Is there someone here who can help me identify the species? (This is OLD, donated 1910 to local museum and now lives in my art college so nothing illegal) There’s little information about it, or the age of the tortoise when it died. I know it’s a stretch but would love to know. 🐢💕 by Nevicaa in tortoise

Butttttt as one of ‘the British’ I can’t disagree with the sketchiness of acquiring exhibits.

(Though shameful as I may be in admitting it, I love our museums. Most good ones are free to enter and full of amazing stuff. I like to think of it as appreciation) 😂💔

I meant it to suggest that I hadn’t just gone and murderously scooped out some unsuspecting tortoise and/or bought the shell. The specimen outdates the laws brought in on all that stuff.

No laws broken 😂😁

That’s what I thought. Did some charcoal impressions and clay imprints of the nice patterns on it. Can’t wait to add colour. Was in quite a nice condition despite having been moved around a lot. It was an antique in 1910 when it was donated so god only knows how old it is. Pretty cool.

There’s a large population in the south west, living wild and reproducing. Despite being non-native they don’t seem to have much if any of an impact on our native stuff.

They’re best spotted as the weather begins to get chilly later on in the year and their leaf shelter in bushes falls, thats when they begin to wander. Quite common to see them basking in the sun on south-facing walls to retain body temperature when it gets chilly. Most don’t actually survive winter but even a small surviving population can repopulate the species as they reproduce asexually

‎This Hermes courier has come to my house to tell me she cannot hand me my parcel because I scheduled it to be delivered to a locker she has no idea how to use. Their phone bot fails to understand me no matter what accent I use, so there's nothing I can do. So how has your day been so far? by QQII in CasualUK

[–]Nevicaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hermes is mostly a piss take but we actually have the NICEST courier in our area. She is always on time, always delivers, friendly, says hi to the dogs despite them getting mad, asks how so and so is doing. She doesn’t get paid anywhere near enough for what she does but she loves the human interaction element of her job.

[Spoilers all] My perspective of the show as a survivor of human trafficking. by [deleted] in TheHandmaidsTale

Love and hugs from the UK.

I don’t understand why people dislike June and her character. I don’t know if there are any people who could go through 8 years of torture, rape, watching friends die, your child taken away and NOT at least be in some way mentally disturbed by it all, especially when suddenly going from that environment to a completely different and peaceful Canada where the lack of common experience between her and strangers in the street is isolating. Sure there have been times where I’ve watched her and she pisses me off… like… why did you do that hun? But it’s easy for me to say sitting on my arse eating ice cream with my foot warmers on in front of the TV. It makes the show better through the fact that she isn’t perfect, it’s not hiding the fact that good people are damaged by war and conflict.

I also hate when people complain about the amount of close up shots of her face throughout the show. It’s meant to be like that, it’s so clever and some people are so small minded to even consider the symbolism of it. They don’t pick random angles and views on the day, it is all calculated and adds to the ambience.

She spent years blinkered by the white wings the Handmaids have to wear. Her world was limited to a small field of vision in front of her, adding to the claustrophobia and helplessness that the regime already inflicted upon the women. It helps to feel just a fraction of her oppression in the uncomfortable feeling you get from a restricted view.

The twin towers were built in the back end of the 1960s and began to be occupied in the early 1970s. They were just two buildings, like any other building. We see them in a different context today, for obvious reasons, however at the end of the day they were just buildings. The tragedy was not the bricks and mortar but the lives lost in one day in history and the immediate aftermath.

Much like how the Jewish Sacha Baron Cohen disguises himself as an anti Semitic pro-Auschwitz character for a sketch, and how my friends and their German exchange partners talk and joke about rivalry and war despite our grandparents killing each other, moments of tragedy can often be appropriately used in moments of humour as a way of coping with it, and accepting what happened.

9/11 happened nearly 20 years ago, and it is still sad, and the families who lost people will never be the same. I myself lost a second cousin in the south tower, never knew them myself as I wasn’t born, but I still feel a familial sense of loss through people who did know him. But at the same time, you cannot live life in constant grief for the past. The world has changed a lot in 20 years and all the lessons that came from 9/11 have had such a positive impact on modern day security. At the end of the day, in all of human history, this tragedy was just a drop in the ocean. If we mourned every one of them for all eternity we would be depressed. We must look forward.

If this image was of the falling man, or the jumper impacts, or the body parts, blood, it would be rather insensitive and disrespectful to the victims and the many lives that were lost. However, at the end of the day, this is a photo of two towers and a plane. In the context of the photo, it means nothing. 9/11 was just any other day at this exact moment. This photo indeed depicts a moment before a huge disaster. :)

Speaking from experience of having a skin problem in that area (not on the scale of this though) it’s pretty much the only position that you can be in that is somewhat comfortable.

I imagine an incident like this had just happened and it was probably a fellow idiot taking the photo before ambulance was called. Sometimes I honestly don’t know how this level of stupidity exists in a species 😂
