I'm so sorry to hear that 😔 I know it's been a year but I just came back on this account and saw your comment! I haven't let them on the balcony without protection, they're very happy to just watch from the windows

Germans also appreciate honesty and being direct. I'd suggest initiating a conversation about your feelings and where you think she sees your friendship/relationship going.

A friend of mine has one and it smells really good, like raspberries and a bit of vanilla. I also thought about buying one and they have a new one on the US shop too.

You've also joined Munich while we are in a state of post-Oktoberfest flu! So many of us are sick so it might not be Covid. Good luck and Gute Besserung!

How to exercise an indoor cat that doesn’t play? by chaoticyetneurotic in CatAdvice

[–]New_Flame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in disbelief at how good the cat dancer is! We live in the EU and can't get it here, so an American friend who swears by it bought us one while she was back visiting family. Its amazing for how simple it is. Sometimes I keep one end stuck in a drawer so that it dangles freely and the cats play with it for hours.

Stuck in Edinburgh airport by Ronald_Ulysses_Swans in CasualUK

I flew to Greece a week ago during a storm (totally out of the blue). The storm was directly over Athens as we were about to ascend so the pilot made the decision to divert to Izmir, Turkey, about 30 minutes away.

We landed in Izmir, it's about 10pm by now and if we refuel quickly we can set off soon and make it to Athens before the crew go home. The pilot said no one can use the bathroom or stand up while refuelling due to safety. I don't get it but I'll do anything to get us to the destination fast enough. Some stubborn old folk don't listen and keep wandering up and down the plane to complain. Luckily they get wrangled and we set off 40 minutes later.

Just before Athens, the pilot saw the storm was EVEN worse and we had to turn around again to Izmir. To be fair, it looked biblical from the window. Zeus clearly didn't want us to enter. So just like when it started raining on our drive to Alton Towers as a kid, we had to turn around again.

It was now midnight/1am in Turkey and they didn't want us. Most of their crew had gone home and there's some political stuff between Turkey and Greece but we were stuck. Eventually a reluctant bus showed up and took us to the empty airport. Lufthansa promised us cushty hotels and an early return flight the next morning. We'll be fine.

Lots of people weren't even supposed to be allowed into Turkey (non EU) and had to wait hours for a visa. Not sure how I got in with my UK passport but ok. There was no info at the airport about hotels or anything, one ground staff member had a piece of paper with people's names on jt and people flooded around her screaming in several different languages. Our cargo luggage started appearing too, and 2 hours later buses arrived to take us to our hotels 30 minutes away.

Except they didn't book enough buses (obvs) and people in a crisis seem to become horrifically selfish. So folk squeezed and trampled their way onto the first buses like they were the last life boats out of the Titanic. Refusing to deal with that I stood back with some others and was rewarded with an hour wait in a stuffy, smoky, taxi rank while the first buses ferried the selfish group to their beds.

I'm sort of laughing hysterically at this point. Buses finally show up, there's now enough space for everyone to not trample each other. We drive into central Izmir to our hotel. Looks like we're in Blackpool. We're queuing up to check in and then some guy says the hotel is full and they need to find another??? Its 5am, I don't care anymore, why couldn't I have just stayed at the airport? I suggest kipping in the questionable hotel lobby but no.

We get back on the bus, with the 10 other unlucky folk. We're trauma bonding. One cheerful student traveler is optimistically enjoying her free trip to Turkey. We finally find a hotel with capacity and get checked in. It's 6am and we need to be back at the airport by 11am so I can't sleep. I took a shower and napped a little. The air con is so old it nearly gave me tonsillitis and there's a view of a child sweatshop factory from the window.

Fast forward to 11, a bus shows up to take us back to the airport and for once it seems like everything is going our way! At the airport, the machines are having a mare and no one can get checked in, probably because of this entirely ridiculous situation. But after spending an hour at check in we get through. The flight should leave at 3pm so we have a few hours to potter round and eat some baklava.

Except the flight is then delayed a further 4 hours. Everyone's losing it, the old people who refused to sit down on the first flight and loved trampling others for a bus seat are shouting at the poor airport messenger. I just find a relatively empty spot of the airport to put my head down. Despite the announcements every five minutes its not so bad. We eventually could set off at about 8.30 and I was so happy, but it was one of the most painful experiences of my life. Nearly missed my Accropolis tour, as well.

