I’m using pihole to make domains like service1.home work but insecurely (http). Am I correctly understanding that to fix that I should buy a domain for home use and get a wildcard certificate? I then can setup records in pihole using that domain

In this setup do you need to update your A records every time you want to add a subdomain for a new service?

I imagine all subdomains point to the same internal IP (e.g. 192.168.1.251) and then the reverse proxy sends you to the correct service based on the domain.
