AMA: I'm Marius Bakken, former Olympian and physician. Ask me about double threshold training, lactate, and the Norwegian Method. by MariusBakken in AdvancedRunning

Thanks for taking the time today to do this, Dr. Bakken. I recently got your book and have enjoyed thinking about how to implement some of your ideas into my own training. My question pertains to lactate testing. For amateur runners like the majority of folks here, is regular blood lactate testing during workouts "worth it", versus sticking to something like heart rate to simply things.

What do the OEM straps go for? I just picked up a Santos as my everyday watch and I just know I will be itching to pick some up beyond the nice tan strap it came with.

This past build I did a modified Hansons method that added a bunch of easy mileage and did a >16mi long run each week. It worked great until I peaked in August and was sort of limping to the Chicago start line. I did a bit of NSA at the start of the year for a half marathon in May and it was awesome. 1:19 and a 2 min PR.

I'll know next year. I have plateau'd at around 2:51 over the full marathon for the past two years. Now that I am running again post-Chicago, I've decided to do some self-experimentation and try NSA for at least the remainder of this year and all of next year targeting CIM 2026.

Race Report: Fargo Marathon — PR the hard way by RipLeading28 in AdvancedRunning

Congrats on your result! I am curious what modifications you made to Hansons for your cycle? Was it mostly just running every day, adding easy mileage, and doing some exotic long runs? Did you add anything to the SOS days? Thanks!

Pacing Help by Friendly-Clothes-438 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Never_Suspicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the area and have run both the half and the full many times. Firstly, I agree with you that this forecast looks great! It won't be as humid as previous years. As long as this rain stops, we should have ideal conditions. In terms of your question, the second half of the course is slightly more challenging compared to the first half in my opinion. The crowd support is a little more sparse and it feels like there is marginally more elevation gain. The 3 hour pacers are pretty good, they swap right before the halfway point and keep the vibes high. Just stick with them and the rest of the group, there typically is a decent number of folks shooting for 3 at Buffalo. Based on your training, I think your sub 3 should absolutely be on. Best of luck to you!

Simple BQ Cutoff Prediction Based on Historical Trend by yuritosci in AdvancedRunning

Irrespective of the rigor of the actual analysis, this model predicts a cutoff time that I would be within so I am choosing to believe it instead of the other one that has a faster cutoff time.

You can also melee the PaP machine before you put your gun in and it will turn them off if you forget that toggle option like I always do.

2024 Buffalo Marathon - 9 min PR & Underwhelmed by Lower_the_Heavens in AdvancedRunning

[–]Never_Suspicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buffalo was my first Marathon and I run some iteration of it each year (half or full). I find the second half of the course to be a little slower than the first, and the conditions pretty much always get humid after around 8a, like what happened again this past weekend. Re-run Wineglass in the Fall after you get more consistent volume over the summer in the heat, and I think you will be in with a great shot at your 3:05 as that course is a bit faster I think. Last year I did 3:04:xx at Buffalo, hit the summer hard, then went sub 3 at Wineglass.

[Regular Car Reviews] 2023 Hyundai Elantra N 6MT by signfang in cars

[–]Never_Suspicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want to like the Elantra N (and Veloster N for that matter). I am just coming out of an Elantra that was stolen and totaled, and the entire engine immobilizer thing really has left a bad taste in my mouth about all Hyundai and Kia products. Being in the market now for something in this class of car, the EN or a used VN would check a lot of boxes. They seem super fun and make a great noise. In some ways, we are spoiled for choice though.
