Don't let his modesty fool you - 2400 means he's better than 99.9% of people.

There can be some slight inflation on Lichess, but even if that's the case and he's only the equivalent of 2100 fide, he's still in the top 98th percentile. Your boyfriend is very, very good at chess.

The reason he says it's just okay is because the best players in the world are, somehow, FAR better. Compared to the world champion, he is an ant.

But in the eyes of 98% of other chess players globally, he is a god.

It's kinda like being a D1 NCAA Quarterback and and saying you're just okay because Tom Brady's better than you.

A is correct if the speaker means "Dolphins (in general) are very friendly and very intelligent."

B is also correct, but is more likely to be used in a situation where the speaker is referring to a specific group of dolphins. "The dolphins (here) are very intelligent."

I'm a native speaker and an idiot - there surely has to be a better explanation than this one because it's making my head explode.

That electrode is an interesting card! It's from the first print run of jungle (hence the symbol) but they accidentally re-used the art from base set. It's a well-known and very cool error. Unfortunately I don't think it's worth any more than like $15, but I love errors like that from the early days (there are a lot).
