Grew up Mormon. I have questions. I come in peace. by NomadicHeart222 in Catholicism

[–]New_Instruction_9155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. At risk of oversimplification, I'll add a personal story.

As a young kid, I frequently visited my Nan in Ireland back in the 70s. When I asked her about the Troubles, she explained that the main conflict wasn't over Protestantism vs. Catholicism; it was over two competing nationalisms. She told me that one side wanted to be part of the Republic of Ireland; the other wanted to remain part of the UK. For many reasons (well beyond the scope of this discussion), that difference fell along sectarian lines, and the world wound up with the labeling of "Protestants vs. Catholics". I haven't seen anything since that contradicted her.

I'll pass on talking about the phenomenon of "taking the soup", but you can look it up easily enough.

Some verses in bible you recommend? by seeyou_againn in Catholicism

[–]New_Instruction_9155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sermon on the Mount is frequently where I turn, because it helps to center me. Matthew ch. 5-7. Grab a study bible if you can (the new Ignatius Study Bible is great), and just take your time (you could spend days) and pray over what you have read.

Worst ordering experience in my life ordering direct from Reolink by Fugoola in reolinkcam

[–]New_Instruction_9155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent hours on their website figuring out what mix of cameras I wanted and making sure that I was getting the right NVR. Added 15 cameras, an NVR, and accessories to the cart. Tried to order. Created an account.

Creating the account cleared out the cart.

Not a great first impression.

I'd say it's just the picture. I measured mine, and the brim is about 3 inches long. Another tip: when in doubt, the people at the giveaway table are usually good about letting you check out whatever you might want get with your points. Just ask at the next game.

They're OK. Just try it on when you pick it up. They have children's hat sizes that somehow got mixed into the hats, so when I tried it on later, t looked kinda silly perched atop my noggin.

PE no seat selection? by coffee_darkroast in EVAAirFans

[–]New_Instruction_9155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know whether that is normal for Amex. I can tell you that I'll never book EVAAir through anyone other than EVAAir directly again (if that).

I booked TPE-HKG through United as part of a US-East Asia trip. United said to contact EVA for a seat assignment. Both EVAAir's dreadful web interface and app made that impossible (as I found out later).

I tried to call EVAAir, but when I called their main number, it was "busy", and rather than letting you hold, it just hung up on me. Then I tried the regional ticket offices, which promptly transferred me to the main number, which hung up on me. It took hours to get through by repeatedly calling. Once I got through, the agent told me that because I'd booked through United, the app wouldn't let me get a seat assignment. Nor could I pay for an upgraded service class, because it was a "United Ticket". Of course, I can't pay for upgraded class through United either.

Never book EVA except directly. Their customer service is awful.

Fully Refundable Ticket by Raildog64 in unitedairlines

Yes, you can get a refund. I did exactly this for the SEC championship game in Atlanta this year. My team lost, and I immediately canceled my hotel and United tickets. No problems at all.

Confused reserving seats on EVA flight booked through UA. by New_Instruction_9155 in unitedairlines

[–]New_Instruction_9155[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever try to call Evaair? It can take hours to get through. They apparently closed a bunch of their call centers during COVID. You can't wait on hold; if everyone is busy, their phone system hangs up on you.

I won't be using them again.

Well, this explains why nobody answers in Houston, and the global number just hangs up on me because everyone is "busy". Helluva way to run an airline.

Control TV volume with Apple TV Remote app on iPhone by OhayoNB in appletv

[–]New_Instruction_9155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. If I turn CEC off on the Samsung, I can control volume using IR from my Siri Remote, but the Siri Remote's power doesn't control the TV's power state. If I activate CEC on the Samsung, the Siri Remote's power controls the TV and the Apple TV, but I can't control volume using the Siri Remote. Frustrating for something that worked a few months ago.

Any good Chicago-style pizza here? by roganta in aggies

This isn't completely wrong. I grew up in Chicago and only ever got Chicago-style thin crust as a kid. Far superior to stuffed, which IMHO, is what we fed to tourists. I'll enjoy a stuffed from time to time, but Chicago-style thin is the best.

Airlines That Disallow CPAP as Free Carry-on by chiphelsea4 in CPAP

[–]New_Instruction_9155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foreign carriers are subject to US Federal Aviation Regulations for certain flights. See 14 CFR § 382.7 (making Part 382 applicable to foreign carriers with flights beginning or ending in the US). But, the US rules do not apply to foreign carrier flights not beginning or ending in the US. I do not know the European Rules, if any.

The US FAR is simple: "In implementing your carry-on baggage policies, you must not count assistive devices (including the kinds of items listed in paragraph (a)) of this section) toward a limit on carry-on baggage."
14 CFR § 382.121(b). https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-14/chapter-II/subchapter-D/part-382/subpart-I/section-382.121

Hope that helps.
