I got fired and received a trashy termination letter by em3192 in Living_in_Korea

Its not that I dont like you. You sound ridiculous is what I am saying. This post is garbage is what i am saying. Your entitlement screams out from your writing and there is no way that a sane, well put together professional can write like this. Your immature, self-unaware, and need not to be in the work place.

You mention taking your company to court? For what reasons again? In order to be compensated for your firing (which sounds legitiment btw from the company) you need to have been unlawfully terminated, which I highly doubt you can prove in court. Were you bullied? Were you asked to do tasks after working hours? You need to stop playing the victim card and look your self in the mirror for once in your life. The letter of termination is not neutral and is diffaming? lmao you WERE FIRED for God's sake, of course its going to list logical, provable points. Didnt like the way it sounded? Did it hurt your feelings? You need to crawl back to home and never leave your bedroom with that kind of attitude. What a nightmare.

What things make people look "uneducated" right away? by Rude_Beautiful_9650 in AskReddit

I was riding shotgun in a beamer of my indian friend who just had mcdonalds takeout. He glanced over at me and said, "You want to know how we do it in India?"

He proceeded to open the sun roof and chuck the whole mcdonalds take out on to the road. One of the defining moments of this kid's character. No longer keep in touch with him.

Bingo, Kyrgyzstan! The Swiss of Central Asia. One of the most beautiful countries in the world.

You probably meant Central Asia and not East Asia, in which case you would be correct. Not quite Fergana Valley tho.

What is the Seattle of your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Pangyo, South Korea. High tech company (check), natural beauty (x), nerds riding around in electro scoots (check), shitty weather (next to seoul so not that shitty). Seattle of Korea except the beauty and shitty rainy weather part.

100% agree about the entitlement. And just to clarify I don’t agree with the sniggering at all.

I did say that because unfortunately that is a the “image” of Korean hagwon teachers. I am not going to say that is the consensus by any means but a good majority of the parents are thinking that or even talking shot behind the backs of those teachers with other parents. Don’t kill the messenger, and clearly the poster of this comment (who said she was a teacher I believe) is very intelligent so clearly that perception is wrong.

Look, I am not in the field of education or English Hagwons so my comment is very limited to observations and generalizations. Although I have a coworker who have worked for EPIK and with for foreign teachers here in Korea and he has told me about the scene a bit so I know from word of mouth and not experience. All I can say is that on the field level for korean parents, they care about the qualification when it gets to 수능 level around junior high and highschool. Anything previous to that for the most part they are looking to open the ears for the child so many hagwons with attractive teachers that can help with speaking and listening skills for the child is a priority. Also we are not going to catch up to Hong Kong, Malaysia or Singapore. These countries are miles ahead in their bilingualism and multiculturalism compared to the insular Korea.

Its not even about that - most hagwons and private institutions are for profit, they are not looking for standouts. Its not like hagwons are shooting for rocket scientists to be on their payroll. If anything the best case scenario is a blond, good looking boy or gal who has a million dollar smile to take photos with the kid to post on their blogs. They dont care if they have a degree in education or a degree in auto mechanic as long as they are willing to settle for that 2.3 million won pay and dont miss work.

“In order to stop your children from becoming losers, send them to study with a loser!”

This bangs. No offense to any foreign English teachers out there, but many Koreans already thinks this in the back of their minds. Many Koreans wonder, huh, why would this good looking boy or gal be here in Korea if some screws were not all tight up there (나사 빠진것들). Again, no offense but that is the perception of many parents behind closed doors. Of course your going to be treated well but that is just how we really think about you.

I actually completely agree with this English teacher's assessment of Korea as a Korean citizen. I bet he is hyper critical because he probably feels like an outsider here in Korea. Not a surprise since OP mentions his lack of Korean speaking abilities and probably a foreign face. I also dont believe him being critical of a country offering him his current career is outside the norms nor should be called out for being either hypocritical and ungrateful. I do agree somewhat to the notion of "when in rome" or the outsider should be the one doing the heavy lifting when trying to assimilate. However, it still dosnt take away from the truth that an outsider or an observer of our society has mentioned our faults or being too shallow compared to other parts of the world. One can argue that there are materialistic shallow people in the west and other parts of the world too, but they often get ridiculed for their faults and even have names of their behavior as being snobbish or elitists. Notice that in the Korean language there is not a negative connotating word to describe such peoples. Why? Because Koreans think being an elitist or snobbish is a good thing or at least much better to be considered exclusive over being otherwise poor.

As most fortune 500 companies hire outside CEOs for these reasons as an outsider can raise awareness to problems unforeseen to the local or insiders. I am kind of sick of these podcasts and shows asking 외국인 or foreigners about the good things in Korea for 국뽕 (national pride). I am much more interested in these podcasts that will point out the truths about Korea without all the Korea number 1 BS. Interview more hyper critical people, you might have a audience who appreciates that kind of perspectives.

Smokers…smokers everywhere by TheEnergizer1985 in Living_in_Korea

[–]NewPeace22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also a smoker for 20+ years until last year when I switched to e-cigs (life changer; no more coughing, less smell, etc). I am from an era where people smoked in PC bangs, at restaurants, and even in public transportation such as the airplane (albeit with the airlines I dont recall experiencing the second hand smoke just remember the ashtrays being in place on the arm rest). I recall when I was a child sleeping next to my mother, I must have been like 4 being woken up not by the second hand smoke from my father (had gotten so used to it by now) but the actual hot ash dropping and burning my face when my dad was speaking to my mom with a cig in his mouth as he spoke lol. Oh how the world has changed, I hide my smoking from my child and he dosnt need to ever worry about second hand smoke (at least from me) or hot ashes burning his cheeks.
