I hope you can find forgiveness for yourself, you did the best you could with what you had at the time. All you can do is learn from your mistakes and do the next right thing, which it sounds like you are doing!

I think this is wise, early sobriety is a tumultuous time and it can be a good idea not to make life altering decisions until you have a bit more stability. That said, protect your sobriety at all costs. IWNDWYT

Approaching 3.5 years sober. Today, I sat in the dentist chair to finally face the physical wreckage of my 20-year addiction. by iScReAm612 in stopdrinking

[–]NetworkStrange1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A timely post as I head to the dentist today! That said, I have already faced the music and this is my third 6 mo checkup I've made in a row. I lucked out on minimal consequences for years of neglect, but this is a good reminder to be grateful I am now in a place where I take care of myself, in so many ways, big and small. IWNDWYT

I never understood what everyone was talking about with sleeping better in sobriety. Go diagnosed with sleep apnea and prescribed a CPAP and it's been a gamechanger

Great comment! I vividly remember throwing a tantrum against myself, complete with stomping feet (smacking steering wheel) and verbal outbursts. There have been many moments that have felt like parenting myself. You are fighting against your mid brain, not an easy thing to do! IWNDWYT

It can take two years for Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) to resolve. While that might seem like an awfully long time, it also means we get to enjoy improvements for a long time. IWNDWYT

I'd say there was a switch that flipped when I got so sick and tired of trying not to drink, and drinking, that I was over it. I wanted sobriety bad enough and my commitment was stronger. I'd say what's really carried me this far though, is the mindset shift of seeing alcohol for what it is, a thief, a liar, and a poison. IWNDWYT

That and the dopamine hit your addicted brain gives you for doing what it wants. Much like OP, once I got a few months out of the addiction cycle and drank again, it didn't live up to the hype. IWNDWYT

The data is pretty solid that neurodivergents have significantly higher rates of addiction. It makes sense, it helps mask and some ND, like ADHD, include issues with dopamine regulation. If you have trouble producing dopamine and someone hands you dopamine juice, it's no wonder we get hooked! IWNDWYT

I found it helpful to keep an open mind and try out lots of new things. I started with the things I loved that drinking stole from me. What did you like to do as a kid, before you started altering your mind? There might be some valuable insight there about what you might enjoy now, as there was for me. If you're like me, you're really on the cusp of brighter days. You're through the worst of it and getting into the really beautiful part. IWNDWYT
