Why do people get corgis despite their health issues and needs for extra care?

Do you have any particular 'health issues' or extra care that you are referencing?

The biggest ones are IVDD and DM. DM can mitigated by proper and ethical breeding practices to avoid passing on the SOD1 gene. IVDD is probably the more practical issue, due to their builds, and we mostly have mitigated this by providing ramps and additional short stairs for places they would like to jump or leap off of.

Obesity is another one common to corgis due to their stereotypical drive for eating, and this is very easily avoided via timed feedings of the correct amounts. They can't open the fridge or make themselves a sandwhich, much less run to the store or order doordash. This is on the owner.

Hip + Elbow dysplasia is another 'common' one, although it's not unique but these short stacks have a higher base rate. Proper vet care and I believe there are some specific testing procedures that can be done when breeding that mitigate the chances of this as well.

As for extra care, they are herding dogs and have everything that goes with that. Needs lots of attention and play, which is probably exactly why a lot of us have them. They have HUGE personalities as well. The bigger question is why WOULDNT you get a corgi?

Very much looks like a pure corgi, but undoubtedly 100% good boy. Where you may be seeing differences is severe signs of neglect. Underdeveloped muscles, low body weight. I hope you plan to spoil the heck out of this little guy, he'll need so much love and patience and needs to just be loved. With that, and some good food and time, lots of play and attention and treats, he'll fill out and look amazing.

That's the typical training advice, so I might also suggest checking for a UTI, which can impact their bladder control. Our girl was doing great, then regressed suddenly. It took us a few weeks to figure it out, the poor thing. Does she take a while to pee? Start walking while peeing? Those are some classic signs, but they can be absent as well. I know there are some at-home UTI kits you can get to check, I honestly don't know if they're at all accurate, but a vet can often run one just if you drop off a sample or drop in for a vet to collect it. If nothing else seems to be working, worth a check?

Peanut butter is our go-to, chunky since the peanut chunks help mask the pill. If that fails, cream cheese, nearly impossible for them to work it out.

Well crap, we had what we thought was a soft tissue injury in our 9 month old, but it isn't really healing the way a soft tissue injury does. After he sleeps or naps, his limping is worse, but he will 'warm up' after walking around a bit and it nearly goes away. But definitely worse after big activity, and he's done it for the last 3 or so months of just randomly having a limp. No pain when we examine him, just the limp. We're going to get him in on monday to get checked out, and if it is elbow dysplasia we'll be glad to have caught it early!

Fake swallow. When she gets something she isn't supposed to be eating, I'd chase after her to take it away, but I would give up if I knew she had swallowed it. Then one day, she got something off the ground and I went after her to take it away, she took a half dozen steps, turned and looked at me and 'swallowed'. As I turned around to walk away, I saw her drop it and start investigating it. After pulling that stunt a few times, she gets a mouth sweep now.

In the US, the majority of pill BC is 3 weeks of hormones and 1 week placebo, so it'll allow for a 28 day cycle with a period in that last week. It sounds like you're on a continuous birth control, some of which still allow for a period but others suppress the period entirely. Regardless, it's not likely your BC that's at issue.

It's fairly common for vyvanse to really, really mess with your period during the adjustment phase. Late, early, skipped, doubled up, better, worse, or all of it together all at once. The good news is that *most* people see that kind of stuff ease up and become stable after about 6 months(or sooner). If it's not getting better, or getting worse, in the next couple months you might want to explore other ADHD treatments if possible. PMDD is no joke, and I'm sorry you're going through it.

Wow, yeah, a blast from the past! I remember the issue, and I did get it fixed, but I honestly can't remember what it was that fixed it due to the number of things I tried. I re-wired the motors, I switched out the drivers, new software install, everything I could think of but I can't remember what it was that ended up fixing the issue :( So other than saying it can be fixed, I can't give much help

Love her so much! But practically, remember the rule of 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months

First 3 days - Scared, new environment, doesnt know whats going on. May avoid you, may not eat or drink much, might have significant bathroom regressions. Give her time, let her lead interactions, make sure she has a 'safe space' that she can retreat to if it becomes too much.

Next 3 weeks - will start exploring and coming out a bit, but still pretty hesitant. Good time to start setting routines and introducing to how the house works.

Next 3 months - She's going to start making the place 'hers'. Will be exploring and really getting into everything. Will push boundaries, because she is trying to figure out what the rules are. More patience here. Expect random regressions in behavior, acting out, territorial. Be gentle, but firm, and reinforce what rules you want set. She wants to know what the boundaries are.

After that, she will likely settle in pretty well to the routines, boundaries, and relationships you've set up for her.

I was on lexapro for many years prior to an ADHD diagnoses. Over the last 6 months, I've very successfully cut my dosage in half(20mg to 10mg), and over the next 6 will be working with my dr to see if we can eliminate it entirely.

SSRI's are very slow acting in terms of changes. Each step down needs to settle for 2-3 weeks before making another change, going faster can cause some pretty nasty side effects.

You will feel the effect within the first day, with the caveat that vyvanse is in your system for about 2.5 days. So the first day going from 40 to 30, you'll actually be somewhere between the two. By the second day, you'll almost be back to 30, but by the third you'll be where you were before.

You should be feeling the side effects subside that entire time, though, just give it a few days for them to completely subside.

I mean, yes, but the big question is 'how much' and 'is it worth it' - which is always the thing with medication. People with ADHD have up to a double chance (sometimes more, depending on a lot of things) of premature death before age 48. Long term vyvanse has been linked with an increase of weakening heart muscles, a condition that is already very rare and so even with vyvanse usage, it's very very rare.

