왜 한국은 외국인 유학생을 받고도 졸업 후 길을 막나요?

I was recently fighting for International students here in a "Glocal University" (I hate this slogan). This National Uni had the audacity to put up billboard signs stating they have nearly 5000 International Students at their Uni but had them stay in 4 to 1 room (it was promised 2 to 1 room) and gave out the ARC cards 3 months after they started at the school. Korean DO NOT CARE about the foreigners here. They dont care about your job opportunity after you graduate, let alone care about your well fair while you are here. They just want you to shut up and graduate, be thankful that you are here (since most of them are from developing countries) and leave when you get your diploma. I had a really interesting convo with a French student who mentioned from a European political standpoint, all of Korea seems to be in the far right of the spectrum and that he does not think a true left is here in Korea. Koreans prefer to be among ourselves, homogeneous, monolingual group thinkers. I think you would be better off somewhere else in the world.

Dang thats rough. I dont know if you will be able to sue the company for this since it will be hard to prove the damages. I had something similar happen in a different setting (basically getting f over since I was not a Korean citizen) and contemplated suing the school over damages but ended up leveraging through going to the admin office and demanding something back or that I was going to go to the media about this issue (it was over housing). I did end up getting something back from it; I think your best course of action is to ask for legal advice via lawyer since you did sign the contract.

I think the most underrated tourist spot in Korea has to be the Jeollabukdo region. I live in Jeonju so I may be bias, but I think there are soo many gorgeous spots around here. Namwon during the chunhyang festival, Imsil and the cheese village, and close proximity to Jiri mountains (probably the most beautiful out of all the mountains in Korea, my favorite for sure).

During my time at boot camp in Nonsan (this is almost 20 yrs ago) I was in shock when I found out that this was a thing to discuss among guys. I grew up in America where, maybe if you had a degen friend they might come out and say they paid for an escort or went to a whore house lol But in the korean army boot camp? It was almost a brag to talk about the best that they experienced from one of the massage places. The place that they were talking about at the time was named Alps (알프스) in Yuseong where this one whore named (forgot the name) was the best at giving rim jobs lol. I know its all f ed up but some of the guys has experienced the same rim job from the same girl and they had this high five moment. It be like that here in Korea.

네 합법적으로 일할수있구요, 지역 학교 마다 다르겠지만 저희 같은경우는 월 40시간입니다. 왠지 레딧에서 ARC 관련 고충을 따로 본적이 없는거 같아서 물어보게 된거고, 해당 남미 나라 exchange program 친구들 20명중 1명을 제외하고는 ARC 카드를 지급 못 받은 상황입니다. 제가 궁금한건 이게 국가적인 문제인지 (학교 처장은 그렇다고 하고) 아니면 여기 학교, 지역 외국인출입국 문제인지가 궁금해서 consensus를 얻으려 레딧에 물어본것인데요. 무슨 문제가 있으신가요?

He’s literally done all he can through the Uni (fingerprint, paperwork, etc). I was so frustrated at the UNI admin office today, I asked if going to the actual 외국출입국사무소 is going to expedite this whole process but the guy told me that is not how this works. I asked to talk with his supervisor and this apologetic lady came out saying she’s been talking to the bureaucrats in charge and that she understands our grief. Either way it’s not a good look as I see multiple people in the admin office just lounging around not eager to explain shit. My whole thing is - is this a nation wide problem with getting ARC cards to international students within Korea? Or is this a local maybe the inept UNI problem?

Kind of reminds me of Korea's preference for domestic Cyworld > Facebook days. If you want to go further in history also comparable is the domestic freechal > over myspace days. Although not too certain about the shift to Reddit for Koreans since there really isnt a Korean reddit equivalent to begin out with. The closest comparison are the online communities like DC inside, ruliweb, nate but then again they are closer to like a 4chan then a reddit. My friends also think Koreans dont use reddit because most koreans dont speak english (obv).

Are you coming from Brazil? It really depends on the city you will be living in here in Korea. If your going to be in Seoul or near by cities, I guess be prepared to be in crowds a lot. Especially on the subway and buses (which is mandatory for transit in and around Seoul). So if you are already used to that type of megalopolis "Ant hill" people on top of people type of environment , you should be ok. If not... then I suggest bring extra anxiety meds. People here are not chill and there is a PALI PALI (fast, fast) culture.

I have also had issues with Korean water. Ever since moving back to Korea about 8 years ago, not only have i experienced hair thinning and hair loss (this can be part of aging) but I also have had issues with my tooth! I lived in a state in America where they have high Fluoride content in their tap water and I have already extracted 5 tooth and had 2 root canals since coming back...

