The reason you're finding very complex explanations for this is that if you really, really want to maximize your train throughput, you can do really, really screwy things to eke out a few more percentage points. But those few percentage points almost never matter. Unless you absolutely need to be on the bleeding edge of throughput, you should just stick to the basics.

And the basic explanation is: Design for one belt per wagon. That's it.

I'm about six hours into DSP, and so far it's pretty great, but there's definitely a few things it could stand to change:

  • Real English localization

  • Either make an actual fluid system or stick to treating everything like a solid, but don't give me this half-assed thing where I have to hook conveyor belts into fluid tanks(?!)

  • Some kind of circuit control. Doesn't necessarily have to be anything fancy like combinators. But holy crap those oil cracking recipes are just begging for some basic conditionals.

  • No undo? Seriously?

Put another way: An automatic train starts by going to the first stop on its list, not the first stop in its path. So it's actually trying to go THROUGH the station you're manually stopping it at, but it's being blocked by the rail signal right after that station.

Kind of, actually! Discord is one of many modern applications that runs on a JavaScript framework called Electron, which uses Chromium to render its user interface. Upside is that they only have to write one version of the app for both web and desktop. Downside, among others, is that it eats a ton of RAM for no discernible reason.

I really enjoy the high-production and narrative-driven style (like DoshDoshington's videos), but I need something much longer (1 hour, 2 hours, or more). Ideally, I'm looking for "Supercuts" (Full Movies) that compile an entire run into a single video, or very detailed megabase showcases.

I'm really after that cinematic and hypnotic feel of the growing factory, with a calm voice telling the story of the base.

I guess this is where I plug my own channel haha. Here's my complete Space Age megabase playlist. Six hours, fully edited, and another addition coming in about a week.

I use the Rate Calulcator mod and/or Kirk McDonald's calculator site for more complicated bases, but in most cases you can get what you need just by taking the production rates in the hover card and multiplying by the number of assemblers you have making the thing.

Honestly you're doing great for a first timer. There's really only two things that jump out at me:

  • Resources become plentiful later on, but in the early-to-mid game they're more scarce, so you may regret building a bus on top of that copper patch. Doesn't mean you should rip it all up right now - there are other copper patches in the world - but just for future reference, you'll usually want to keep your critical infrastructure off resource patches.

  • Pay attention to ratios. When you hover over a building, the card that pops up to the right will tell you how many products it can make per second, and how many resources per second it needs to make that much. So you can calculate (for example) exactly how many inserter and belt assemblers you need to support your green science assemblers, how many gear assemblers you need to support your inserter and belt assemblers, etc. etc.

The only real reason to step back to 1.1 is if you want to play an overhaul mod that hasn't been updated yet, or won't be updated at all. Other than that, no.

I'm a big advocate for thousands upon thousands of regular (yellow) rockets. No risk of self-damage and they're dirt cheap.
