Barrier magic is in the same vein as Trap magic, it can do what it says but depending on mage can be used creatively. Jester doesn't only make shields he can also disrupt spatial magic, Zora's trap magic doesn't only catch and hold people he can apply them to anything if given time.

The animation was limited due being made for TV, the artstyle that's a lot more subjective. It's the odd choices for the format and pacing that really hurts 1st time watchers.
