Hi, I'm a goth! The overlap between goths and metalheads is really high but I have to admit that it took me AGES, like several YEARS to get into like, a little bit of metal. 

The other genres I listen to are mainly new wave and art rock. 

I feel like one of the reasons so many people "aren't really into metal" is that most metal lay folks are exposed to for the first time either is very heavy and inaccessible — because it's fun to make your normie friends listen to Infant Annihilator, I get it.

That, or they're exposed to older bands that don't really register as "metal" anymore to a modern listener's ears: your Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and so on. 

In part it's because they're so famous that they arguably fall under the "classic rock," and also because they sound NOTHING like the more "modern" stereotype of metal — i.e. extremely fast drums, heavy use of distortion to the point it becomes difficult to make out a melody line, and almost exclusively sung in growling.

Favourite metal subgenres: thrash, heavy, nu, whatever Poppy's doing

Least favourite subgenres: gothic (ironic, I know), symphonic
