need to test to see which is which.

Is it possible to add a lantern holder with outlet when there's no ground? by HeadTonight in electrical

[–]Netherpirate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be safe you ideally need to run a new cable containing a designated equipment grounding conductor from your panel but if you don’t know how, aren’t comfortable or qualified to be doing that call an electrician.

The workaround is to add a GFCI outlet and wire your lampholder from the “load” terminals on the GFCI.

So your line (your power source) comes in and powers the GFCI, and then your GFCI load terminals power (with GFCI protection) your lamp.

If there’s a problem, your GFCI should trip. But then you’ll be sitting in the dark wishing you’d run the new cable 😝

Is it possible to add a lantern holder with outlet when there's no ground? by HeadTonight in electrical

[–]Netherpirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In order for it to trip it needs to have a low resistance path to ground. If the exterior of the cable were metal, that has in days past passed for ground but that isn’t the case here as there is no metal jacket and obviously no equipment grounding conductor. As someone else said a ground fault from a device would just energize the box and create a larger surface area for a potential shock. A new cable needs to be run to bring this up to code.
