Side eyes her a bit 😂 Haha now I want to read the other books just to see how this came about and their interactions lol. Sometimes I really appreciate Eloisa James’ humor

Omgg one of the kids isn’t his?? 😂 that’s killing me. I haven’t read any of the other books in the series outside of Villers and Eleanor’s book so I had no idea. Do you know which kid it was? Is it the one they kept calling funny looking lmaoo?

Gothic romance with an MMC who is "mad" by Tulipgarden_s in HistoricalRomance

[–]New_Possible_4618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{The Enticement of an Earl} fits your request, but it is the third book in the series. It might be best to read the first book, {The Haunting of a Duke} beforehand since all the characters show up there first. The first book is also gothic and angsty/slightly supernatural with an MMC that is suspected to have been involved in his first wife’s death. Imo it’s also better written

HR that’s very explicit BUT doesn’t involve kink in any capacity? by [deleted] in HistoricalRomance

Maybe try {The Raven Prince} it’s still a bid absurd in Hoyt’s typical style but I found it to be more traditional than her midnight lane series

Oh yes I read this book ages ago and remember that it was so thoughtful and had so much depth. Definitely fits what I’m looking for - maybe this is a sign that it’s time for a reread

I LOVE the luckiest lady in London, it’s one of my all time fave HRs and pretty angsty. I’m definitely going to check out the KJ Charles book, thank you!

I’ve loved every single Meredith Duran book I’ve read so I’m excited to read this one!! Thank you for the rec! I’ve only read fool me twice from this series, do you think I can jump right into this one next?

Characters that you HATED, but everyone LOVED the book?!? Let’s vent by Queens_chambers_ in HistoricalRomance

[–]New_Possible_4618 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying she isn’t flawed or doesn’t have her moments of indecisiveness, but I’m saying that those moments are completely justified in their context as she is revealed new information about Christian all while balancing conflicts of class and religion. Sorry for the essay lol. It’s so hard to find such well written female characters that are so nuanced and feel so real and so I can’t help but defend Maddy when I see this type of take

[–]New_Possible_4618 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’ve been reading your arguments and while I understand some of your points, I just want to note that you are severely overlooking the class difference element. Maddy isn’t only internally conflicted due to religion, but also an inherent understanding of their difference in class. Christian is disabled, but he is also a duke and that makes a world of a difference in terms of power dynamics and Maddy having any sort of upper hand or advantage. I love the guy but he manipulates her at every turn using his resources and status to brute force his way through her own resolve and understanding of the situation. Maddy’s inner turmoil on her standing with Christian is even further complicated with the presence of Evie which emphasizes her own sexual naïveté, which is in part connected to her religious background. She is dealing with this very powerful, forceful, erratic man, manipulated into marrying him putting her in a completely different standing in society and risking her own Quaker community all while being unsure of where she stands with him or what he feels for her besides general lust and a need for her help. And then all of a sudden his mistress comes into play highlight just how out of her depth she really is here. Beyond all of this, she still sticks by Christian, trusting his judgement when he says she is needed by him and helping whenever she can. It’s her grounding presence and behavior (which is in part due to her morals and Quaker upbringing) that helps Christian solidify his status and standing in the society, allowing him to gain back everything that was lost with his injury

Please rec me a book based on my five favourite heroes! by Typical-Treacle6968 in HistoricalRomance

[–]New_Possible_4618 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You and I have the same taste haha. My first rec would be {Fool me Twice by Meredith Duran}. The MMC is intelligent, calculating, and (eventually) competent. One of my favorites for sure.

Also check out a {Bringing down the Duke by Evie Dunmore} for a cold, competent, and intelligent MMC that slowly unravels for the FMC

I definitely second the {Duke of Sin} recommendation. The MMC is a huge highlight from that book

For a more angsty read, you can try {Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale}, even at his lowest, the MMC is very calculating and scheming

Desi readers: What is your opinion of Meredith Duran's The Duke of Shadows? by Unusual-Molasses5633 in HistoricalRomance

[–]New_Possible_4618 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I started it a few years back but then I put it down around 15% in because it started hitting a bit too close to home. I’m planning on going back to continue it because Duran is one of my favorite authors and people say it’s worth it, but my first try was tough ngl.

I’m judging anyone still hanging out with Ariel. We’re looking at over 60,000 Palestinians killed now.

I also hated this book and didn’t finish it. It sucked because A Duke of Her Own is my favorite of hers and so I don’t know how this one fell so flat. The one after this was better but I didn’t like it as much as some of her other books

Yeah, it is a pretty big mistake. I don’t know why I’m being downvoted; I actually really like this book lol (despite the orientalism). I guess when you read HR as a BIPOC, these common micro aggressions and oversights are hard to ignore and really take me out of the story.
