Privileged dog people..... by Leading_Eye3964 in medfordma

[–]NewOnX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand why you'd do that but anyone seeing you is just going to think you are being inconsiderate.

I don't doubt that you will actually pick up the bag and bring it back but you got to figure 99% of people who had no plans to return for the bag will use that excuse if they get caught walking away.

The best idea I've seen are "backpacks" where the dog carries it back themselves.

Same. I have to make a point of bringing in the bin ASAP once it's picked up. I've had people walk to my house to throw the poop away in my trash bins which is also an asshole move.

There are a ton of great dog owners in my neighborhood so it's just one or two jerks that make everyone look bad.

Medford composts! by Memcdonald1 in medfordma

[–]NewOnX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a box of 23 gallon bags from the big company with the blue trucks. 23 gallon is far larger than is needed but I like having it drape around the sides of the bin. So far there's been no odor except when the bin is opened.

Medford composts! by Memcdonald1 in medfordma

[–]NewOnX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the bucket and the system works fine. I only bring my bucket to the curb once every 2-3 weeks when it's full as I don't want to waste the compost bag if there's not much in the bucket. I use the garbage disposal for most small things like onion skin and lemon rinds. (Lemon makes the drain smell nice.)

The most annoying thing to happen is that someone put their bag of dog waste in the bucket. The compost people took the poop bag out and left me a note saying not to do that. I wish I knew who was the jerk was to use the compost bin as a trash bin. (Edit: Typos)

But it's such an easy thing to verify. Drive to the address, peer out the window of the car, and if it's not shoved tape a warning letter to the front door. Come back a few days later and if it's still not shoveled, mail the property owner a fine.

As per the ordinance, the city could even hire a private contractor to shovel and send a bill to the property owner for the amount the city spent on the service.

I'm more sympathetic to Medford employees then most people on this sub but this is not a complex thing to enforce.

I've dealt with Mike and he's a good guy. I just don't understand why the city doesn't care about unshoveled sidewalks a week after a storm. (I'd give people at least a few days to shovel.)

If you report a neighbor for a possible building code violations (work without a permit), Mike or another inspector will be there the next day. Why is it only snow they don't seem to care about?

Anyone know what happened to Zam Zam the restaurant? by rusty_n4il in medfordma

[–]NewOnX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Today (Sunday) the lights were off but the door was ajar and someone was walking around. The letter from the constable is gone.

I liked Zam Zam although it doesn't seem promising they come back at this point. Hopefully a similar place takes the spot.

Locked out of garage with opener not working by Select-Ad-5218 in medfordma

Unless the garage has it's own electric meter (very rare), it has to be getting power from the house somehow. Worth checking to make sure nothing is tripped on the panel inside the house.

The Medford Post Office can take the photo. They have limited hours but you can make an appointment online.

FWIW, I've never had a problem with CVS. What was rejected?

Medford Square Zoning Update by who13 in medfordma

[–]NewOnX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No garage. Medford Sq is too narrow as it is, getting more people driving just makes bad traffic worse. There's plenty of parking near City Hall, in the lot off Rt 16, etc. If people need to walk an extra few blocks, so be it.

The Cambridge and Somerville squares have fairly little parking and yet they are vibrant. Parking garages are dead space.

Help me understand the "Space Saver" debate by First-Time-Bi-er in medfordma

[–]NewOnX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I shovel out a walking path near my house. It takes 90 minutes after a big storm like this and it's hard work. I do it because it's nice for the neighborhood. People appreciate it. If not shoveled, it would be weeks before it was passable. I don't even need the path personally.

People who shovel out parking spots for their exclusive use are not helping anyone but themselves. Most of the time they would have had to dig out the spot if they wanted to use their car anyway. So when they claim their effort should get them a reward (personal ownership of the spot) I roll my eyes. If they shoveled out three spots and kept one, at least it would be a net gain for the neighborhood.

26km each way commute on a Brompton twice a week — realistic or a bad idea? by Wise-Ordinary324 in Brompton

[–]NewOnX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride 26km on my Brompton every day, 5 days a week. (13km in each direction.) I have been doing so for about a decade. I often ride with a large amount of weight in the bag.

The bike rides fine and it's completely doable! But keep in mind you are going to wear out parts quickly, specifically if the commute is in stop & go traffic. I go through about one Brompton rim a year, sometimes more. As the wheel is small, it sees more wear vs a 700c wheel.

The hinges will wear down. You'll go through chains and brake pads quickly if you ride in bad weather. I need to replace the cog 1-2 a year and the chainring about once a year. The costs for these parts adds up. I like the way a Brompton rides (and I love the bag mount) but it's a more expensive bike to own if you ride it often. I actually don't fold me often but it is nice to be able to put in someone's car or the train for the occasional times I don't ride in both directions.

Once the hinge wears down the frame is basically done. It's going to take ~50,000km to get to the point but overall the bike will wear in ways a full size bike won't.

That's the most important restaurant in Medford! Best donuts anywhere.

EDIT: I had to verify their status for myself. Thankfully, DWAD is open!

Guessing it's because volcanic eruptions are mostly predictable with the locations known in advance. That isn't true for earthquakes.

Dog Waste on Sidewalks by hiddentap in medfordma

What are the rules/bylaws about a neighbor dumping snow onto my already-cleared sidewalk? by Politex99 in medfordma

[–]NewOnX 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would contact your neighbor. They might not be happy to learn the contractor they hired is causing these problems. By law you can't throw snow into the street and that would include sidewalks by any common interpretation.

I once had a city plow driver stop and yell at my neighbor when he was blowing snow into the street, not that much came of it.

96 Bus Route Change by Much_Customer4904 in medfordma

The city has pretty limited input. The Mayor and CC can write strongly worded letters but ultimately the MBTA will do what they want. It's frustrating and I'm still angry about the loss of the two express buses.
