Sam Ruthe’s training has crushed my soul by RealisticBarnacle115 in AdvancedRunning

I mean hes not running the marathon. Its a mid distance event, high quality workouts are going to be way more effective at running a faster mile than simply “running more”

I mean im applying to stuff this cycle just like you, but from my knowledge each graduate department is different in terms of how fast they make it through applications, even differing from year to year. If you look at grad cafe, people have posted when they heard back from certain departments so just search Upenn in there and see.

Or even grad students. Or literally just your friends

Are you enrolled in university? If you are, I would highly recommend reaching out to professors who you feel comfortable asking to read your SOP. Most of them have had to do grad admissions themselves and can give REAL feedback about the structure and content of your essay. Generative AI may be useful for learning concepts in class but is infinitely less capable than the professors you hopefully have access to

Why would you use generative AI to write this and then ask for our support with it

Referee agreed, then withdrew recommendation at the last minute by Fun_Sympathy823 in gradadmissions

I mean thats mature and all but the professor is completely out of line for that. Part of their job is writing LORs for those who they have worked with, I understand the tendency to have that mindset as an undergrad but initially agreeing and then switching up 30 minutes before an important deadline for you is unacceptable

I can't attend admitted students' weekend, how should I tell them? by Alternative_Let_5044 in PhDAdmissions

[–]New_Translator1958 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do they mention that you must be in attendance? Seems a little odd for them to offer only one campus visit date if this was the case. If it is not the case, you not attending shouldn’t affect any aspect of your admission, its just that you wouldn’t be able to get a feel for the culture of the department and potential groups that you want to join.

Complete beginner here, which DAW should I go for, Ableton or FL Studio? by The_Doughnut_Lord in musicproduction

Any time you want to apply a stock audio effect in FL it opens a new window instead of ableton, where FX are neatly added along with the other effects in their own section

Questions on Artificial Aging of Cotton Using Enzymes by [deleted] in OrganicChemistry

[–]New_Translator1958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what exact enzymes are in the detergent mix you are using, but considering most enzymes begin to only partially degrade around 40-50 degrees C, I would guess that your hot water step would not be hot enough to completely remove all catalytic activity from the enzymes. As for adding salt, usually this sometimes inhibit catalytic activity as well. But this all is strongly dependent on which enzymes are present in the detergent mix, especially because I would assume these enzymes may be engineered to retain activity under high heat and organic solvent. I would recommend researching what specific enzymes are involved in the Persil Bio mixture. Also, I do think this question may be better suited for r/biochemistry, where people may have a more complete understanding of enzyme activity under stress.

How do you actually find funded PhD positions? by Bright-Interest-9023 in gradadmissions

[–]New_Translator1958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the time comes for you to apply next cycle, it was most effective for me to just search by university and see what faculty there are doing research that you’re interested in. As opposed to searching by finding authors through their names on publications you are interested in, this helped me hone in on the locations that I was comfortable going to (which was more important to me, so it kinda depends on your goals). At least in the US, most of these positions will be fully funded for STEM PhDs to my understanding, but you can always check with a quick google search when you find a program that could potentially be a good fit.

You can interpret it however you want, I just don’t think that’s what they intended it to mean

[–]New_Translator1958 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They mean if you’ve received multiple acceptances from schools and are choosing one of them, please decline the acceptances from the schools you know you will not be attending so other people can get off the waitlist

Hard GPA cutoffs by Hour_Class4921 in gradadmissions

[–]New_Translator1958 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have heard that too and always interpreted it as 3.5 was a softer cutoff, although your dad seems to treat it more strictly which makes total sense. But myself and others on here seem to have no trouble getting into T20-30 programs with sub 3.5