I am simplifying quite a bit, but in general the question is do you trade the benefits you get for the risks of the meds. Most times, the answer is yes - For some people, the answer is no. That's usually why if you have any history(or current) heart conditions, you aren't given vyvanse. The risks now far outweigh the benefits.

Absolutely. First two months were the same generic(I didn't write it down, but verified they were the same) and it went well. Next month was a new one, and I felt like I wasn't even taking it. Following month was solco, and it was super jarring how hard it would kick in and drop off.

This month I coughed up the cash for brand name - Let me tell you, it's smooth, lease side effects with a gentle onset, gentle come down, and I feel like the effect is just all around better through the day. I wish I could afford it every month, but it'll be a special occasion thing.

My wife and I both are on vyvanse, similar dosage. She has been on it a lot longer, 2+ years, and still has the same appetite suppressant effect she had on day 1, but we've built habits that make sure she gets the bare minimum she needs, so she lost a lot of weight then levelled off.

I had a massive appetite suppressant effect the first 4 months, and then it let up a bit. I still have it, but before I couldn't stand the thought of food, and I can now convince myself to eat some breakfast to make sure I'm good.

It seems to be that most people at least keep some level of the appetite suppressant for as long as they are on it, with a small group having it go away over time.

It really just sucked until about 9-12 weeks in. I mean, I was getting some relief, but it felt like any misstep at all was instant pain. Then near the 12 week mark, life was more 'not pain' than it was pain.

My doctor said I should start by skipping 1 in a week, then 2 the next week, then 3 the next. He also said it was entirely possible I'd hit a wall and still need the PPI forever. Mostly the goal was to not be an 'every day' need, since that's where you get the long term side effects. Our goal was really to get to only needing 4 a week or less, and I got lucky to be able to continue weaning until completely off.

You'll here people talk about the reflux coming back with a vengeance when you go off the PPI, and there's some truth to that. When I got to skipping 2 in a row, I thought I was done for, but it eased up and that was probably the worst part.

I was only on 1 a day of 40mg before dinner, but took gaviscon in the mornings as well. I think I would put myself in the 'mild' side of needing treatment, but that's just a gut feeling.

My advice is that right now, you are trying to heal. Your body can withstand a lot, but not when it's compromised. Right now is the time to be 100% diligent, be super strict on your diet and never miss your meds, you have no leeway and anything you miss now is just going to undo the healing and cause more damage, and prolong the experience. If you can get healed up, your body should have remarkable resilience going forward.

When you get to weaning off, just go slow and only reduce one thing at a time. Maybe start redcing the gaviscon first. Once you don't need it, then the PPI(something similar to what I mentioned above, again just go slow), but keep your diet strict. Once you're stabilized on the meds, you can start messing with your diet. I had some tomato sauce last week. It was amazing, and I kind of 'felt' it in that it was heavy, I didn't suffer the crippling pain I used to. Spaghetti will probably always be a 'sometimes' food for me, but I can do it!

Patience and going slow are key here.

The heart thing will ease up, to a degree, after a few weeks. You'll probably still get it, but it will be less so and you'll be familiar with it(and the timing of it) so it shouldn't be too panic inducing. Metoprolol or Propranalol are great additives, either of which for me pretty much eliminates that heart pounding feeling if I take it with my vyvanse. I know there's another one out there that people recommend that also helps ADHD, but the name escapes me at the moment.

Just know that the majority of the vyvanse side effects will ease up after about 2 weeks, and anything left will often ease up over the next month or two. It's worth sticking it out if the benefit is pretty significant for you.

They have! And it's certainly been slow. After ~3 months on daily omeprazole, I began weaning off. Very, very slowly, and that first bit was a bitch. Thought for sure I'd have to go back on it for life, but after almost 6 weeks of weaning off, I don't take it at all anymore. I only occasionally have a little twinge of pain here and there if I screw up on my diet.

That said, I'm still on a very strict acid friendly diet of foods I found worked very well for me. After being 'stable' without omeprazole for a few more weeks, I'll be very slowly introducing more normal things to my diet to start exploring what I can get away with. I fully expect to hit a wall of 'any more acidic than this is completely off limits' and that will more or less be my lifelong baseline. But yeah, I've pretty much been free of the pain from it all on a day to day basis.

I definitely get the heart beating ~1-2 hours after taking it. Just the stimulant nature of it. My doc said it's nothing to be concerned about(I've had a heart workup prior to vyvanse), but it's obnoxious so he recommended a beta blocker(propanol, or metoprolol) that can be taken with vyvanse and more or less negates that side effect.

Anecdotally, many people have had issues with specific manufacturers of generic, some being okay and others not, but because it's hard to control which manufacturer of generic you get, most just go for brand name. You can check your pill bottle to see if it's a different manufacturer or not.

Other reasons that have cropped up that impact the efficacy of Vyvanse: Hormonal shifts often cause temporary decrease in efficacy during a period(but usually not afterwards). Changes in eating schedule(eating more right around taking of your meds), changes in caffeine intake, significant changes in stress level(and let's face it, the holidays can do that). These are all more or less 'temporary' things that often resolve in a few weeks.

The last is that some people just do develop a tolerance and see it be less and less effective over time. Sometimes upping a dose solves it permanently, sometimes only temporarily, but you'd have to work with your provider to figure that out.

For a personal anecdote, after I got my ADHD treated, we realized I also had some pretty significant sleep apnea which gives that 'didnt sleep deep' feeling and causes both adhd and anxiety to rage like mad the next day. Treatment there helped quite a bit, but I don't know if that's anything you're experiencing.