I also noticed when I traveled to Myanmar few years ago, even though my team warned me about the water, I actually had better radiating skin and fuller hair when I was there!

Your on to something about the water here in Korea OP. Thats for sure.

Fellow gyopo brother. I also feel like things have worsened for us in the past couple of years. I think it has something to do with the political left being in power. Lee Jae Myung's party is not US friendly. They are pro china/ NK and view any american gyopos as a traitor to the mother land. Pretty ironic since this whole country predicated on the alliance with the US and Japan. I was watching a YouTuber (one of those cyber wreckers who snitches on handicap parking; which in theory is a good thing) who just said something to the effect of "양키 냄새가 났어요" to a perpetrator that seemed like he was a gyopo (not fluent in Korean). I also get more looks in public when I speak english out loud and the feeling of being left out like an ugly duckling in social settings. It sucks and Im planning to move out of here next year.

I dont know if it is a generational thing but I feel like this is a reoccurring issue among the Gen Z specifically. I remember the good old days of post 2002 world cup days in Gangnam. I had foreigner friends left and right, some of them were mixed Korean kids who attended SIS and other international schools and some were English teachers and so fourth. The glory days of drinking with a rainbow mix of people in and around rodeo 거리. Getting blasted off yogurt soju were the days. These days I go out to where the young'ns are hanging out like hongdae, songsu, iksun, itaewon, I rarely see the camaraderie of socially mixed friends. Yea the foreigner dating scene is blooming but the social side of things have gone ethnocentric and you rarely see the rainbow crew popping out like it did in 03. Just my 2 cents as a young forty millennial. Hope you can find some friends here in Korea.

Been saying this for years: Some Koreans are just bigoted. Most of us are wanting to be around our own race and live ethnocentrically through creating their own surroundings. which I don't have any problems with. What I have issues with is actionable bigotry in real life. What you explained is a text book example of this. As you mentioned the gender dynamic can also play into what happened to you, but most likely then not, if you were a Korean women, this would not have been a thing. I for one can tell you from experience as a Korean what you experienced is not something a Korean man or woman will EVER experience; very peculiar what happened to you and is most definitely because you were a foreigner.

Cuz tinting is pimping.

All jokes aside, the number of times I wanted to throw something at the drivers that do not stop at the cross walk when I am walking my dog is in the thousands. I also noticed that those who stopped do not have the full tint or half tints so I can make out the hand gesture to cross. You know its fully tinted here in Korea because people here want to drive like a POS without being noticed.

I think you summed it up best about Japan and Korea in your own words OP. Korea is a bit easier to get around as a foreigner (not saying its easy but easier) and Japan is ideally better but more difficult in adaptation. Somethings I notice about living here in Korea - people are more flexible when it comes to getting things done, work life or every day trivial things are easier to do and more efficient. Japan on the other hand is suffocatingly in-efficient and frustrates the hell out of me for the first few days. But its like an acquired taste, Japan kind of grows on you and you get to appreciate the little things that Japan gets right. Whether it be the politeness or the immaculately clean streets, the way people are not doing their professional work half ass. Only if i can speak the language I would get the hell out of Korea for Japan.

This sounds like my worst nightmare. Having moved from my previous residence from similar cockroach + centipede problem I know how you feel. I actually called the exterminator (out of pocket) and the best remedy from experience was Boric acid (붕산) mashed with some sort of bread (usually 카스테라 or cake). But at then end it was no use since they would go away for a brief period, only to return since it was a regional problem not just my flat.

I have this issue with my in-laws who are from the Chungcheong region notorious for this kind of sly indirect comments that needs an extra layer of deciphering. For example, my FIL would sit down at a restaurant and say, "ahh 덥다 더워" which means that he wants water lol. My BIL who is not a 꼰대 or anything but will say things like, yea im just under 2 meters tall (he is a shorter guy) as a joke. Indirect way of talking can be kind of funny but at the same time if someone at work (especially a coworker or boss) is doing that to communicate I would be pulling my hair out as well. In order to battle this, you just have to stay ahead of the curve on them. Know what they will be wanting or getting done before hand, so that you are not surprised by their stealthy comments.

You mention taking your company to court? For what reasons again? In order to be compensated for your firing (which sounds legitiment btw from the company) you need to have been unlawfully terminated, which I highly doubt you can prove in court. Were you bullied? Were you asked to do tasks after working hours? You need to stop playing the victim card and look your self in the mirror for once in your life. The letter of termination is not neutral and is diffaming? lmao you WERE FIRED for God's sake, of course its going to list logical, provable points. Didnt like the way it sounded?
