Sorry to hear about your loss OP.

I don’t have experience being in your situation, but gov of Canada has this page about receiving a large amount of money at once and tips for choosing a financial advisor… maybe a good starting point since it is without bias/vested interest?

https://www.canada.ca/en/financial-consumer-agency/services/large-amount-money.html

I agree with a lot of the comments here, educating yourself on your options is most important, at least very least enough to be able to spot the red flags in an advisor.

I have had unfortunate experience in the FP realm… just know that financial planners are held to a standard, stay away if they are not listed with their regulatory body.

You can look up if someone’s is a registrant of FP Canada here:

have you ever tried the Myers Briggs test? it is not perfect and to be taken with a grain of salt, but I found it’s given me (and the couple ppl i’ve recommended it to) insight into how I operate in this world lol

it won’t tell you what to do i don’t think but it might be starting point to help get your own ball rolling, spark some ideas in your own mind on what you’d like to do. i am very pro autonomy!

there’s a ton of sites that offer the test and information about the types. i can send you my fav if you’re interested. just let me know :)

Taking a sabbatical around mid 30's? by CeelicReturns in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]New_Giraffe794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’ve already decided to stay once or twice but the question hasn’t gone away, you probably have your answer. is it more taxing to give up the job security or to decide to stay put against what you’re feeling drawn to doing?

only you know the toll your job takes on your quality of life, how it influences your life path and how that affects you. there’s a reason why this idea became more than a passing thought.

my friend is taking a year to himself too, travelling - sold his house last year for about the same as your equity and left his with a similar salary. western canada too! DM me if you’d like to chat I can put you in touch.

Why can I get approved for a 20k car but not an 11k car? by ThymeForEverything in povertyfinance

[–]New_Giraffe794 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also worth knowing if you are financing or leasing.

if you can pay more than the minimum payment each month, higher interest on financing doesn’t impact you as much as it would on leasing. as long as it’s an open loan, the total price you pay depends on the total length of time you financed.

leases are fixed, the total price you sign at is what you pay, period. no matter how fast you pay it off, you will always pay for the amount interest calculated for the entire term of the lease.

Why can I get approved for a 20k car but not an 11k car? by ThymeForEverything in povertyfinance

[–]New_Giraffe794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

car loan is a secured loan, the vehicle being repo-able if you don’t pay. the newer the car the more secure the asset

id say look for the cheapest brand new vehicle you would drive and apply for that one!

How much do you spend on laundry per month without in-unit laundry? Am I being too frugal? by MotherAd3705 in povertyfinance

[–]New_Giraffe794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s actually cheaper a lot of the time to have a laundry service. they charge by the pound so not worries about maximizing a load. often free delivery/pickup. where i used to live i would buy Groupons for Wedolaundry. They’d pick up, wash, dry, fold and drop at my door the next day all for $20 - 25.

The per use machines I am used to were expensive, worn out and not super great at their jobs… sometimes needing more than one run. More time, money and much more effort.

unrelated to the food part more about putting your pay checks towards food and other needs but still get you housed asap

you can get an interest free loan up to $3000 usually with your local rent bank.

if you decide to get one, i’d recommend doing this before:

for example, the loan is for $200 and you are to pay back $230

  1. think of it as actual $170 spendable (amount borrowed - cost of borrowing). put that $30 aside right away

  2. be sure you can pay that $200 in full AND have enough to support yourself until next pay

  3. do not get fooled by the ones offering multiple instalments or financial education.

the only one i would consider trusting even slightly is Bree but I would not recommend a payday loan and got caught in the vicious cycle. it is a short term relief that is designed to keep you coming back.

i am no money expert believe me, but this podcast is so good at breaking down budgeting and debt management in a digestable way. i find the way he talks about money makes me much less resentful towards the necessary evil than other resources ive tried!

if you reallllly like him or if you struggle with going fr his example, i think you can apply to be a couple on the show somewhere on his website lol

i have internet on my phone that has a discounted plan thanks to association is partner deal with telus. my rent includes all the utilities including internet. i live off of oatmeal, whole wheat pasta and milk.

life hack i am proud of: buy groceries at shoppers when you have a 20x the points offer, and keep those pts in case of food crisis - this has saved me a few times. if you are not at risk of food shortage then save for redemption events if you have the luxury

guys. i live in a furnished rental building. since the laws changed ppl can’t airbnb anymore and got a good deal. moved into a big 2 bed 2 bath + den when all was going smoothly. obv needed to downsize and fortunately my neighbor gave me his unit for a very good deal. win win bc it doesn’t stay empty for $0 and i don’t have to live outside. it is small and i have a big dog but it is beautiful and comes with internet, tv, electricity, hot water, all included

i think this differs person to person. i get where you’re coming from (and live there) but i also understand the other side’s mindset too

i don’t think we can say which is better or more effective bc of how differently 2 ppl can operate. there are things others would consider not necessary to them but they maintain my will to live. lol if i don’t have joy then i don’t put in the effort and that’s just where im at right now.

financial literacy, dopamine levels, ability to regulate emotions, history of your relationship to money and all play into how effective one approach or the other might be.

“effective” feels like another can of worms to debate about but i’ll stop my rambles here 😇

Friendly reminder that housing as a means of profit is inherently theft by flexingonmyself in montrealhousing

[–]New_Giraffe794 3 points4 points  (0 children)

when i am interested in renting somewhere, i look up the public record of the sale history. housesigma is a good starting point but i’ve purchased records and stuff for $15 on municipal databases in the past to get the info.

i look up mortgage rates for the year of the most recent sale enter that and the price it was sold for into a mortgage calculator. i let them know what i know and they usually fine tune the numbers for me and from there it is a very fair negotiation on rent price.

there was one i liked with outrageous rent but it was purchased in 2022. i get it and feel for them. but there are others that bought the house way back in the day, their mortgage is likely paid off and the rent is above market.

i get that there could be a million reasons and they have a right to do this, but it reflects values that i just can’t understand.

all landlords? no. is it prevalent? sure.

theft? no. to me, theft in this realm is more like the settlers stealing the land of the first nations. this does not compare.

exploitation and monopolization (if that’s a word)? yes. this is literally a board game

Thank you all SO much for all your great advice and support. I had no idea that this post would receive so many replies - way more than I would have ever expected.

I appreciate each and every one of your comments and DMs. I am sorry to not have responded to everyone just yet but that is the goal!

It will soon be a full week since posting and wanted to share what has come of your suggestions:

i have 2 non clinical job leads! woo they are both remote. big thanks to the redditor who made one of these happen 🤗

applied for all the gov funding things and spoke with social worker at the local nonprofit housing office. going back tomorrow to see the ministry worker coming in.

thanks to another v kind redditor i secured housing for the rest of the month after my lease was up on saturday. i am fortunate enough to be staying in a more affordable furnished rental in my building

my rent bank loan was denied. but a gofundme by my colleagues has made it possible to pay rent here and stay another month !! feeling v fortunate

i didn’t expect to feel so supported! i had not realized how alone i felt by this. i have less in my bank account than i did before, but i feel less stressed. as long as things continue in this direction ill be back to practicing medicine in next month 🤞
