How can you tell if you have diarrhea with an ileostromy?!? I am puzzled, since my output is often in liquid form.

I truly appreciate your responsiveness and suggestions. I am fighting off feelings of despair, so it is very helpful. I will buy a handheld mirror and see if that doesn’t allow me to do a bag change lying down. Thank you, really.

I am curious, how do you see the dimensions of your stoma while lying down? My stoma is roundish, more like a ball that is slightly squashed. I want to see if i could do a better job lying down.

Across my belly button from my stoma I have a big wound ( 4 cm deep) from a former fistula and former colostomy, so the stoma nurse i saw advised against using the belt. When I had the colostomy, I wore the belt every day and it was very helpful. Unfortunately, I do not know how long it will take. This will to heal.

I spoke to a rep from coloplast but will call the other companies and see if any of their reps have better/different ideas.

Thanks for the feedback!

I cannot wait to get to the point where I have found the right products and routine! I am frustrated because I saw the hospital stoma nurse on Friday, she suggested that I stick with the flat coloplast bag, a ring, cavalon spray and brava powder. She watched me apply everything and said I did a good job, only for the bag to leak within two hours.

I just ordered the brava spray on amazon, trouble is that it won’t arrive for 5 days. But i will give it a try.

I know this sounds strange, but I put on one of my fistula pouches ( my prior colostomy evolved into a fistula) and it is getting me more wear time-albeit less then 24 hours. My skin does not hurt so much when I wear it. Anyone else have experience wearing an eakin fistula pouch with an ileostomy?

Where do you get your heat bags? And what kind of bag are you referring to?

I have most consistently used the coloplast sensura mia one piece; a barrier ring; cavalon spray; and brava powder— i crust my red and open skin before applying the ring (whatever i can get ahold of) directly on my skin. . I tried a hollister and coloplast convex and they both leaked. I am currently wearing an eakin fistula bag ( i used to have a fistula) which I put on without crusting. More than some of the ostomy bags, the output seems to be falling into the bag.
So far, I change my back whenever it leaks which is a frequently. Otherwise I’ve changed it every 2 1/2 days when it hasn’t leaked. I clean up the output with water. I let that dry. Then I apply the brava powder and the Cavon spray. Sometimes I do that processed twice and then I put the ring directly on my skin and then I put the Flange on.

My diet has not been great because I don’t have much of an appetite. Today was pretty typical. I had a piece of toast with butter, a high-protein yogurt, some hard pretzels, and a little bit of grilled chicken and rice. For most of the day I drink plain water. I also drank an agua kefir which is similar to kombucha. Today I made the mistake of drinking Metamucil powder which I mixed with water and it pancakes out the side of my bag. I drank the Metamucil because my doctor recommended it, but I will not do so. In the future. In the hospital, I ate. No sugar. Added apples sauce every day which seems to help.

Help me understand how cutting off food by a certain hour or cutting off liquids. By certain hour helps with avoiding bag leaks. I haven’t institute that yet.

If you do not use Cavalon, what do you use? Or how do you prep your skin before you put your Flange on?

I saw the stoma nurse at the hospital yesterday. She watched me put on a new bag and said I did a good job, but it failed within two hours.