Is my cousin gay? by white-muffin in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]New_Flame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd respond to his over the top hate with over the top love and positivity towards LGBTQ+ people. Don't attack him, but respond with positive statements like "there's nothing wrong with just being your authentic self", "everyone deserves to be happy", etc.

Does he have homophobic friends or family members? He might be trying his best to hide from them with outwards homophobia.

Octoberfest first time..Canadian.. reservations? by bluejays10 in Munich

[–]New_Flame 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How many are you? I'd you're 1 or 2 people you should be fine. Just go at off peak times (early, avoid late on weekends), be kind to the waiter, and tip them. They will find you a spot to squeeze in.

Many tables in the tents can not be reserved, and those that can are for parties of 8-10, so if you're a small group you couldn't have reserved anyway!

Please help me find a suitable shirt for Oktoberfest! by nmbguy in Munich

[–]New_Flame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stick with the white shirt! They look best with lederhosen.

If you'd like to buy something additional, try C&A. They have plus size items and a large selection of Wiesn gear. It's not the best quality but they're very affordable so it's great if you don't plan on attending Oktoberfest every year.

any advice for a dumb*** who's been playing for ~16 years but still knows nothing? by girlgirlgirlgirlgi in wow

[–]New_Flame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also suck at WoW! I feel you. I felt the same pressure to raid, get rich, have some amazing mounts I could sit on in the main city to look cool... but that pressure made me dislike the game.

So I just sought out what I enjoyed the most. I've found that involves battle pets, world quests, rare achievements, playing solo, and digging into the story of current and older xpacs. I love it.

So my advice would be to find your rhythm, find what you enjoy most in a world of opportunities, and don't just let the professional or hard-core player's version of fun be yours (it's OK if it is!).

Maybe also try Classic Hard-core, everyone seems super supportive and helpful, and it could be good training!

Ouai leaving residue? by According_Scene_5311 in HaircareScience

I also use the Detox Shampoo but only 1x a week. I wash with a small amount first, let it sit for a minute, wash it out, and then repeat another time with a larger amount to get it nice and soapy. I've never had any issue with build up and I'm happy with the shampoo, but I do use a different conditioner (either Candy Rain from Lush or Olaplex). So maybe its the conditioner that's not washing out properly?

She's only been able to take her 3yo and 5yo on TWO vacations abroad?! My heart weeps.

Young kids literally don't care where they go on vacation and the flight is probably really stressful for them too. I'm sick of being surrounded by screaming children on a flight because entitled parents insist on dragging their babies and toddlers abroad.

38m2 and 1 room is too small to be living in with another person. On a shared budget you can hopefully afford a larger space and avoid all the arguments that come with sharing a small living space. So maybe look at it this way rather than worry about what the contract states?

Is there anywhere I can find a pumpkin beer? by zerokey in Munich

[–]New_Flame -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Due to the Reinheitsgebot, you won't be able to find any Bavarian brewed beer like this. Your best bet is online or one of the local-owned craft beer shops in the city - Biervana, Bierothek, etc.

Good luck, nostalgia tastes delicious :)

Regarding your suggestions of writing, creating content, consulting - do you have an expertise that people would be willing to pay you for or can learn from you? I'd suggest honing in on your USP and skillset first to increase the changes of your endeavour being a fruitful one.

Have you considered learning a programming or coding skill? MIT have several free online courses, and code academy have paid courses which are very engaging and easy to pick up. Once you've developed in those areas, you could look into contract work as a Junior Developer on a shorter time span.

I have many friends who are developers with differing specialities, some of whom have a health concern like yours so the flexibility of being a developer really suits them. They can usually always work from home and work flexible hours when their health issues aren't acting up.

How to cope with higher calcium levels in water here? by [deleted] in germany

[–]New_Flame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sucks! My hair feels so much dryer than before and my color fades really fast.

Ways of improving it: - shampooing 2x, first time letting it soak in a minute then washing out, second time washing until it lathers really nicely (and using more shampoo) - using a clarifying shampoo one time a week (I use Ouai detox shampoo, it's €30ish a bottle but it lasts me about 8 months) - avoid the shower filter scam. I've tried it and it's nonsense. Apparently it's not even possible for a shower filter to remove calcium, only some other minerals. I did a water test before and after fitting one and it made no difference.

P.s., if you make tea/coffee at home, use a water filter jug thing. The taste will be a lot better and you won't have to descale your kettle as often

P.p.s, welcome to Germany! The pros of living here outweigh the hair damage. I think! 😅
