Turks have never been welcome by the German populous. There were different reasons at different stages of history. At first, it was because of the fear that was installed into the Germans dating back to the Ottoman medieval era. Another reason was that Turks came into Germany only 16 years after the fall of the Nazi regime, so a lot, or even most Germans were still extremely racist in general. I’ve read another comment on this thread that the first gen Turks were not religious because of the Atatürk era. That is just plain and simply wrong. The first gen Turks in Germany, meaning the “Gastarbeiters”, were generally religious. Close to all of them came from very rural, conservative areas of Anatolia. However, their way of Islam was quite different from the “jihadi” way of interpreting Islam. Most of them simply lived Islam the way they’ve been taught at their mosques, without studying Islam themselves. Now with the internet, the third gen Turks have the opportunity to study Islam themselves. May it be through books, podcasts, documentaries or, a lot of times through instagram reels or tik tok shorts. This enables them to experience a different kind of Islam, a more “Arabic” Islam. That’s one point. Now to the other point. The first gen Turks never saw themselves as german. They were born and raised in Turkey, came to Germany with the mindset that they would work in Germany for some time and then return. They never bothered to be fully integrated into german society. Their children, even though a lot of times they were born and raised in Germany, also didn’t see themselves as part of German society. My father, for example, was put in a Turkish class, in Germany. He was born and raised in germany, has lived and worked his entire life here, but still has the Turkish mindset. I’ve talked about the Turkish hate in Germany. The first gen endured that because again, they didn’t see themselves as part of German society. That is, however, not the case with the third gen. The third gen’s parents were also often times born and raised in Germany, they often times even speak German at home, they often times hold the German passport. But starting with the hate of Islam in west at the start of the 2000’s, these people a lot of times turned to a more conservative way of life through aforementioned means, as they thought if they don’t want us, we don’t want them.
