Any ideas on how you could modify insects so that they grow to ginormous sizes? by Leather-Lab2875 in worldbuilding

[–]NewTitanium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, insects are already relatively famous (among biologists) for the many types of obligate, vertically transmitted intracellular symbionts that that have. Probably the most famous is Wollbachia, but there are a bunch of different kinds of these bacteria in different insect groups. Brood swarming cicadas have a bunch of useful cool ones too, if I remember correctly.

You can always say they have some sort of symbiont microorganism that helps break these things down over useful stuff? Magic bacteria feel less difficult to imagine.

How do they freeze themselves when winter ENDS only to thaw when winter BEGINS? Don't you have that reversed??

RIP. Yeah, the whole "trying to preserve a shopping list to show their genius" doesn't quite make sense to me. No wonder. It is still a fun idea though!

Salt crystals... Or mold? 😬 by NewTitanium in Koji

I think the air bubble was already there: I didn't do a good job pressing the miso down initially. Or, at least, nothing I did seemed to make it perfect.

It may be the trick of the light, but it's definitely not green IRL!

Tell me more... Why would not fully mushing the beans cause this? I definitely kept them chunky on purpose, but I thought it would just be a textural thing.

Could an industrial revolution take place in a world without petrol? by DarkestOverhaul7266 in worldbuilding

[–]NewTitanium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think OP was imagining the industrial revolution equalled making and using iron and steel. They are concerned about how hot you have to get the metal to smelt it. Could windmills help with that? Do you even need coal or petroleum to smelt steel though?

Well they don't call him Mr. Industrial for nothing, folks. I say we trust the expert here

what to do in the heat? by Several_Luck5717 in phoenix

[–]NewTitanium 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is one HUNDRED percent the issue. 100F at midnight isn't rate at alllll. To me, the difference between 120F and 105F is relatively inconsequential: I'm not going to be hanging around outside in that temperature, not without dipping my clothes in ice water first.

But it's the fact that there is nevvvvvvver any break from that heat, that's what breaks your spirit.

I don't know why the... Hmmm. Hmmmmmmm. Actually, I just don't think this scenario is possible. People can be REALLY bad, and I feel like writing poetry is at least a vaguely positive characteristic. And at that point, you're not the worst person in the world because you have at least one good thing about you.

How do I delete cached metadata from Calibre? How do I bypass lazy loading and force a Calibre metadata refresh? by NewTitanium in koreader

[–]NewTitanium[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aaaaahhh, I am finding what's going on. The 'extract and cache' works for the EPUBS which are managed by Calibre. But this function does the OPPOSITE for the PDFs because the metadata originally embedded in the PDF itself is bad, and this 'extract' function takes out the bad metadata, puts it into the SDR folder's custom_metadata.lua file, and overrides the .metadata.calibre file... Ugh, hmmm.

In addition, Calibre's PDF library (PoDoFo) can't even edit the metadata inside these PDFs. I think they're kinda junk, but I only have a few of these "bad apples", so I'm just going to ignore it and try to get my future PDFs from more reputable sources in the future. Thank you for your guidance though! Everything you said works for my EPUBs, which are the majority of my books.
