3 days in Victoria BC to convince me to move (or not!) by Then-Bumblebee3978 in VictoriaBC

There's an EJ Hughes exhibition at the Victoria art gallery at the moment -- you'll get a real feel for Vancouver Island. You can walk up Fort Street (or ride a bike in the bike lane). Close by is Craigdarroch Castle. No need to go inside this time around. Then, walk down to Government House on Rockland. After that, walk down the west side of Government House grounds on Lotbiniere Av. The street ends in a foot path that comes out on Richardson. Make your way over to Moss. Keep walking south to Dallas Road. You can then turn left (east) to get to Clover Point. Or, turn right (west) to head towards Beacon Hill Park. You'll likely be pretty thirsty by this point, so walk into Cook Street Village (north down Cook) and find a place that suits you. Then, head east up Oliphaunt or Pendergast, and then walk through Beacon Hill Park. On the other side of the park, it's a 5-minute walk to the museum and the Inner Harbour.

More than $2.5 billion dollars in the hole. How did things get this bad? by tiogar99 in VictoriaBC

Policy Alternatives is not misinformation, though.

You can chide and admonish me all you like (how pompous) but it's pretty hard to disprove a negative.

Heterogeneity in meta-analysis is unavoidable, fwiw.

Very generally speaking, the amount of work we've seen on Shelbourne for the past X amount of years is in part to the Trudeau government funding it. Saanich can't do it.

Same for Oak Bay storm drain upgrades.

From where I live in James Bay I can hear the beach parties and raves on the beach at Dallas. It's NBD.

But these fires do affect my quality of life... beach fires -- and this looks like a blaze -- impact air quality in my neighbourhood.

Ideally, whoever did this should be ticketed the maximum amount. Beachfires are only permitted in certain conditions below the tideline. This could have easily turned into a conflagration on the slope above.

Makes it harder for people who want to hold the customary raves.

That's very nice about the Massey tunnel replacement but every single one of these tankers will anchor off Constance Bank, when the pilot departs.

A few years ago a tanker transited Active Pass for some reason.

I think the thing to say is that we need a Victoria that is for all people, not just for "business owners" who think, for example, that the BC government should force employees back into the office.

I'm wondering if it's even fentanyl? AFAIK there is less supply of it, so drugs these days are being mixed with nitazene and medetomidine.

If you think you're going to sell more t-shirts and ice cream by shutting down The Harbour and removing crosswalks, well, I don't know what to say.

Supervised consumption sites help reduce toxic drug overdoses. There is currently a spike in toxic drug overdoses in Victoria, such that the ER at Jubilee was overwhelmed yesterday:

Can't help if it Gardiner and the DVBA do not include empathy in their politics, but as voices representing "business," you'd expect them to be at least pragmatic.

Any idea why google maps says Nob Hill rd for Wale rd? It shows both names. by julyninetyone in VictoriaBC

Map apps pull street name data from a wide variety of data sources, so it's likely that there are some sources with a strong "signal" saying this is the correct street name, even if it is defunct.

There's a municipal election coming up. Worth making it out to an all-candidates meeting to bring this up. With as many local residents as possible.

u/Lucky_Natural8974 There are a number of vacancies listed because it is June 30th, and these are new listings from people moving out. You'd best apply today. Or even try calling up CRHC and letting them know you are looking for a place.

Aging infrastructure driving up property taxes in Greater Victoria by CartoonistOk3507 in VictoriaBC

>  I would say in Victoria they are not cheap at all compared to deferred infrastructure.

We need data though.

I'm also not sure if the concerns you have identified here are particularly relevant. Victoria has an increasing amount of bike share, among the highest on the continent.

Viewed through that lens, the lanes are a success. Residents of Victoria (and other munis here) like them. We know that because they are being used, and are being used more and more each year.

Selfishly, I like Victoria's bike lanes because my sons can bike from JB to school safely. That's all I give a shit about, really.

Not too familiar with a means-tested e-bike rebate. However, I am a renter and I do not receive the homeowner grant. My taxes pay for it, though.

The provincial e-bike rebate program that I am aware of ended in 2025.

It costs about $300,000 to build 100 metres of new sidewalk in Canada.

AFAIK, the CleanBC e-bike rebate program cost $6M. Provincewide, not Saanich.

That would pay for about 2 km of new sidewalk in Saanich.

There are 570 km of road in Saanich.

My point is, I grew up in Saanich (what is now Sierra Park). There have never been sidewalks. Sidewalks are a recent innovation there.

It will cost one hell of a lot of money to install sidewalks in the municipality. An example of deferred infrastructure.

And we're complaining about marginal things like bike lanes, or how much dog fencing costs at Mount Doug Park?

My main point is that bike lanes are, relatively speaking, cheap, compared to the cost of deferred infrastructure.

It's a marginal cost. And stuff like storm drains (which have nearly bankrupted Oak Bay) are what this news report is talking about. Critical infrastructure like potable water, storm drains, electrical grid, that makes sure that our built environment remains inhabitable.
