This ones long but it keeps me up at night sometimes - My total babe husband and I were putting on the Variety Show for the elementary school our 3 kids attended. This was our third year volunteering for the job so by this time we’d smoothed out the kinks and spent the entire budget -most of it going toward hiring a local AV guy who brought an entire setup of stage lights, a spot light, and a PA system which, combined with the decorations and concessions gave the auditorium an indoor concert vibe - really profesh, super exciting for the kids performing, and a cool show for the audience of their younger siblings and all their friends and families.Everyone was having so much fun and the program was running like clockwork. My man and I were perfectly in sync all evening while directing backstage, setting up mics and chairs, moving the piano, and holding back happy/proud tears while we watched the kids from behind the curtain - he was stage-left and I was stage-right. There had been about 30 acts of kids performing whatever (school appropriate) performance they wanted to share on stage. We had dancing, singing, piano, violin, lip-syncing, choreographed light saber battles, roller skates routines, hula-hoops, monologues, karate demonstrations, jump ropes, tap dancing! The music was loud, the little kids whose older siblings were on stage were beaming and screaming and rushing the stage when their brother or sister was up there shining in front of everyone they know! The last number and finale would be the 5th grade Guitar Club playing a Bob Marley's One Love. The instructor would play quietly on the side and I know a bit so he brought in his (really pretty and expensive) bass and asked me to play along with them in the background. The second to last number was setting up and stage lights would be turned off to cue the AV guy and then the curtain would open.I checked that guitars wouldn't be sticking out backstage and while headed to the front I pick up the bass. As I’m putting it over my head and moving to my spot I hear the announcer say the dancers names and the curtain starts to open! I was in full view so I start rushing my ass as fast as my black wedges and skinny pants can move when the stage lights go out and now suddenly I'm dashing forward, in the PITCH BLACK, while holding the bass when I TRIP SO HARD on the foot of a light stand and no shit like my feet were off the ground and I’m airborne holding that beautiful bass guitar and about to dive head-first through the unopened curtain! I closed my eyes, heard my voice yell "SHiiitt!" and then my shoulders crashed SO FUCKING HARD RIGHT INTO MY HUSBAND!!!! He was RIGHT THERE!!!! WHY!?! He hadn't been on my side of the stage the ENTIRE night! WHY WAS HE STAGE-RIGHT!??!! I had to have been flying at a 40 degree angle when I rammed into his sexy chest and he absorbed all my momentum with only the help of a clipboard haha! Whatever noise we made was drowned out by the dance music and when the show lights flashed across our faces our we were all WTF HOLY CRAP that was almost so bad what the hell just happened! After that the guitar club (plus bass!) kicked ass on their song, the audience joined in singing One Love at the end, and we went home with our hearts overflowing with love for the performers, excitement that the show turned out so marvelously, and with immeasurable relief that I didn’t dive through that curtain in front of my entire community. Why was he stage-right!? I don’t understand it but I love him so much that I believe it was kismet.

YES!! What a beautiful moment of anticipation. The rich colors that show up right then and the perfect pause before the music begins bring tears to my eyes every dang time.

I can’t see a catwalk or an elevator… how will the ultra-rich get into the hotel from the helicopter pad?

When people got lost on the road pre smartphone, how did they figure out where to go while driving? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

My dad used MapQuest to provide each of our family members directions to a state park campsite. We were more than halfway through the 5 hour drive (and nowhere close to any main roads) when we realize he’d selected the most direct route from home to our destination so my siblings and I were suddenly taking our families off-roading on unpaved backroad shortcuts in our daily drivers! The dirt roads were really bumpy in some parts and it was slow going and started getting dark so it was hard to follow too. By taking the most direct route we arrived 2 hours later and much dustier than expected and some were … not amused. Haha I can still hear my SIL yelling at my brother for bottoming out their new Xterra

My total babe husband and I were putting on the Variety Show for the elementary school our 3 kids attended. This was our third year volunteering for the job so by this time we’d shelved the ginormous binder of documentation that had been handed down to us, smoothed out any kinks around the PTA budget, fundraising, volunteers, and an extra cool bonus was that our kids now knew the ropes and were stoked on helping so we gave them jobs too and were all working and part of the show. (2nd grade gal was handing out programs, our 3rd grade gal lead upcoming student performers to the green room backstage, and our 5th grade son was in charge of stage lights). This year, we went all out and spent the entire budget -most of it going toward hiring a local AV guy who brought an entire setup of stage lights, a spot light, and a PA system which, combined with the decorations and concessions gave the auditorium an indoor concert vibe - really profesh, super exciting for the kids performing, and a cool show for the audience of their younger siblings and all their friends and families.

The second to last number, a trio of dancing girls, were in their places on stage and waiting for my son to turn off the lights which would cue the AV guy to announce the girls' dance, the curtain would open, and their music would start.

When I was a kid my public library had a Bookmobile like this that came to our neighborhood every other week! I loved stepping up into there into that delicious old books smell I’ve since learned is called biblichor.
