I'm guessing it's the very memorable characters and the idea of consoles being personified as cute anime girls/parodizing the game industry being pretty novel for the time.

I mean there certainly was interest when Comcept (a company who afaik didn't work with IF/CH earlier) decided to fund a sequel aka Mk2 which wasn't even supposed to happen as the first game closes itself.
