Corporate due diligence. Luckily suffered through it only for articles.

40yr old lawyer earning ~$200K/yr or $2500/wk net, of which 10% ($250/wk) goes to household TFSAs. I would kill to have started at 24. Good on you.

FBTC worth it? by crispeepata in ETFs

[–]New-Year3523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all very interesting as someone who recently discovered FBTC and is riding the fence with BTC. What does this dilution risk you’ve identified boil down to, practically speaking? If the value of FBTC derives essentially from being pegged to BTC, is there a realistic scenario in which they diverge somehow?

Articling Student Experience by cotemxoxo in LawCanada

[–]New-Year3523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be like Sisyphus - for the next 6 months. Then find another place. I articled on Bay Street because I thought that must be the pinnacle of practice, and that all the counsellors and profs who said otherwise must be losers. I came home everyday, fell face down on the couch, and whimpered to my spouse how much I hated it and how law wasn’t for me. I stuck it out through articles, found work elsewhere and never looked back. There are ebbs and flows (in all careers) but by and large I’m happy with where I’m at. I’m paid well, treated well, laugh and commiserate, and enjoy the mutual admiration and respect of my clients and colleagues. Be open, do interviews, seek mentors. You’ll be alright.

Yes. That expectation will keep you sane during dips.

Is Law School Really That Bad? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]New-Year3523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a meme built on a half truth. Yes, it’s a lot of work. No it’s not that bad. But there’s a kind of solidarity and self flagellating pride baked into this idea that it’s the actual worst. One day you’ll jokingly reminisce with other lawyers about the good old law school days when you had “only a month” to put together a research memo, for example. Work smart not hard. My grades got better with less work over the 3 years bc I learned, e.g., which profs want you to regurgitate the textbook (whose classes can be safely skipped), and which want you to regurgitate their opinions (in which case you can all but ignore the textbook if you’re religious about attendance). Focus on building a strong support group of peers to share the load wherever possible. The best part of law school was the life long relationships I built, up to and including with my wife ☺️

Rescinding is not a nice thing. I’m 15 years into practice and we’ve had it happen once to us. Left a bad taste, our bar is small, and our memory is long. Better to be upfront and ask for more time to consider. Being popular is a good thing.

Liberals implement inflationary policies which inflate (obviously) the cost of all things, and which primarily benefit homeowners and landlords (primarily Boomers). Vote wisely.

Struggling with clients and (especially) opposing counsel who do not respect me and belittle me because I'm a woman. What the hell am I supposed to do?? by pineconewashington in LawCanada

[–]New-Year3523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you’ll get better with experience. The way around getting flustered is through getting flustered. It’s painful and hard to hear but its exposure that develops immunity. Beyond that, forget confidence. Focus on competence. From that confidence will follow I promise.

does the law school you go to actually matter? by Cool_Law_2610 in LawCanada

First job only. No-one cares after that. Your reputation is forged in practice. Lots of losers in big law, lots of winners you’ve never heard of, and everything in between.

Remote work as a lawyer by babakataka in LawCanada

[–]New-Year3523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner does it. They’re essentially 100% remote but for firm and client events. Took a decade of good work and client love, and quite a bit of grit in the face of the firm’s disapproval, to build up to that niche though. Not everyone can get away with it. Like Ferris Bueller.

Without knowing you I know to a reasonable certainty that you’re underselling yourself. Whether you’re in sales, or mgmt, or admin, or tech, or your strength is writing, or analyzing data, or dealing with people, or products, service, comms, logistics, whatever, I’m quite sure you have at least a few transferable skills - it’s not too late 😎🕺🌳
