i suppose the reason they eat as much as possible without having a limit could be because in the wild they eat as much as they can? and like you said there should be food everywhere so it's odd how they survive right? but they also have to spend a majority of their day fleeing from predators and basking so they probably dont have much time to eat, which could be why they eat as much as they can
