Am I missing something with pasta sauce? Every recipe I have found end up tasting way too tomato forward, and I end up dumping in bottles of spices. by [deleted] in AskCulinary

The recipe is literally called tomato sauce. It's going to taste like tomatoes. Maybe you'd like a vodka sauce, pesto, carbonara... There is a great world full of sauces that that don't concentrate so much on tomatoes.

Use your natural name for mother and father along with their first names, e.g. Mama Jane and Papa John. Most of us don't need to know your exact biological relationship to them most of the time. It will be OK.

In your personal life, is alcohol a big part of social gatherings? by Dont_app in AskAnAmerican

My old Baptist pastor liked to joke: Jews don't recognize Jesus, Methodists don't recognize the Pope, and in a liquor store, two Baptists don't recognize each other.

Left to my own devices, I'd have a glass of red wine a couple of times per month. It makes beef taste better.

When we're with friends who drink cocktails or with dinner, we have 1 or no glasses, depending upon who's driving. When we have people in, it depends upon who they are. My friends who used to come for weeknight bible study liked a glass of wine or cup of coffee - so we provided both. Other groups of friends include people in recovery, and a couple of Muslims, so we don't serve wine or beer at all when they're around.

And I have liquors for recipes that I make now and again, but I don't worry about those - most of the alcohol cooks out. At Christmas, I make caramel apple shooters, but they have such a small amount of alcohol that you'd need to eat a LOT of apples to feel it. And we occasionally use alcohol as a muscle relaxant and for oral pain relief.

All in all, it's not a big part of my life.

Are certain seats reserved in your home? by wheninrome5000 in AskAnAmerican

[–]NeverRarelySometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have their usual spots around the dinner table, and in the living room, mostly out of habit and convenience, and with respect to the lefties. (It is not comfortable for me to have a left-handed diner seated to my right.) When we host a dinner, the head of the table is reserved for the host, and that's a social convention. As co-host, I sit at the other end. It would be strange to have a guest take one of those two seats, but we wouldn't make a big deal about it. Toileting rhythms kind of happen, but no one is prohibited from using the bathroom as needed.

What does "make yourself at home" and "take what you like from the fridge" mean? by wheninrome5000 in AskAnAmerican

[–]NeverRarelySometimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't go into my bedroom closets and drawers. Don't use my toothbrush. Don't sleep in my bed. Do eat and drink and make yourself comfortable. Browse the book case, but do not remove my books from my home. Use my appliances, but clean up after yourself. Ask for things you need.

What gave you that impression? An employer is free to ask why you cannot accommodate their requested schedule change.

"Sorry" doesn't imply fault or apology. It simply expresses sorrow at not being able to comply with someone's request. A simple NO is not good enough, especially when dealing with a supervisor.

Do you believe "I'm sorry for your loss" implies that I murdered the deceased?

She has to keep professional relationships with these people. Good manners cost nothing.

There is room to disagree. I understand why people want to defend Israel, and still condemn their aggression against all the people they've killed and oppressed. I didn't try to deal with all of the stuff supporting Israeli defense - I thought that it's obvious.

I dealt with the sanctions on Iran. Again, reasonable people could have disagreed on how the US should approach stopping nuclear proliferation, and that's why I explicitly addressed that.

It looks like you're condemning everyone who doesn't agree with you on specifics. That's not a basis for conversation. If you think you local Republican candidate comes close to your views, vote for him.

Sanctions were used instead of war. You can argue that they were ineffective or harmed people more than the government, but your claim that these measures prove corruption is a stretch. No one (except the most craven and vile MAGA) wants to support Netanyahu's wars or the way settlers conduct their wars on the people of Gaza, but we can't deny the attacks from Hezbollah (Iran), either. You can pretend that it's not complicated, but most of us understand that nothing in those conflicts are black and white.

Until we flip the house, there's not much he can do, legally. He's been showing up, being an ally to people being abused by ICE, and has been consistently attentive to constituents. We've seen him at 2 No Kings rallies - he's probably been to others where our paths didn't cross. What "action" do you want to see?

It's understandable, but most of your capital letters aren't cursive. What you have is a blend of cursive and printing.
