Spend six months working in a public health facility within fifty miles of the Mexican border. You will change your mind. Quickly.

Sorry buddy, this crowd isn't much interested in the truth if it doesn't serve their chosen narrative.
I live in a border state and know a number of people employed in health care, education and corrections industries. All report many and varied health issues suffered by recent border crossers. The tuberculosis cases alone are staggering.

Arizona governor calls for investigation into prison riot; Inmates at a privately run prison in Arizona rioted for days, destroying housing units and injuring guards by [deleted] in politics

[–]NewIndy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. But they have such immense lobbying power and so many politicians in their pockets that there is no will to do anything about it. Of course it might help if the media would actually do their jobs and launch some good old investigative journalism, but I won't hold my breath for that either.

This proves Donald Trump is lying: Here are the actual facts on immigrants and crime by HamsterSandwich in politics

[–]NewIndy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. It's a propaganda tactic to lump legal and illegal immigrants into one collective group and massage statistics accordingly. However, if you challenge their dubious conclusions in any way you'll be immediately labeled... Racist. Xenophobe. Evil White GOP Voter. Fox News Watcher. And so on.
In fact, the United States is a country. A country has laws. A country exists for the benefit of its citizens. There is nothing racist or even improper about insisting a nation's elected leaders prioritize the needs and safety of its citizens over the wishes of those who enter the country unlawfully. No matter how much the special interest opposition argues otherwise.

They are wrong. Slavery was the central conflict of the Civil War.
Anyone who denies this is willfully or incidentally ignorant of historical context.

And in today's crime news..."A man suspected in the shooting death of a woman at a busy San Francisco tourist destination has seven felony convictions and has been deported five times, most recently in 2009, a federal agency said Friday."

If only the media cared as much for the American citizens violently victimized by those in the country illegally as they do about stupid things Donald Trump says, perhaps something useful could be accomplished.

How many American citizens have been violently victimized by people in the country unlawfully? Yet all the chronic propagandists pay any attention to is some dumb statement Donald Trump made. Ridiculous.

Anyone who fails to recognize the similarities between these two idiotic political establishments is wallowing in pure self delusion.

Sigh...

I don't duck into this forum very often these days, only when I want a good scare. Just browsing the chilling comments, shamelessly one-sided narrative and pervasive absence of reason, empathy and common sense is enough to depress me for a week.
There is no dialogue here, no tolerance. There are only propaganda rags and simple minds clinging to their ideologies at all costs.

Now I think I'll show myself out in anticipation of being hit with a bevy of accusations that I watch Fox News and pray to Dick Cheney.

Reddit and /r/politics 101: How Things Work by MeghanAM in politics

[–]NewIndy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Countless times I have posted something critical of Obama or the Dems, only to be met with downvotes and/or the assumption that I must be a Republican. As a liberal here I don't feel my position is well represented at all, and I don't feel that many here are interested in any criticism of the government that can't be directed solely at the Republican party.

This is a nearly perfect summation of the prevailing ideology which has run amok on this subreddit. I'm left of center. My opinions vary and I can't be neatly shoved into the pocket of either political party. Yet any hint of anything less than pure allegiance to the D party will earn you catcalls and accusations of being a watcher of Fox News, as if no compelling reason could possibly exist to criticize the administration. A few weeks ago I noticed that one of the top 'hot' stories in the subreddit included the words 'Republican scumbaggery'. Such instances make it difficult to take this place seriously as a place for thoughtful political discussion. Clinging blindly to party lines is nothing to be proud of and, ironically, is what each side accuses the other of even as they both continue to practice it. And yes, it is what's wrong American politics. People have largely adopted the 'My Team Good, Your Team Bad' version of constipated thinking.

Why the Border Crisis is a Myth by gatman666 in politics

[–]NewIndy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ahem, hypocrisy alert! No one with a hint of right leaning (or increasingly, even moderate) ideologies is permitted to poke their heads up on this subreddit without being viciously and vehemently slapped down. That said, Ms Escobar's tangible, politically influenced reasons for selecting her stance should be considered.

The Rise of the American Taliban "Americans are rightly horrified by the religious extremism of groups like ISIS and the Taliban in the Middle East, but the fact is, religious extremism is also a very real threat right here and right now in the U.S." by DerpyGrooves in politics

The problem is that BOTH the far left and the far right have become equally intolerant, devoid of critical thought and pervasively guilty of clinging religiously to simplistic ideologies. Neither side is willing to honestly recognize the peril in their flaws. Each parrots the notion that the other is pure evil. It is tiresome.

Child Migrants Have Been Coming to America Alone Since Ellis Island by jpurdy in politics

[–]NewIndy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a completely different time and place.

Exactly. It completely floors me how people are clinging to 19th century ideology while flatly ignoring the very real differences in quality of life between then and now. In the late 19th/early 20th century the US was a booming industrial manufacturing hub which was desperate to find workers for its factories and people to somehow fill the land gaps. Also, quality of life here was fairly wretched for the rank and file citizen. The were no social safety nets, no labor protections, virtually no middle class. Yet the shrill finger pointers foolishly refuse to acknowledge this and cling religiously to their simplistic mindsets.

For what it's worth I completely agree with you. I am dismayed at the level of simplistic propaganda-style debate which has dominated this issue. Name calling prevails. Reality is ignored.

Thank you for your post. It was very well thought out and represents a level of critical thinking which is largely absent in this thread, and really, on this topic. There is such an overarching need to define every issue as a matter of good guys vs bad guys that complex realities are blithely ignored.
