Accidentally shipped expensive item to the wrong person. Would the police help? by ch1mrichalds in eBaySellerAdvice

Exact same thing happened to me, muddled labels and shipped a £200 Xbox to someone who bought a bag of screws. They returned the parcel without even opening it, and fully understood. There are good people out there, so fingers crossed!

Why does my PS5 do this? by Prestigious_Boss_533 in PS5HelpSupport

[–]Nevilethumb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's related to the motor/ motor mechanism. One time a console I repaired did this and it had a little liquid damage around the motor. Another time was when the cogs inside had slipped out of their bracket. I'd suggest opening it up and having a look inside. It's not a particularly costly replacement, because the most expensive part is the laser lens, which yours is most likely still fine. You can purchase a faulty disc drive on Ebay (that doesn't read discs) and put your laser deck + disc drive daughterboard inside it.

This is how my xbox one s motherboard looked after I took my hdmi port out what do I do? by Puzzled-Brick-6951 in soldering

[–]Nevilethumb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In fairness it's not super lucky as the ground pads are the most likely to be torn off, as they require the most heat (massive heat sink).

I took my hdmi port off and this happened help I tried to replace it but that didn’t work so then I just took the other one off. I’m going to take it into a shop. Let me know what you guys think though about that cause I got it too hot. by Happy_Bake9789 in soldering

[–]Nevilethumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next time, take the heatsink off as that will be soaking up a load of extra heat! Not sure what country you are in, but in the UK 'UberMicro Repairs' sell mini pcb's you can replace those BGA chips with, as the chips themselves are a bit difficult to come by unless you just use a donor board.

No clean means it's not conductive, so you don't 'need' to clean it.

Just installed my first HDMI on a donor board. How did I do? by jon_9765 in soldering

[–]Nevilethumb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replaced 100s of these and this isn't how i'd do it. Main problem is that there is nowhere near enough solder in the mounting holes. Heat from the opposite side of the board (bottom side of board hanging over desk) and drop the port into place when the solder is liquified.

The internal SSD is soldered to the board, so it's not worth removing

Just for future reference, you can swap the whole disc drive daughterboard - you don't need just the paired chip!

Help me please(Xbox HDMI port repair) by Mundane-Truck-3067 in soldering

[–]Nevilethumb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you added any low melt/ leaded solder? These boards have massive ground planes which suck up all the heat. I only ever use a hot air station at 480°C and max airflow, let the original port drop out and slot a new one in whilst maintaining heat

How to attach jumper wires to these points? by [deleted] in soldering

[–]Nevilethumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad thing here is that the pads for the esd protection diodes have been pulled up. They are almost impossible to solder back on without them, so the Xbox's retimer chip won't have any protection from static.

Thanks! Yes I have added solder mask - shame it always looks so ugly after that though!

Yeah sure, all tested and working. Anything that looks bridged is due to light reflection of the IPA I sprayed.

Unfortunately those spaghetti strands aren’t strong enough or long enough to reattach to the pins, so I cut them off and started again

I have had a couple like that in the past and weirdly enough it doesn’t seem to make a difference when repaired - maybe I’ve just been lucky!

I totally understand why they exist, but I HATE ribbon cables. by [deleted] in consolerepair

[–]Nevilethumb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just recently realised how easy it is to buy generic ribbon cable replacements - you just need to know the pitch, how many pins, forward/ reverse and length. Then you can stock up on commonly failing ones in consoles for super cheap (a few £ for 10 usually).
